Chapter 246: Kai’s People

–Sophia–

Just as Livana predicted, Tyrona was obsessed with the idea of Damon being happy. She was equally obsessed with the thought of Livana still breathing—still alive. I nearly died today. Literally. But with my man beside me, I was safe and sound, wrapped in his arms like fate itself had signed a contract.

"Where are we off to again?" I asked him lazily, my fingers tracing idle patterns on his chest.

"Oh, we’re visiting my parents in Hawaii," he said, winking.

I tilted my head. Hawaii, sure—but the private jet part caught me off guard. A real one. Full-on billionaire vibes. Whatever. I wasn’t complaining. We were already engaged, and I loved him so much it physically hurt sometimes. Plus, I hadn’t seen Francis in a while. Yes, he’s my ex, but he’s also my friend. Kai mentioned he was working overseas and would be back soon.

"So... what’s going to happen to Tyrona?" I asked.

"Who knows," he chuckled—but I heard the darkness underneath it. That low, dangerous note. He was probably already dismantling Tyrona’s little empire piece by piece.

After hours of nothing but snuggling—post-fight, post-near-death, post-emotional chaos—we ended up making love. God. It was incredible. The kind that makes you want to sign marriage papers immediately afterward. I couldn’t wait to marry him.

Then my thoughts drifted to Deanne and Caine. Their wedding plans—or lack thereof—made me curious. Why not just elope somewhere scandalous and hot?

I opened my luggage, searching for something decent to wear when meeting his parents. I sighed just as Kai wrapped his arms around me from behind, kissing my bare shoulder.

"Kai," I giggled, grabbing a white dress from the hanger. "What about this?"

"Perfect."

I slipped on my robe and pulled out the cloth steamer, carefully straightening the dress.

"Babe, it’s just my parents. We’re not really—"

"Shut up!" I snapped. "If you told me earlier, I would’ve packed something even more appropriate."

He didn’t care. He was lying there sideways, completely naked except for a sheet draped low on his hips—like a Greek god that casually escaped from a museum painting.

I sighed. I wanted to climb back into bed immediately, but discipline first. I hung the dress properly, then crawled onto the bed and straddled him, slipping off my robe.

He knew exactly what to do.

I made sure he reached heaven.

There was a bit of turbulence during our lovemaking—but the flight itself was smooth. I got ready two hours before landing. My man? Fully dressed and still asleep. Typical. I leaned down and showered his face with kisses.

"Kai, baby," I giggled.

He opened his eyes, took my hand, and kissed it. "Let’s find our seats."

"I still feel lazy," he murmured, hugging me close as I snuggled into his chest.

"I wonder how they’ll react when they see me?"

"They’ll love you," he said softly, rubbing my back.

I’d met his parents once. They were kind. But I hated Kai, Caine, and Damon back in high school—especially Damon. We lived in the principal’s office. I glared at Kai constantly, but he always looked innocent and unbothered. Damon, though? I loathed him.

That hatred faded once I saw how deeply he loved Livana. Just like this man loves me. What made it worse—and funnier—was when Kai showed me photos of Damon and me glaring at each other while holding hands like we were trying to break bones. Fake smiles, gritted teeth.

He knows exactly how to piss me off. And he enjoys it.

When we landed, I prepared to hop out. Cars waited nearby—thankfully no red carpet nonsense. Kai carried my purse and walked ahead, then turned and offered his hand like a gentleman.

The wind was strong, but the sun was bright. I inhaled deeply, already craving the salty sea air.

A tall, tan man greeted us by the Hummer.

"Hello, Miss Sophia! I’m Roy—Kai’s cousin."

Roy’s voice was deep, edged with that smooth Hawaiian accent that could lull you into thinking he was just another laid-back island guy. But I knew better. From the way he stood—too balanced, too alert—his physique wasn’t built just for gym workouts. This man was an assassin. Calm. Precise. Deadly.

Definitely one of Damon’s Shadows.

"Hi. Pleasure to meet you."

After quick introductions, I slipped into the backseat while Kai took the shotgun. The drive was long, winding through the countryside. He told me about the island where Livana and Damon eloped—how he recently bought it and planned for the whole family to stay there. 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞

A villa with five master bedrooms. Apparently, he already reserved one for Livana and Damon because they... used it nonstop during their honeymoon.

I cringed. Shook the thought away.

We arrived at a humble compound. Kids were running around—laughing, screaming. Normal. Too normal. But I knew better.

Then I saw them—Kai’s parents.

"Sophia! Hello!" His mother greeted us first, warm and bubbly.

