[25/11/2020, 21:58 | UEFA Champions League Group Stage 2nd Leg | Leverkusen 5 vs 1 Shakhtar Donetsk]

[Post-Match | BayArena Press Conference Room]

Peter Bosz sat at the press conference table, looking satisfied but composed. The assembled journalists were eager, notebooks ready.

"Peter, an emphatic victory tonight. Are you pleased with the performance?"

"Very pleased," Bosz replied. "We controlled the match from start to finish. Created numerous chances, defended well when needed, and showed clinical finishing. This is the level we need to maintain in the Champions League."

"Rakim Rex and Florian Wirtz were exceptional again. How do you manage two such young talents playing together?" 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶

Bosz leaned forward slightly. "They make my job easy. Both are intelligent, hardworking, and humble. They understand their roles within the team structure. Tonight showed what they’re capable of when they find their rhythm together. But they’re still learning, still developing, so we create an environment for the two of them to thrive."

"With 7 points from four matches, qualification seems likely. Are you confident about progressing?"

"Football is unpredictable. But we are optimistic regarding our chances, and with two difficult matches remaining—Inter Milan and Real Madrid. We take nothing for granted. Tonight was excellent, but it’s already over. Tomorrow, we focus on Hertha Berlin."

Another journalist raised their hand. "There’s been continued speculation about interest in Rakim Rex from bigger clubs. How do you respond to that?"

Bosz’s expression turned slightly stern. "Rakim is under contract here. He’s happy here, playing regularly here with individual and club goals we both want to achieve."

"One final question—Patrick Schick now has six goals in all competitions this season. How important is his contribution?"

"Extremely important," Bosz said. "Patrick is a complete striker—intelligent movement, clinical finishing, good in the air. He’s been excellent for us. He came in with high expectations and has exceeded them. His overall play has been consistently high all season."

[29/11/2020 | Olympiastadion, Berlin | Bundesliga Matchweek 9]

[Hertha BSC vs Bayer 04 Leverkusen]

The journey to Berlin had been routine, a short flight, a team bus to the stadium, the usual pre-match rituals. But the Olympiastadion, even with its limited attendance, still carried an imposing presence. The vast bowl of concrete and steel, built for the 1936 Olympics, had witnessed countless historic moments.

Today, it would host another Chapter in Leverkusen’s pursuit of the Bundesliga title. Hertha Berlin, sitting mid-table with inconsistent form, were dangerous opponents at home. Under Bruno Labbadia, they played direct football—physical, aggressive, looking to exploit set-pieces and transitions.

Not the most technical side, but effective in their approach. Bosz named a slightly rotated lineup, managing the workload after the midweek Champions League exertions:

---

Formation - Bayer Leverkusen (4-2-3-1):

GK: Lukas Hradecky

RB: Mitchell Weiser

CB: Edmond Tapsoba

CB: Aleksandar Dragović

LB: Daley Sinkgraven

CDM: Charles Aránguiz

CDM: Julian Baumgartlinger

RW: Moussa Diaby

CAM: Florian Wirtz

LW: Rakim Rex

ST: Lucas Alario

**Substitutes:** Niklas Lomb, Sven Bender, Wendell, Kerem Demirbay, Leon Bailey, Nadiem Amiri, Demarai Gray, Paulinho, Patrick Schick

---

The opening twenty minutes were scrappy. Hertha pressed high, disrupting Leverkusen’s rhythm. Physical challenges flew in—Cunha clattered into Baumgartlinger, Tousart fouled Wirtz twice in quick succession. The referee allowed the game to flow, perhaps too much to the Germans’ annoyance.

[23’]

Leverkusen’s breakthrough came when Aránguiz collected the ball from deep, playing a simple pass to Wirtz, who had dropped into space. The German teenager turned away from Tousart’s challenge, driving forward into the attacking third. Hertha’s defensive shape was compact, but Wirtz spotted the movement.

Rakim had drifted inside from the left, creating space for Sinkgraven to overlap. The pass was cleverly disguised, weighted perfectly into Sinkgraven’s run. The Dutch fullback took one touch, then whipped in a low cross toward the near post.

Alario attacked it, his run taking him between Boyata and Stark. His flick with his head was instinctive, redirecting the ball past Schwolow’s dive into the bottom corner. "LUCAS ALARIO!" Rae’s voice carried satisfaction. "Leverkusen take the lead with a well-worked goal!"

Alario sprinted toward the corner flag, sliding on his knees as his teammates converged. The Argentine striker had been clinical when called upon this season, and today was no different.

