Chapter 2025 - I Came All This Way. Why Leave?

Ye Chunqiu had chosen to submit. Thus, he was now one of that “Grandmother’s” subordinates.

Furthermore, his ability to slay that Ghost God and avenge Xiao Ruyi and Xu Fushi proved two things.

First, after submitting to “Grandmother,” his strength underwent a shocking transformation. Otherwise, he could never have killed that Ghost God.

Second, Grandmother valued him highly!

After all, he’d killed a Ghost God of the City of the Lost. They were undoubtedly one of Grandmother’s subordinates too, but Ye Chunqiu killed him anyway, and he wasn’t punished for it in any way. It was obvious how much importance Grandmother attached to him.

Su Yi dared say with certainty that, had Grandmother wanted to stop Ye Chunqiu from getting revenge, she could have done so easily, but she’d done no such thing. That had to mean that Ye Chunqiu was worth far more to her than the slain Ghost God.

This was what made Su Yi so rueful.

“Do you blame me, Ol’ Wang?” Ye Chunqiu said with a bitter laugh.

Su Yi shook his head. “I don’t. Given your pride, if not to avenge Xiao Ruyi and Xu Fushi, you would have died before choosing to submit and live on in degradation.”

Ye Chunqiu took a sip of wine and smiled. “You understand me better than anyone. I wouldn’t speak of these things with anyone else, either.”

This was what it meant for friends to bare their hearts to each other. They understood each other, so there was no need for explanations. Their intentions were clear.

Still, Su Yi dared not say with certainty that Ye Chunqiu hadn’t changed after countless years in the City of the Lost. He said directly, “Did you come here to repay Grandmother’s kindness and urge me to submit, or just to reminisce?”

Ye Chunqiu laughed, but his smile was tinged with sadness. He whispered, “Ol’ Wang, you really have changed.”

He rose from the stone steps and sighed. “Back then, you would never have wasted your breath asking such a question.”

Su Yi froze, stunned, then sank into silence.

Strictly speaking, he’d lived numerous lives. Wang Ye was just one of them. From that perspective, he really was different from the Wang Ye whom Ye Chunqiu remembered.

Still, because he had access to all of Wang Ye’s memories, Su Yi instantly realized that his words had stung Ye Chunqiu.

Should he apologize? No, that would be too distant, and it wasn’t Wang Ye’s style. Instead, Su Yi rose from his wicker chair, took out a jug of wine, and tossed it to Ye Chunqiu. “What do you plan to do?”

Ye Chunqiu threw back his head, drained the jug, and cursed. “Fuck! You’re seriously still asking? Are you trying to anger me to death?”

Bang!

He flung the jug to the ground, then burped contentedly. “I’ve known right from the start who was really behind Xiao Ruyi and Xu Fushi’s deaths, but over the years, I’ve buried that grudge in the deepest recesses of my heart. I’ve been waiting all this time for the day I could sever this enmity once and for all.”

He turned, then smiled bitterly at Su Yi. “I’ve been building my strength, but it’s nowhere near enough yet. I wouldn’t have guessed that you’d come looking for me at a time like this. Still, now that you’re here, of course we have to turn the tables!”

His voice was full of determination.

Su Yi smiled. The true culprit was, of course, Grandmother! The Ghost God who’d killed Xiao Ruyi and Xu Fushi was merely her subordinate. He'd been acting on her orders.

There was no doubt about it. Ye Chunqiu had chosen to submit, but he’d been enduring all this time, biding his time and gathering power in secret as he waited for his opportunity to destroy Grandmother once and for all.

Now, his old friend had fought his way into the City of the Lost. Ye Chunqiu had no choice but to reveal his plans prematurely, even if it meant turning the situation on its head!

Ye Chunqiu hasn’t changed! Su Yi’s last misgivings vanished. Now, he was even a bit ashamed. His questions had been too much; he really had hurt and insulted Ye Chunqiu.

Suddenly, an icy female voice rang out. “I knew it! I just knew that no matter how well I treated you, you would never truly be willing to serve me.”

Heart-palpitating pressure descended on the Fog-Shrouded Street once more.

Ye Chunqiu sighed. “You sent me to persuade Ol’ Wang to test my loyalty, right? Are you pleased with the results?”

“Do you understand what betraying me will cost you?” That icy female voice rang out once more.

“My life,” Ye Chunqiu said with a laugh. “But death is nothing to fear!”

“No, a life worse than death is the best punishment for a traitor,” the woman said with cold indifference. “I can grant you life and make you a god, but I can also leave you longing to die yet unable to do so!”

Ye Chunqiu pointed to Su Yi. “Were I truly trapped in a life worse than death, Ol’ Wang would be the first in line to grant me a quick death and let me die with dignity!”

Su Yi shook his head. “With me here, no one can kill you.”

The woman laughed. “Then I’ll just have to wash my eyes and wait. I'm curious to see how long you can keep jumping around.”

As that bone-chilling, icy voice disappeared, and the handsome scholar walked over.

“Brother Ye, why was this necessary?” The handsome scholar gently shook his fan. He seemed to find this an awful pity.

“I might have become a Ghost God, but my pride has not broken. What about you? You’ve been trapped in the City of the Lost for a long, long time. Are you truly willing to remain stuck here forever?”

Ye Chinqiu waved his sleeve, and a sword appeared in his grip. When he faced the handsome scholar, his brow knit with uncharacteristic solemnity.

