[01/12/2020, 21:50 | UEFA Champions League Group Stage MD5 | BayArena, Leverkusen]
[Bayer 04 Leverkusen 1 vs 1 Inter Milan]
[46]
(Fweeet!)
The second half began with Leverkusen showing renewed intent. Bosz’s halftime instructions were clear—exploit Inter’s wing-backs when they pushed forward, play quicker in transition, and don’t allow Brozović time on the ball.
Inter started cautiously, their three-at-the-back system reorganising as they probed for openings. Hakimi received wide on the right, driving at Wendell again. The Brazilian fullback had learned from the first half, staying deeper, forcing Hakimi wide rather than allowing him to cut inside.
Hakimi’s cross was overhit, sailing beyond everyone and out for a goal kick. Hradecky collected calmly, immediately looking to launch a counter.
[53]
The tactical battle intensified in the early 50th when both teams started to find their rhythm. Inter dominated possession—61% by the 55th minute—but Leverkusen’s defensive shape remained compact. Every time Brozović received the ball, Wirtz or Aránguiz immediately closed him down. Every time Lukaku dropped deep, either Tapsoba or Sven Bender followed.
"Both teams are looking for a breakthrough," Rae observed. "Something will have to give as they search for a winner."
That moment came in the 58th minute when Barella attempted a pass through Leverkusen’s midfield, intended for Martínez, but Baumgartlinger read it perfectly. He slid in to intercept, sending the ball rolling to the feet of Aránguiz, who immediately looked forward.
Wirtz had dropped back again just beyond the centre circle, unmarked for a few moments. The pass found him, and his first touch was exquisite—a delicate cushion that took him away from Vidal’s challenge. His second touch was a sharp turn, suddenly facing forward with space ahead.
Inter’s defensive shape was stretched. Hakimi and Young had both pushed high, leaving space behind. Wirtz drove forward ten yards, drawing Alessandro Bastoni out of position, then played a perfectly weighted through ball into the channel between Škriniar and Bastoni.
Rakim had timed his run perfectly, staying onside by inches. He burst into the space, his acceleration leaving both defenders trailing. De Vrij scrambled across to cover, but Rakim was already clear.
He cut into the box from the side just as Handanović rushed out, trying to narrow the angle. Rakim nudged the ball with his left foot onto his right foot, setting himself up. The goalkeeper committed, diving to his right, anticipating the shot.
Instead, Rakim’s brought his right foot down, hefting the ball over the diving keeper, sending it floating across the open goal. De Vrij had recovered, running desperately to block the ball, but Schick, who was making a run into the six-yard box, arrived unmarked. The Czech striker lifted off, thundering the ball into the empty net with a resounding header.
Schick sprinted toward the corner flag, arms outstretched, as Rakim jumped on his back. Wirtz arrived seconds later, the three of them forming a pile as teammates converged. On the touchline, Bosz punched the air, relief and satisfaction evident.
"PATRICK SCHICK!" Rae roared. "Leverkusen retake the lead! What a move!"
"Brilliant combination play," Robson analysed. "Wirtz with the vision, Rex with the composure, and Schick with the finish. That’s European football at its finest."
[Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 Inter Milan — Patrick Schick 58’]
[64’]
Inter responded with urgency, with Conte making a double substitution—Christian Eriksen and Ivan Perišić on for Vidal and Young. The tactical shift was immediate, Inter adopting a more attacking 3-4-1-2 with Eriksen sitting behind the two strikers.
The Danish playmaker’s quality showed immediately as he received a pass from Brozović thirty yards out. He brilliantly turned away from Baumgartlinger’s challenge and launched a diagonal pass toward Hakimi’s run. The Moroccan controlled brilliantly with his chest before driving into the box.
His cross was dangerous, whipped in low and hard toward Lukaku at the near post. The Belgian striker attacked it, but Tapsoba somehow got his body in the way, the ball ricocheting off his thigh and out for a corner.
"Inter throwing everything forward now," Rae noted. "They need something from this match."
[73’]
Bosz made his first changes in the 73rd minute. The board went up: Leon Bailey and Kerem Demirbay on for Moussa Diaby and Florian Wirtz. They were instructed to see out the match and add pace on the counter to punish the Italian side.
Inter continued pressing despite the changes, as in the 78th minute, Eriksen received the ball in the centre of the field. Playing a clever reverse pass to Perišić on the left, he escaped Demirbay’s tackle. The Croatian winger cut inside past Lars Bender’s challenge and curled a shot toward the far post.
Hradecky dove full stretch, tipping it around the post with his fingertips. "Brilliant save from Hradecky!" Rae shouted. "The Finnish goalkeeper has been exceptional tonight!"
[82’]
Inter won a free-kick twenty-five yards out after Baumgartlinger fouled Barella. Eriksen stood over it, assessing his options. Leverkusen organised their wall, with Hradecky positioning himself carefully.
Eriksen struck it beautifully, curling around the wall with his left foot. The ball flew toward the top left corner, perfectly weighted and placed. Hradecky launched himself, fully extended—His fingertips deflected it just enough, the ball grazing the post and going out for a corner.
"WHAT A SAVE!" Rae roared. "Lukas Hradecky is keeping Leverkusen in front with world-class goalkeeping!"
The corner came in, Lukaku attacking it at the near post. His powerful header was directed downward, but the deflection of Hakimi’s shoulder deflected it away. The rebound fell to Martínez, whose shot was blocked by Tapsoba’s outstretched leg.
[87’]
Bosz made his final change in the 87th minute, bringing on Aleksandar Dragović in place of Patrick Schick, adding another centre-back to shore up the defence. Leverkusen shifted to a 5-3-1-1, sitting deep, daring Inter to break them down.
Inter’s attacks became increasingly desperate—long balls into the box, speculative shots from distance, half-chances that came to nothing. Leverkusen defended with discipline, every player behind the ball, blocking shots and clearing crosses.
[90]
The fourth official’s board went up—four minutes of added time. The BayArena crowd, limited as it was, found its voice, urging their team to hold on.
Inter launched one final assault when Eriksen picked up the ball centrally, playing a clever pass to Lukaku on the edge of the box. The Belgian held off Dragović, turning and firing a shot toward the near post. Hradecky was equal to it, gathering cleanly. The Finnish goalkeeper immediately looked to waste time, placing the ball carefully for the goal kick, adjusting his gloves, anything to run down the clock.
[90+3’]
Inter pushed everyone forward, including Handanović, for a final corner. Eriksen swung it in, a dangerous delivery toward the penalty spot. Bodies collided, Lukaku and Tapsoba battling for position. The ball glanced off Lukaku’s head, looping toward goal.
He couldn’t bring it down, though, and it hit the outside roof or netting harmlessly, flying out. The referee checked his watch, and there were only a few seconds remaining. Hradecky launched one last goal kick, sending it long and high, Aránguiz heading it into touch.
(Fweeet, Fweeet, Fweeeet!)
[FT: Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 Inter Milan]
The final whistle brought pure relief for the Leverkusen players, who embraced, their joy unrestrained—ten points from five matches. Qualification for the knockout stages was now in their hands.
"A massive result for Leverkusen," Rae concluded. "Beat Real Madrid in their final match, and they’re guaranteed qualification. Lose or draw, and it could come down to goal difference." 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚
"But what a performance," Robson added. "Wait, this just in, Real Madrid loses 2-0 to the Ukrainian side, meaning Leverkusen would only need a draw to guarantee their passage to the knockout stages." The moment he stated this, the jumbatrone flashed, showing the results from the Shakhtar and Madrid game.