[34’]

Hertha responded with increased pressure, winning a free-kick thirty yards out after Dragović fouled Cunha. Plattenhardt stood over it, measuring his options beyond the wall set by Hradecky. The Brazilian-born German struck it cleanly with his left foot, curling around the wall.

The ball dipped viciously, heading toward the top right corner. Hradecky was forced to react quickly, shuffling across his line as he launched himself into the air, fingertips extended, palming it over the bar with a spectacular save. "What a save from Hradecky!" Robson exclaimed. "Plattenhardt nearly found the equaliser with a brilliant free-kick!"

The resulting corner was cleared by Tapsoba, his powerful header sending it out of danger. But Hertha were growing into the match, their directness causing problems.

[41’]

Disaster struck for Leverkusen in the 41st minute. A long throw-in from the right—Hertha’s speciality—caused chaos in the box. Boyata attacked it, his flick-on finding Cunha in space. Dragović blocked the Brazilian’s shot, but the rebound fell kindly for Lukebakio.

The Belgian winger struck it first-time from twelve yards, his shot robust and low. Hradecky got a hand to it, but couldn’t keep it out. The net rippled, and the Olympiastadion erupted. "Dodi Lukebakio equalises!" Rae announced. "Hertha is level just before halftime!"

Lukebakio sprinted toward the home fans, arms outstretched, his celebration wild. Hertha’s bench erupted, Labbadia punching the air, stunning Leverkusen as their comfortable lead evaporated in an instant.

[46’]

The second half began with Leverkusen showing more urgency. Bosz’s halftime instructions were clear—control possession, don’t force things, wait for the right moment. Hertha sat deeper now, content to defend their equaliser and look for counters.

[58’]

Leverkusen’s pressure continued to mount as the second half unfolded. Wirtz dropped deep repeatedly, trying to find pockets of space between Hertha’s lines. Rakim drifted inside, combining with Diaby on the right, but Hertha’s organisation held firm—Boyata and Stark marshalling the defence with experience.

Bosz made his move in the 63rd minute. The board went up: Patrick Schick on for Lucas Alario, Leon Bailey for Moussa Diaby. Fresh legs, more directness.

[68’]

Schick received the ball with his back to the goal, thirty yards out. He held off Boyata’s challenge, laying it off to Baumgartlinger. The Austrian played it wide to Bailey, who had found space on the right wing.

Bailey’s pace was electric, driving at Plattenhardt. He cut inside sharply, drawing Tousart across, then slipped a pass through to Wirtz. The German youngster was in space, twenty yards out, picking his head up as he scanned the box.

Wirtz shaped to shoot, pulling the nearby defender closer, before playing a clever reverse pass into Schick’s run. The Czech striker had peeled off Stark’s shoulder, timing it perfectly. He struck it first-time with his left foot, the ball flying toward the bottom corner.

Schwolow dove desperately, fingertips extended—but he couldn’t reach it—the ball nestled into the side netting. "PATRICK SCHICK!" Robson roared. "Leverkusen retake the lead! What a substitute’s impact!"

Schick sprinted toward the away fans, arms spread wide, his celebration emphatic. Wirtz jumped on his back, Bailey and Rakim quickly joining. On the touchline, Bosz allowed himself a fist pump in celebration.

[Hertha BSC 1-2 Bayer Leverkusen — Patrick Schick 68’]

[75’]

Hertha had grown more desperate, throwing bodies forward, searching for another equaliser. Cunha received in space, driving at Dragović. His shot from twenty-five yards was powerful, but rising, sailing over the bar. Lukebakio had a chance moments later, his header from a corner going just wide.

[82’]

Leverkusen tried to kill the match in the early 80th as Bailey attacked from the right flank. He cut inside past Plattenhardt’s challenge, looked up, and fired a shot, but it was deflected, looping into the air. Schwolow, in between the sticks, didn’t have much trouble gathering it comfortably in the air.

He immediately launched a counter, launching the ball forward with a powerful throw. It didn’t lead to much, though, as the ball was deflected with a nifty interception by Charles Aránguiz.

The final minutes were tense. Hertha pressed frantically, Leverkusen defended desperately. Hradecky made one final save, tipping Cunha’s volley over the bar in the 88th minute. The resulting corner was cleared by Tapsoba.

The referee checked his watch. Three minutes of added time had already elapsed. Hertha launched one final long ball forward, but Dragović headed it clear with authority. The ball found Aránguiz, who held it in the corner, drawing fouls, running down the clock.
