Chapter 25: A marriage had been arranged for her...

For so many years, this was the only night I was able to sleep peacefully until the next day.

Before I succumbed to the power of sleep, my mind had been restless over what might be her reaction in the morning.

Would she be angry?

Would she press for divorce?

Or would she run away from me?

More ridiculous was Karl, who had practically become mute, unbothered about me or whatever thought was going through my mind.

Even when I had to call his attention to what our morning might turn into the next day, he simply growled, and that was all.

I was beginning to doubt if he was my wolf rather than hers... every single word he uttered was either praising her or scolding me for not handling her well.

I wanted to blame myself for my impatience last night, but on second thought, I sighed. Given a choice, I would have repeated the same action over and over.

In the early hours of the next day, I felt her soft hand grappling over me. I stirred briefly, and my eyes fluttered open, my gaze trailing down at her hand.

The soft ringing of her phone seemed to be the reason. I sighed, but the next moment, she was seated at the speed of light.

Her gaze narrowed at me, inquisitively daring and practically ready to devour me if I answered wrongly.

Her eyes, which seemed to have a blue amber color during the night, were as bright as the sky. It was as though the color had never been there.

"How did you enter my room?"

"Who are you?" she fired in one breath. I felt guilty because, just as I expected, she didn’t remember what had happened nor did she have a recall of our intimate moment.

I had no option but to state the fact. "Mate," I called out before I could stop myself. "We are married," I had said.

When she wasn’t ready to accept, I had to present the evidence of marriage. Her eyes widened with shock and anger.

I had to admit her brain circuits seemed to have been wired differently because one moment she was angry, the next she was anxious.

I had already come to terms with accepting whatever anger she had. Surprisingly, her phone rang, and after her sister’s taunting words, she decided to accept the fact.

I felt both relieved and worried and, at the same time, encouraged.

But then, her face had several emotions coursing through it, baring her thoughts. I felt hurt, but then, like a tiny swipe of ice, my fury dispersed, returning to calmness.

I marveled at it because usually it didn’t always end without a disaster, but I decided to wave it off. Then Karl’s voice cut through. "Adrian, did you feel that?"

"What was it?"

"Are you now free to talk?"

"After a long time in years, shouldn’t I rest and feel good?" he growled.

I was stumped. "Forget it."

"Adrian, I think she can combat your anger without lifting a hand, just her voice."

This left my brows furrowed for a moment, but then I let it slide to the back of my mind.

Watching her prepare to return to her father’s house, I felt uncomfortable and reluctant, but then she had some matters to settle—a decision of hers I had come to accept.

I had the driver send her over, but returning to my mansion at night after work, I felt loneliness crashing like a tidal wave.

The memory of her gasp and moans tore through my mind. The soft feel of her breast, the sweet taste of her lips, her soft breath, and her nails digging into my back set me on fire.

I could feel my member hard in pants as I stood in the large bedroom staring down at the bed. It felt as though she was present here.

I sighed; it had just been one night. I schooled myself to bear with it. She was definitely handling important matters.

I settled on the bed, the faint fragrance of her hair calming my body heat. But then, I wanted to hear her voice more than anything.

I called her after several times. It was picked up, a male voice flickering over.

"Who are you?" he asked.

Karl stirred angrily, but I offered no comment, as I needed to find out who it was that had her phone.

The next moment, the person’s voice became anxious as it came with threats. I didn’t know why, but I felt amused, so I chuckled softly and ended the call.

I mind-linked my assistant and Beta. "Look into the Nortons’ family and find out the situation going on with Luna," I instructed.

Maurice kept mute for a while, not responding.

"What’s the problem?" I asked. I could feel his hesitation.

"Alpha, you must keep your sanity if I tell you. Do you promise?"

"Maurice?" I growled, already feeling my temper course through my veins.

"Alpha, there was a raid on the pack," he said.

My brow furrowed, my fists clenched as they trembled. "When did this happen?"

"Casualties?"

"Yet to assess the level."

"Get them done, and I need the result the soonest," I said.

I cut off the link and strode toward the balcony. The moon was full, silver, and cold. I was restless; I was furious.

Attacks against my pack seemed to be on the increase lately. For the past one week, severe attacks had been recorded, and the casualties were on the high rise. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶

My thoughts spun quickly, seeking answers. My fists clenched tightly beside me, my heart tightened as the one memory I had always sought to bury began to surface again.

The attack that left me homeless and orphaned as a pup. My mother’s dying scream, my father’s helpless sigh...even after they made sure I was well hidden—but then I had witnessed it all.

The terrible truth that almost had us wiped out from our world. A plot of betrayal by people we called our own.

It was brutal, it was painful, it was a debt I had yet to collect. I was on the verge of losing my sanity. Over the years, my emotions had always been like a storm sweeping across the forest.

Wild. Terrible. Untamed and ferocious.

The next moment, my Beta’s voice came through the mind link. "Alpha, rest assured, your arrangement last time was efficient.

A few rogues had been captured."

I sighed with relief. "What about Luna?"

He sighed softly. "A marriage had been arranged for her."

*What?"

My thoughts snapped, my fury rumbled beneath, my fist clenched.

Karl growled, struggling to come to the surface, but I wouldn’t let him. I couldn’t show up in the Nortons’ home this way.

"Alpha, calm down. It isn’t as bad as you imagined," Maurice tried to explain, but I scoffed.

I was certain he didn’t understand what was on stage. If only she were a werewolf, she would have understood better, and this alone was my source of concern.

She was human, and her decision might change.

"Alpha, permit me to ask... Is she a human mate?"

He asked, and the slight tremor of fear in his voice wasn’t lost on me. I drew in a deep breath.

"Come to the study with every detail you have gathered so far," I instructed and shut him out.

I wasn’t surprised he’d ask such; besides, he wasn’t with me on the day I found her and certainly hasn’t met Stella for the first time.

I spun on my feet and made my way back to the bedroom. I freshened up, hoping to calm my mind, but it wasn’t working.

I walked back to the bed and lay down. The faint scent of her body still lingered on the bed. Breathing it in greedily, Karl relaxed, and my eyes felt heavy.

It was still surprising how her scent could be so calming, to send me to sleep when, in years past, I had always stayed awake.