What I didn’t expect... was how they treated me.

Like I already belonged.

There was a feast—lechon, music, dancing, games. Comfortable living. No flashy luxury. Our room—Kai’s room—had a wide queen bed, big windows, and fresh air flowing freely from the screen to avoid mosquitos.

"No air-conditioning," he said casually.

"I’m fine with that," I grinned. "I can sleep naked with you."

He laughed and patted my head. "I can’t wait to marry you."

I tiptoed and kissed him. "I can’t wait to marry you too."

The entire day turned into an engagement celebration. They crowned me with a veil headband that said Bride. We drank. We danced. I barely remembered Kai carrying me back to the room.

Drunk. Dizzy. Happy.

He laid me down gently, removed the headband, and kissed my forehead.

"How about a bath?" he asked.

"Mmm," I nodded, raising my arms. "Undress me."

He chuckled, disappeared briefly, then returned and helped me out of my clothes. I watched him organize our laundry while I lay there, drunk and smiling.

He carried me to the bathroom—wide, luxurious.

"They installed a new jacuzzi," he said.

We soaked together, bodies intertwined, the ocean visible through the glass.

"So... about your commitment to Livana’s empire," he said, tying my hair up. "Can you take a year... maybe a year and a half break?"

"Why?" I traced his biceps slowly.

"Let’s start a family."

I tilted my head. "Like... pregnant, fat, and ugly?"

He laughed. "You’d still be beautiful."

"Pregnancy does weird things," I teased. "Hormones are monsters."

"But—"

I pressed a finger to his lips. "I’d love that."

I kissed him and stood, wrapping myself in a towel. I rummaged through my bag and pulled out a compact powder style—actually a phone. I typed quickly.

Me: Kai proposed again. This time—starting a family.

Big Boss (Livana): When?

Me: As soon as possible.

Big Boss: ...You’ll need a year and a half.

Me: Exactly!

Big Boss: You and Deanne can’t be pregnant at the same time.

Me: Got it. (I grinned)

Big Boss: Just tell me when you plan to fuck without a condom.

Me: Maybe later. Hahahaha

Big Boss: emoji facepalm You all can’t plan to get pregnant. Deanne is already pregnant. And Logan? That man looks like he already tricked Jane into it. Impregnated her.

"Oh, shit," I muttered.

After a long moment of thinking, I sighed. I can’t ruin the plan. Birth control pills, condoms—whatever it takes, we’ll manage.

Me: Okay! Next year it is. But seriously... why is that bastard planning to impregnate Jane?

Big Boss: How am I supposed to know how his mind works?

Me: Anyway, I understand you need someone in the field.

Big Boss: Don’t worry. I’ll protect you. We’ll be in the field.

I froze.

Livana? In the field?

I never expected her to actually take that role again. She stepped into the field a few times before she lost her sight—but after that? Never. She became command. Pure control. Perfect orchestration on every mission without ever needing to pull a trigger herself.

Me: Let’s talk when I get back. For now, I’ll use condoms and birth control pills.

Big Boss: Thank you! Perfect. Now let me go lecture Logan about family planning.

I laughed and typed back a laughing emoji, already imagining how that conversation would absolutely destroy him.

I slid the compact away, returned to the jacuzzi, straddled Kai, and kissed him slowly.

"So?" he asked, his hands settling on my waist.

"Next year," I said softly. "There’s still a crisis. Deanne and Caine are pregnant. I can’t be."

"So you’ll keep working?" He frowned slightly. "Aren’t you the one managing the empire?"

I shook my head, my fingers sliding up to his nape, grounding him.

"It’s not me."

"Hmm... then who?" he asked, genuinely curious.

"We can’t talk about work, Kai."

He sighed, resignation lacing his tone.

"Yes, I know. Even though our bosses were married... this is different." He buried his face against my neck, kissing the sensitive crook. "If only Livana were alive... none of this would be happening."

"If Livana were alive," I countered, pushing him back just enough to look at him, "those bastards would still be dragging Blackwell’s business through the mud. The Shadows would abandon their posts. Some of them might even end up beaten to death."

He went quiet, then nodded.

"You’re right. We almost lost ten men." He studied my face. "Are you sober now?"

"Very sober," I admitted. "Still a little dizzy—but sober."

"I’ll be careful," he said softly. "We’ll do things your way." He leaned in and kissed my forehead.

And in that moment, I felt ridiculously blessed—loved, protected, respected. A man who doesn’t cage me, doesn’t question my strength, and trusts my choices.

Yeah. I’m damn lucky.
