Blaze sat before his mother's doctor, head bowed and shoulders slumped in defeat.

The events of the last three hours had left him feeling tragic, his world now shrouded in complete darkness. His face was a mask of gloom, his eyes reflecting the brokenness within and his spirit crushed under the weight of the doctor's words.

His phone was ringing every now and then but he didn't bother taking any of his call. He was too demoralised to speak to anyone when his mother was lying lifeless in the intensive care unit, strapped to a live support machine.

"But h...how..." Blaze said in a trembling voice, fighting the urge to shed tears at his mother's volatile state.

"H...how could it have happened?" He looked up at the doctor, his eyes reddened and twitching. "She was looking healthy yesterday night. She ate very well and we all had a great time as a family. How could everything change in less than twenty-four hours? How could she have low blood sugar without any symptoms? Tell me, how?"

Doctor Steven released a sigh as he slowly took off his reading glasses and dropped them on his desk while keeping his gaze fixed on Blaze. He was also having a hard time coming to terms with his friend's condition. Watching her resilient and undefeatable son crumble slowly before him, felt like a dagger in his stomach.

"Hypoglycemia unawareness as the name implies takes most diabetic patients unaware. There are no warning signs to show that your blood sugar has dropped. Surprisingly, you find yourself craving more food which is one of its symptoms, amongst others. If she had been brought to the hospital before she lost consciousness, we may have been able to prevent her from falling into her diabetic coma. Nevertheless, we are doing our best to make sure she recovers from that coma."

"This is all my fault," Blaze said between gritted teeth, his heart heavy with grief. "She tried calling me but I never took her calls because of my stupidity. It's all on me and I will never forgive myself if anything happens to her."

"Nothing will happen to her." Doctor Steven countered Blaze's negative confession.

"I hope so doctor. I really hope so because I can't afford to lose her. She's all I have left in this world. You have to help me. You have to promise me that she would come out of this alive and well?"

Dr Steven sighed. He couldn't give such assurance because he wasn't God neither did he have any mystical healing power.

Putting aside his professional ethics of the doctor-patient relationship, doctor Steven stood up and walked over to where Blaze was seated. He placed his hand on Blaze's shoulder and spoke in a fatherly tone.

"Blaze, I know this is hard to take in, but you need to put yourself together. You need to be strong for your mother. You won't lose her as long as you stay hopeful. Right now all she needs is our prayer, care and love. Your mom has always been a fighter. I'm positive she will come out of this alive and stronger. Okay."

Blaze nodded, lowering his head and burying his face between his palms.

Releasing another sigh, the doctor said. "You can stay here for a while and gather yourself together while I go check and other patients."

Blaze nodded again, without lifting his head.

Releasing another sigh and shaking his head, doctor Steven quietly left his office, giving Blaze some space to ease his heavy conscience.

The office fell silent as Blaze remained in the same gloomy posture until his phone started ringing again.

Lifting up his head, Blaze slowly reached out for his phone to check who the caller was. When he discovered that it was Eugene calling, he received the call.

"Hey bro, how is mom?" Eugene's voice was low as if he was talking in a call-restricted area.

"She's in a critical state," Blaze said, gnashing his teeth as a single tear fell from his reddened eyes.

"What! Is it that bad?"

"Let's not talk about it now. How is Amelia?" Blaze asked, stifling any more tears from falling.

"She is fine. It didn't take long for her to regain consciousness when we arrived at the hospital. But the doctor said we should avoid exciting her any longer because of..." Eugene paused as if he was contemplating completing his statement.

"Her pregnancy?" Blaze asked, gritting his teeth further until his jaw started aching.

"You know about it?" Eugene asked in a slightly alarmed voice.

"Is her father there with her?" Blaze asked without answering Eugene's question.

"Yes."

"Did she say anything to him?"

"Yes, they spoke briefly after she was given some medication to help her sleep."

"What did they talk about?"

"I have no idea, big bro. Sister-in-law asked me to wait outside, saying she needed to talk to her father alone."

Blaze clenched his fist until his knuckles turned white.

"Send me the address of your current location," Blaze said before hanging up.

Before Amelia succumbed to the drowsiness of the medication she was given, she succeeded in alleviating her father's fears of infidelity in her marriage. She told her father in confidentiality, everything concerning her contract marriage to Blaze and the conditions governing their marriage. She told him confidently that Blaze was responsible for her pregnancy as he was the only man she had ever slept with. And she assured him of her plans to make things right with Blaze, seeing that she had fallen in love with him.

Seated beside his sleeping daughter with her head lowered and heart heavy, Senator Gregory remained gloomy after learning the bitter truth surrounding his daughter's marriage to a man who detested him.

He couldn't believe that Amelia sacrificed her happiness and her body all for the sake of exposing his brother's treachery towards her. He felt guilty for not seeing his brothers and wife for their greedy dark side.

And now, because of his negligence as a father, his daughter's life could be ruined if Blaze decided that he didn't want a family with her.

Just then a knock on the door snapped the senator out of his excruciating thoughts. He tilted his head backwards, only to see Eugene peeking.

"Is she still asleep?" Eugene asked and the senator nodded.

"She has a visitor," Eugene said pushing the door wide open to reveal a young handsome man in Western attire with curly blonde hair and blue eyes staring back at him.
