Chapter 315: Drunken princess.

Leilani

My first thought was to ask her how she came to know that. I wanted to know why Malakai of all people would want to do that to his dearest Chalice, the girl who was the same reason he had taken his life in the first place; But before I could even think of asking, I felt someone loop their arm in mine.

I blinked, cleared my throat and whispered; "Gavin?"

He nodded softly. "Lani."

"Where are you taking me?"

"We need to see Father’s lawyer briefly before our mother is returned to her cell." He answered quietly, his voice so soft, it literally brushed against my skin like a caress.

And with that, he continued to drag me the rest of the way until we arrived at a small shed, covered only with large palm fronds to block out the sunlight. The chairs were creaky wooden objects that protested whenever anyone sat down on them. But I didn’t.

I couldn’t.

My heart was racing in my chest. It was pounding so hard, I feared it would make me develop some kind of chest ache.

Cold sweat had also broken out on my skin, and as I watched mother exchange half-felt pleasantries with the familiar looking man, I couldn’t help but wonder what I was doing here.

And why Malakai would do this to me...

He had hated me... tortured me. He had made it his life’s duty to remind me of my never changing place— which was under his shoe. So why the hell would he leave barely anything to his special daughter and remember to give something to me, the bastard and punching bag?

Why does it feel like he likes to set me up for problems like this?

"...his company, his estate and his properties at Bora Bora." The words snapped me out of my reverie and I looked up just then to find Gavin watching me, his face a mixture of satisfaction and confusion.

He flashed me a small smile when he found me watching him, but before I could ask him what was wrong, the lawyer’s voice cut through my thoughts, interrupting me. He said;

"And to his daughter, Ms Leilani Sinclair, he leaves his mansion, the family’s trust fund. His vault full of diamonds and the three estates at Atlanta. He calls these his parting gift and peace offering to you. And he hopes that you find a spot in your heart to forgive him for all his wrongdoings."

For a couple of minutes, I simply stood there, shocked to my bones and shaking so visibly, one would think I had just had an epileptic attack.

My ears buzzed with sounds I couldn’t decipher and the corners of my eyes blurred so much, I could hardly make sense of what I was seeing anymore. I staggered but managed to hold myself upright, waiting to hear what the lawyer had to say about Chalice.

"And for his daughter, Chalice Blackthorne, she should be trained and lectured on the importance of hard work. And only until she understands this should she be given the company at Johannesburg. It is a flourishing business and he hopes to see her push it to greater heights in his afterlife."

He’d left her with a struggle.

Not a promising company, but a struggle.

The company was good. It brought in good returns annually; But it was nothing close to what the Chalice I knew always wanted for herself. It was something that would’ve made her riot if she were alive.

The cry that slipped out of my mouth when these words played and replayed itself in my head were involuntary and raw. It made everyone turn to look at me, their eyes holding sorrow, pity and something akin to admiration.

But right now, I didn’t want to be admired.

I didn’t want to be stared at like I was some freaking kind of angel.

I didn’t want to be hurt time and time again, only to be placated with some millions of dollars thrown at my feet like that could make up for all of what I had been put through.

I stumbled away from them, holding my hands to my lips to stop myself from crying out loud, and as I marched through the searing sunlight to wherever it was that my legs were taking me, I cursed at Malakai.

I cursed my mother too.

And I cursed myself, and then the moon goddess for making me so weak. So pathetic... so empathetic.

—And so unable to fill this gaping hole in my chest.

It was almost midnight when my phone suddenly began to ring. The sound had been loud and sharp, snapping me out of my sleep induced haze.

My brothers and I, before sleeping off on the couches in the living room, had helped ourselves to a few bottles of wine, especially since after everything that has happened these past few days.

So before now, we were passed out in the living room, nursing bottles that were long empty.

—That is, until my phone began to ring incessantly like the devil himself wanted to speak to us one on one.

But my drunkenness was not enough to dull the urgency in each ring. It didn’t stop me from realizing that whenever I did not pick up, Zevran’s phone would ring next, then Caleum’s... then mine, over and over again until the never-ending noise pulled me out of my dreams.

I rubbed my swollen eyes with the back of my hands and grumbled in annoyance as I picked the phone up, cursing under my breath until I froze.

Because—

"Leilani?"

At the mention of her name, my sleeping brothers stirred awake. Their eyes, sharp and wide, found mine in the dim lights. Caelum was the first to sit up. He frowned at me and asked;

"What happened to Leilani?"

"She’s been calling us for several minutes now. I am trying to call her back but she isn’t picking up. I wonder what may be wrong with her." I rushed out, dialing her number again, and groaning when it went straight to voicemail.

Zevran and Caelum rushed to pick up their phones too and their cries of dismay rang out in unison when they realized how many times she’d called them.

"She didn’t pick either when I tried to call!" Caelum hissed under his breath; But before I could respond to that—

"Hello?!" Her loud voice echoed through Zevran’s phone. "Hello, hello, my prince! I believe I can fucking fly!" She squealed, and I froze.

The sleep dragging me in instantly wiped off my face and I know the same happened to my brothers because they immediately rushed to their feet.

Zevran hissed; "She’s drunk. Leilani is drunk!"