“The River of Epochs’ power is gradually ebbing. According to Grandmother’s estimates, it won’t be long before the Curse of the Ancient Gods can no longer confine us to the City of the Lost. When that day comes, where won’t I be able to go?” said the handsome scholar. “If I stay by Grandmother’s side, breaking out of the City of the Lost won’t be difficult. So it’s truly a pity that you’ve chosen to betray us, Brother Ye.”

He shook his head, and indeed, he sounded utterly disappointed.

“I never truly took her for my master, so why speak of betrayal?” said Ye Chunqiu. “Enough. No more talk. Just attack already!”

He shook his sword, his aura suddenly grand and forceful, like an unparalleled god of the sword. His murderous intent shook heaven and earth.

“Ol’ Wang, take your companions and leave. Go back the way you came!” Ye Chunqiu’s eyes flashed like lightning. “I’ll hold up the rear!”

Su Yi said, “I came all of this way. Why leave?”

Ye Chunqiu was stunned.

Su Yi, meanwhile, walked over and patted him on the shoulder. “It won’t be too late to leave after we’ve killed Grandmother. You can look after my companions for now.”

The handsome scholar laughed. “You’ve got balls!”

Ye Chunqiu, however, was exasperated. “Why fight to be the one to go to your death? Or do you plan to die with me?”

It sounded like he was complaining, but it was obvious he had little hope of survival. He was completely prepared to go to his death!

Su Yi said irritably, “When have I ever bragged about something as trivial as killing a few measly ghosts?”

He seized Ye Chunqiu by the shoulder and tossed him over to Wu Lingchong and Li Shuang. “If it looks like I can’t hold out, you’re welcome to join in. Until then, just sit tight and watch.”

The corners of Ye Chunqiu’s lips twitched. Hah! He really is as prideful as ever! Very well. Let’s see how he handles this!

The handsome scholar watched coldly, neither prideful nor impatient.

The sight of Su Yi and Ye Chunqiu arguing over who got to throw their lives away first entertained him. He couldn’t help but chuckle. “Brother Ye, you needn’t be in such a rush. Once I’ve sent this ‘Ol’ Wang’ off, I’ll personally suppress you and bring you to Grandmother for punishment.”

With that, he waved his feather fan.

Whoosh!

The fog churned, and the lanterns hanging from the sides of the streets swayed violently.

Then, one figure after another emerged from the lanterns and shot into the air.

There were one hundred and thirty-three of them in total, and thirteen of them were Ghost Gods!

Every last one of them had a bloodthirsty, baleful aura. Their ferocious majesty made heaven and earth dim, and the very air itself shook as a wave of terrifying murderous intent swept outward.

“Throughout the ages, no one, not even gods, has made it through the Fog-Shrouded Street. See that? Those are one hundred and thirty-three of the Lost. Although they’ve been stripped of their memories and lost all sense of self, they’re no weaker than they were in life.

“'Ol’ Wang,' if you can get through them, I’ll really think more highly of you!” The handsome scholar burst into laughter, turned, and vanished.

Boom!!

One hundred and thirty-three terrifying members of the Lost attacked in unison, all of their wrath focused on Su Yi.

The thirteen Ghost Gods led the attack. One manipulated a blood-red, serpentine dragon. Another shone with endless Dao Light. One held a mountain aloft, and another sent endless sword light flying through the air.

When their terrifying powers gathered, they shook heaven and earth. The entire Fog-Shrouded Street was blanketed in terrifying destructive power, like the descent of the apocalypse.

Wu Lingchong and Li Shuang almost felt suffocated.

Ye Chunqiu waved his sleeve and manifested a searingly bright, blood-red curtain in front of them. At the same time, he called out, “Don’t be afraid! Worst case scenario, we die, and even if Ol’ Wang can’t handle this on his own, I’m still here!”

Boom!

Off in the distance, heaven and earth were thrown into upheaval.

It was then that Su Yi attacked. A world of reincarnation appeared reflected around his tall, upright figure. It was seemingly endless, like an abyss or the pits of hell.

The Sword of Proximity clanged, its hums booming throughout the sky as Su Yi charged, swung his sword, and attacked.

The sky seemed to explode beneath his sword as an endless, turbid, Sea of Purgatory swept outward.

Reincarnation Sword Intent——Adrift in the Sea of Bitterness!

The thirteen Ghost Gods’ joint attack was instantly blocked, washed away by the terrifying waves. The Sea of Bitterness’s power was like a giant hand, “grabbing” the Ghost Gods and dragging them into eternal oblivion!

Kaboom!

A heaven-shaking impact rang out, and the thirteen Ghost Gods fought back with all their might.

But the other hundred-plus members of the Lost were swept into the Sea of Bitterness, like duckweed swept into a vast ocean.

In the blink of an eye, dozens of the Lost were enveloped completely. All of them were visibly overcome with terror, helplessness, and despair.

Then, within moments, they burst into a puff of green smoke and vanished completely into the Sea of Bitterness!

Boom!

The Sea of Bitterness swept through the sky. Anyone who gazed upon it would have felt paltry and insignificant. Its power of reincarnation was incomparably taboo, and it specifically countered the undead. It presented a lethal threat to the Lost.

Ye Chunqiu watched from a safe distance. Despite himself, his eyebrows rose in surprise. Ol’ Wang is obviously far, far stronger than before he reincarnated!
