Chapter 306: An unwelcome guest.

Zevran.

My heart was racing like a motherfucking wild bird in my chest, and that is because for the past two hours or more, I have been pretending to be asleep while I waited for the familiar sound of heels hitting the floor just as Kael had described.

After the whole debacle of who Leilani would mate with had settled, Darius had as promised tried to rupture— is rupture the word?— the spell, and it had worked...

Goddess even for a minute, I had begun to think that he had the power to lift it but had simply decided not to because of the so-called trap!

—And now... now, we were stuck at waiting.

Kael was pretending not to be fully recovered from his previous encounter with the girl and Caelum... well, Caelum was pretending to be old Caelum— simply detached and unfazed. But I could hear his heart beating in his chest even from a mile away.

His breath was hot enough to warm us all in the harshest of winters and his hands trembled so much, I would’ve given him a guitar if it wasn’t for how dire the situation was.

Two hours passed and then four.

Medical practitioners came and left.

And just when I had begun to give up hope, just when I was already thinking about breaking character and looking for other means to save Leilani, I heard the infamous click-clacking of heels coming towards us; and by the gods, my heart picked up speed almost immediately.

A weird chill ran up my spine but it was nothing compared to the one that Darius had put us through earlier.

And as I thought these things, a strange overly sweet smell with an undertone of something disgusting filled my nostrils. I glanced up instantly, breaking character and almost lost my cool when I was met a soft smile from evil personified.

"Oh, it is the other Alpha!" An eerily high pitched voice shrilled at me as a pair of overly gleaming blue eyes raked from my head to my toes.

She was a petite woman alright, dressed in a flattering scrub with a stethoscope draped around her neck. Her curly hair was styled into a high messy bun that was so tight, it made the corners of her eyes appear beautifully slant.

Her lips painted a bloody shade of red lifted slightly when she caught me watching, then turning to cast a look at Kael, she continued; "I see that this one hasn’t quite recovered yet. What a shame!"

Cocky bastard! Just like Darius had guessed.

She turned back to me. "I am not here to hurt you..."

"I don’t even know who you are!" I answered, forcing myself to sound as soft as it is possible. At the sound of my voice, Caelum lifted his head from his phone slowly. His eyes darted from the girl’s face to mine and then he shrugged;

"I thought that the nurses have come to check on Leilani about an hour ago..." he drawled, sounding as though he hasn’t been paying any attention to our conversation.

The lady shot me a look then turned to Caelum who had pretended to return his attention to his phone and softly said; "Oh, but I am here to check her vitals one more time since she seems to have been responding to treatment very nicely lately,"

Exactly that...

Her words made me cock my eyebrows and I pretended to lower my gaze just as she stepped further into the room. I quickly scanned her face for any sign of anything, be it fear, regret or something... but there was nothing.

She was simply enjoying this a little too much.

"You mentioned not being here to hurt me..." I drawled as she made her way over to Lani’s bed, "...care to tell me what you mean by that?"

I made sure to whisper this question in order to make her lower her guard or perhaps think me more stupid than she already does.

She smiled and waved. "Oh no, I thought you meant I was here to hurt her. You know, with syringes and stuff like that. Never mind me!"

Her smile... and the way the lie rolled off her tongue so easily filled me with disgust. And when she leaned close to Leilani, lacing her fingers into her hair and feigned professionalism by placing the stethoscope on her chest, I nearly lost it.

A beat of silence passed before she plucked the ear tips out to her ears and stepped back. "It was false alarm," she whispered under her breath. "She doesn’t look too good."

Then right in front of me, she brought out a syringe from her pocket containing a clear liquid.

However, she was just about to inject it into her when I rushed to stand up before I even could control myself, my frown deepening as I hissed; "What the fuck is that?" 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮

"What the fuck is what?" She hissed back, sounding annoyed, "this?" She snapped, raising the syringe ever so lightly that its needle caught in the light.

I nodded once. "Yes,"

"Well, Alpha, whatever it is is for me to know and for you to wonder." She snapped, rolling her eyes as she turned away from me.

She had however just made a move towards Leilani and was about to stab the needle into her when suddenly—

She stopped moving.

The syringe dropped from her hand, clattering to the floor and her eyes glazed up just as a small gasp slipped past her lips.

I looked up just in time to see a familiar figure standing by the door. It was Darius but behind him were Gavin and Maya, their eyes round with panic.

He was muttering something inaudible under his breath and making some kind of strange symbols with his fingers.

When our eyes met, he smirked at me, but before I could shoot him a glare, the lady screamed, falling to the flloor in one loud thump.

She convulsed violently, crying and thrashing, but whatever Darius was doing to her, he didn’t stop. Instead, he continued until she began to curl into herself, hugging her knees to her chest as more tears streamed down her face.

"Are you going to kill her?!" Caelum asked in panic, referring to the strange psychotic woman writhing in agony. But Darius like himself didn’t answer right away.

Instead he shrugged; "Maybe... but I need to know why she’s doing this to Lani first. And afterwards, we can all collectively send her back to whatever hell hole she’s crawled out from."

Chalice.

The end just like my witch friends says, is here.

Gosh, she doesn’t even need to tell me for me to know that as I can already feel it in my bones. I could already tell from how overly agile I have been these past few days and from high spirited I and my wolf were.

I pulled my surprisingly healthy hair back as I rose to my feet, ignoring the usual trickling sound of water that leaked from an unknown spot in the ceiling.

But for some reason today, it sounded like it wasn’t just leaking from the ceiling, it sounded like it was leaking from someplace else... somewhere that I feared to mention.

My large stomach also hurt in a way that I found too painful, and hell, I wanted to believe that it was my miscarriage on its way until I felt a kick— sharp and cruel at my mid back.

The force sent me toppling forward but before I could fall, I gripped at the wall, wincing when the pain grew unbearably worse.

"Goddess, what the fuck?" I hissed under my breath just as another round of pain tore through my lower back, sending tears spilling from my eyes before I could stop them.

I lowered my head and screamed, half-expecting to see blood; But Hades, it wasn’t blood that I saw. It was water.

My water.

My water just broke!
