Chapter 137: 137. Taser

"Stop with that cringy shit. I said I’ll do it, so I’ll do it. You have the responsibility to wake me up and look after me; can you do that?"

Henry looked away before nodding with unwillingness. Still, I felt he was a bit happier now that he had received an important task.

Really like a dog.

"If you do a good job, I’ll praise you again, in a heterosexual way, not a gay one." Again I had to emphasize it. If I get visions like that from someone else as well, I won’t manage to have a normal conversation with another man again.

Henry looked up with seemingly more interest after hearing about this kind of boring reward. Had he...had he really become a dog?

Anyway.

"We need to look around for a stimulus. I thought that my grandma might have a taser in this mansion. Let’s go and ask her."

"Wouldn’t that be dangerous?"

"Don’t start again with the precious-thing; it’s embarrassing. And that’s better than my grandma covering herself in blood to wake me up."

I stood up slowly and saw Henry looking frosty again.

"Or you feigning death after you are finally cleaned up again." I changed what I wanted to say, feeling that that guy was sulking.

After hearing my words, Henry stood up with a lot more enthusiasm.

He had become really attached to me somehow, and I wouldn’t mind it that much as long as it stays in a brotherly way. DAMN IT, AGAIN!

Do I need to force him on a girl before I can muster up a normal thought without going in that direction?

After not finding my grandma in her room, we returned to the dining room, where she sat and drank something that looked like coffee; it also smelled that way. She seemed to have rummaged through the destroyed kitchen.

Nice that she had her priorities set straight, sitting all polished up inside an upside-down mansion and drinking some imported, handpicked coffee.

Glasses Guy and the green-eyed girl were there as well, talking with Anti-Guy at the end of the long table. Looking at the girl, she somehow seemed familiar all of a sudden, but I couldn’t put my finger on it.

"Grandma, do we have a taser?" I asked her without any jibes in an attempt to not pick up a fight.

"Do you need a taser to protect yourself? And it is I; do I have a taser." She just couldn’t stop it.

"Grandma, how about you take on the next shadow?" I asked her, taking a stool and sitting across from her.

"You let your grandmother fight against monsters on top of needing a taser to protect yourself? Are you even human?" She replied, and I shut my mouth for a moment as to not curse her in front of outsiders.

Henry chuckled behind me, and I hit him in the stomach, only for him to laugh more.

"Ah...youth." My grandmother said in an annoyed tone and took a sip from her drink.

"Do you not have a taser, or do you just not remember where it is, cause you know...your age...your real age."

"In the bodyguard’s room, there could be one." Albeit glaring at me, she even pointed out the direction of said room.

Only by me getting nasty did she help; as expected of a demon from hell.

Henry and I walked to the other dining room I had first entered through, which took some time. These parts of the mansion were not cleaned up so magically while I was asleep, so we had to walk over destroyed furniture and broken glass.

Luckily my grandmother had also provided shoes.

No idea if the others washed their old ones or if they luckily found shoes in their size.

"About the red-haired girl..." Henry started when we were near our destination.

"Yes?" I asked, stepping over something that could have been a one-seater, with very much of the filling pulled out.

"You said she was hysteric; did she seem changed beyond that?"

"She was stronger than before." I hadn’t arm-wrestled with her at any time to have a comparison, but her grip could hold me in place, and that was strong, I would say.

"Anything else?"

"Well, she is scared, like everyone is. What’s on your mind?" Never at any time did I think I’d ever ask Henry anything so simple.

"Henrietta. She seemed confused about her and her counterpart’s lives. I think taking in a counterpart’s memories could have side effects, negative ones."

"My grandma is just fine."

"But your grandma killed her counterpart herself, didn’t she? She did not establish a link, and then someone else did it."

"Well. True. But even if that’s the case, I doubt there is a way to make your sister normal. Though, people becoming crazy after establishing a link but not personally killing their counterpart would just be another fantastic little surprise to the load of shit everyone’s lives will become." We stopped in front of a relatively simple wooden door, and I needed to kick against it a few times until it opened.

"Kenny, I think she confuses her relationship with you." Henry leaned against the doorframe and tilted his head toward me, watching me like a hawk.

"So what? She hates me because my counterpart beat her counterpart, and I hate her because she is a crazy bitch and got me put into prison. She can confuse whatever the hell she wants to."

Henry looked satisfied before he scowled again. Very expressive since waking up, aren’t we?

"If you throw her at the military, then she will tell them about your ability. If they imprison her, they will imprison you as well."

"Oh right, I haven’t told you yet." I walked into the big room where the beds for the bodyguards were now turned over or lying around in pieces and rummaged through the stuff on the ’floor’. I found a gun, which was good—always good—but not what I was looking for.

"Told me what?" Henry finally asked when I didn’t continue to talk.

I looked back and grinned widely at him.

"There will not only be prison waiting for me inside our world. There will be a laboratory and some ’center’ that will have me locked up."

As long as I come out as a chief, I can live with it. As long as I’m going to be free again, I can take on everything and everyone. Want to experiment on me? Give me a few heads in return and the prospect of becoming a free man again, freed from charges that could not have been more untrue, and I’ll do it.

"She can tell them what she wants; I’m not gonna see the light of the day anytime soon anyway."

I could stay inside some parallel worlds, and I could flee when we return—in some way or another I would surely be able to, given my ability.

But that’s not what I want; I don’t want to just not be imprisoned. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

I also don’t want to run around hiding my eyes and be rumored to have killed someone innocent. I want my fucking name washed clear, and if I can sit inside some damn skyscrapper in the future and make out with a girl before being interrupted by some gay gaslight, then that means there is a way to accomplish exactly that.

"Found it." I really found a taser and raised it like a treasure.

The shadow can bring it on.
