Chapter 134: Chapter 134: Cherishing My Own Best Friend

Clara Sterling was nestled on the sofa in her bedroom, chatting with Sophie Sheffield.

Sophie teased, "Clara, I’ve never seen my brother act so clingy. He’s really in love with you."

"Really?" Clara smiled shyly.

"Yeah, I’ve never seen him like this before."

"What was he like when he dated before?"

"When he dated before? Are you talking about with Thea Tate?"

"Yeah."

Silas Sheffield said he and Thea were just neighbors.

But Sophie said Thea was Silas’s first love.

Clara thought Silas only said they were neighbors so she wouldn’t overthink it.

Sophie pondered for a moment and said, "I remember they got together the summer we graduated from high school, right? I went abroad for school, so I don’t really know what my brother was like when he was dating."

"Okay."

Sophie asked, "By the way, Thea is now a deputy general manager at the branch, she hasn’t made things difficult for you, right?"

"No, weren’t you two close? Why are you worried she would give me a hard time?"

Sophie lightly flicked Clara on the back of her head.

"What are you talking about? Yeah, I’m close with her, but not as close as I am with you. You’re my best friend."

"Besides, you’re married to my brother now. If Thea still has ulterior motives for him, I think she joined The Veridian Branch to get close to him. I don’t like people who make advances like that, I misjudged her before."

"Clara, let me tell you, when I was in Crestwood, I often visited grandma at the old house and spoke good things about you. I realized grandma has an objection to you because of Thea."

"Grandma said Thea sent her photos of Julian Hawthorne’s proposal scene he set up for you, on May 20th."

Clara let out a cold laugh, "I was wondering how grandma suddenly knew about what Julian did, turns out it was her."

"Yeah, I didn’t realize before she was such a green tea b**ch. Now that I think back, when she was in high school, her friendliness towards me was definitely because of my brother."

"How so?"

"Back in high school, she always found excuses saying her driver had something on, so she could catch a ride with us and acted as if she was really close to me. She held my hand and talked nonstop. My brother let her ride with us because he thought we were good friends; I was used as a tool."

At this, Sophie let out a cold snort.

"Hmph, I used to think she was a caring elder sister. Turns out she only pretended to be close to me to get to my brother. When she first came back to Crestwood, she even asked me out for shopping."

"I was really happy back then because we were close, so I agreed. And guess what happened?"

Clara asked, "What happened?"

Sophie couldn’t help but roll her eyes.

"She kept asking about my brother, and she mentioned you. Anyway, every three sentences were about my brother. If it were before, I’d have told her, but it’s different now, my brother is married, and you’re my best friend, I didn’t want to humor her, so I kept postponing her invitations."

Speaking of which, Sophie patted her chest and reassured Clara.

"Rest assured, I’m always on your side. Not just against Thea, but even if it’s you arguing with my brother or grandma, I’m on your side."

Clara felt a warmth in her heart and her eyes filled with a smile, "That’s so good to know."

"Of course, I spoil my own best friend."

Clara curved her lips into a joyous smile, "Hearing you say that gives me peace of mind."

"By the way, how are things between you and Preston Pierce lately?" Clara asked.

Sophie’s cheeks flushed with a shy blush, and she smiled, pursing her lips.

"We’re together now."

Clara was momentarily surprised, "When did this happen?"

"Just a couple of days ago. I was having dinner with a client and happened to run into him at the restaurant. He misunderstood and thought I was on a date, so he confronted me that night for an explanation."

At this, Sophie blushed even deeper.

"You know, last time we both got drunk and had a one-night stand, and afterward, I just left him hanging, didn’t reply to his messages, didn’t take his calls. I admit it was a jerk move, but he rejected my confession so bluntly back then, I thought he didn’t care about me..."

"Then that day, I ran into him at the restaurant, he seemed fine at first, but at night he just lost it, came up and kissed me forcibly. I pushed him away and slapped him, then saw his eyes were red, and there were tear marks on his face. He’s such a proud person, and he cried for me, my heart ached at that moment."

"That night we had an honest talk. He expressed his feelings and asked if I would consider him, and I thought about it and accepted because I knew I still had feelings for him."

"Clara, do you think I’m all about romance?"

"Not at all." Clara hugged Sophie, "I know how much you love him. Being able to be with the one you love is definitely something to be happy about, I’ll bless you."

"I knew you’d understand me the best." Sophie hugged Clara back.

Just then, Sophie’s phone rang.

Clara saw that it was a WhatsApp video call from Preston Pierce, she said with a smile, "Speak of the devil. You guys chat, I should get back to sleep, otherwise, your brother might rush me."

Sophie smiled sweetly, "Okay, goodnight, Clara."

"Goodnight."

...

The next day, on the anniversary celebration.

Clara Sterling chose a light purple off-shoulder long gown.

The gown’s skirt had a layer of light purple tulle, adorned with countless dazzling little diamonds that sparkled brilliantly under the lights.

There were too many haute couture dresses to choose from, making Clara dizzy with options. Sophie helped her pick in the morning and they finally settled on the light purple one.

Clara was changing into the gown in the walk-in closet.

"Silas," she called out.

Silas Sheffield was sitting on the sofa outside the walk-in closet, waiting for her. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

Hearing Clara call him, Silas responded.

"Yes?"

"Come in and help me."

Silas pushed the door of the walk-in closet open and went in.

"The zipper is stuck," Clara said.

Silas walked to her back and glanced downward.

Clara had very beautiful hair, black and smooth, shimmering like black silk soaked in water.

His large, well-defined hands gently gathered all of Clara’s silky, black tresses to the front.

Clara’s neck and the curve of her shoulder blades were thus exposed, glowing white under the soft indoor lighting.

Silas’s eyes darkened, his Adam’s apple bobbed, "Your hair is caught in the zipper."

He lifted his hand and gently pulled out the few strands caught, then slowly zipped up the dress.

Throughout the process, Clara had her back to Silas and didn’t see the fleeting darkness in his deep eyes.

"All done," Silas’s voice was deep and husky.

As the words fell, he wrapped his arms around Clara from behind, leaning down to gently kiss her soft, fair neck.

His tall frame was clad in a black suit, exuding a cool, restrained allure, as his warm, delicate kisses lingered between her neck and shoulders.

The mirror in front of them reflected their entwined silhouettes.
