Forest Ranger, starting from Picking Up a Lynx Girl-Chapter 267 - : Let’s Go, Taking You to Meet Someone
Chapter 267 -267: Let’s Go, Taking You to Meet Someone
“Dr. Chen, Anren, I’m here, good thing I moved quickly.”
He punched Anren excitedly, “I knew you were up to no good, hmm, but you failed.”
Chen Ying let the young man sit in the passenger seat, while he took his bag to the back seat.
“Dr. Chen, you should sit in the front, the view is better.”
“No need, we still need to pick up a friend later.”
“Ah? Another person, who?”
Chen Ying smiled and did not answer.
As the car drove about three or four kilometers, a large lynx jumped onto the roadside.
Anren was startled and slammed on the brakes thankfully the other two were buckled up, or they definitely would have bumped heads.
“Can you even drive? Get out, let me do it. It’s one thing if you bump into me, but if you hit Dr. Chen, the station master and Uncle Tashi would kill you.”
Anren originally wanted to explain, but upon seeing the lynx approaching them, he dared not move.
“What should we do, what does this lynx want?”
Chen Ying rubbed his forehead which had hit the front seat back and rolled down the window.
“Dr. Chen is small…”
Before he could finish, the lynx had already jumped in and snuggled comfortably next to Chen Ying.
“Alright, we’ve picked up our last passenger, let’s go.”
Anren and his co-worker exchanged glances, stunned, driving off merely by muscle memory.
After several minutes, Anren finally looked in the rear mirror, “Dr. Chen, this lynx seems very familiar with you?”
“Yes, very familiar, we met at Zhuonai Lake.” Chen Ying scratched Lynx Sister’s neck and behind her ears.
The large lynx comfortably made soft “hu hu” noises, rolled half-way across the seat and gently nibbled Chen Ying’s arm.
“Okay, okay, lie down, I’ll stop fussing over you.”
Chen Ying seemingly casually, yet quite strategically, pointed in a direction.
“On the journey to release the snow leopard and back, I saw several kittens, very small, without a mother cat in sight. I suspect something unfortunate might have happened.”
He picked up binoculars and pretended to look for a while, “The mother cat might be hunting during the day, so I plan to check later tonight. If there really is no mother cat, we’ll have to take them back with us.”
They took a slight detour and finally found the den with kittens about thirty kilometers from the Protection Station.
There were four kittens, the weakest one was nearly gone.
Touching its belly, which was sunken and weak, barely able to make a sound.
Chen Ying quickly asked Anren and another young man to help catch the kittens and put them into a cage, then he started to check the body of the weakest kitten and fed it some water.
“Dr. Chen, I checked and there was no food in the den. It looks like these kittens have been hungry for quite a while.”
There was something he didn’t say.
Seeing how frail these kittens were, they hardly seemed like they could have wandered out on their own. How on Earth had Dr. Chen found this den of kittens?
He directed his puzzled look toward the crouching lynx, but then thought better of it, dismissing his guess as ridiculous.
If the lynx had found the kittens, wouldn’t it just eat them one by one as snacks? To actually bring people to rescue them?
Except for the smallest one, the other kittens were weakened by hunger.
They didn’t hurry to drive back. The three of them cooperated to make powdered milk and fed the kittens until they were full before heaving a sigh of relief.
But the fourth kitten might not make it.
Already being the smallest among its siblings, it must have struggled to get enough food normally.
After the mother cat’s mishap, the other kittens could barely hold on, but this little one was facing death straight away.
Wrapping the kitten in a soft towel, Chen Ying felt powerless.
He was a veterinarian, not a deity; in such cases, one can only leave it to fate.
The lynx came over, glanced at the shivering kitten curled up into a ball.
“Alright, I’m going to find food, I’ll come to you before the sun comes up.”
With that, it turned and vanished into the vast wilderness.
Chen Ying patted Anren, signaling them to drive back.
This time someone else drove, while Chen Ying still sat in the back, holding the almost motionless kitten wrapped in the towel.
The other kittens were kept in cages, and upon arriving back, would need a larger cage for disinfection and quarantine.
Originally, he planned to deworm them, but seeing their small size now, it seemed best to wait until they were stronger before administering medicine.
The Protection Station had received a heads up and prepared a seldom-used storeroom as a temporary shelter for the kittens.
“Dr. Chen, the room has been disinfected. Let me know if you need anything else.”
The room wasn’t big, about five or six square meters, with some woven bags piled up against the wall.
The woven bags were now all neatly covered with clean oilcloth, and the floor showed signs of a thorough cleaning.
For the conditions in this uninhabited area, this was the best they could offer.
Chen Ying sent Anren and his companion to help boil some water, making it easier to feed later.
Taking advantage of the absence of people, Chen Ying took out a small porcelain bottle from his pocket and poured out two Water Drop Pills.
He had made these on a whim previously, using scant materials, but they were effective nonetheless.
Once dissolved in water and mixed with cub formula, these pills could enhance the kittens’ immunity and activate their cellular functions.
He had also given a prescription to his teacher, which was designed specifically for nourishing weak animals.
This prescription could not be mass-produced and was quite specific, suitable for animals with congenital developmental issues.
The Water Drop Pills were an improved version of this recipe.
He hoped his teacher could help simplify it in the laboratory.
After all, many of the herbs in this prescription were rare and expensive, not deemed worthwhile for less special animals.
If they could develop a simpler version in the lab, most animals would benefit.
Pets could use it too, and the money made from pets could subsidize the expenses for wild animals.
Of course, this was his idea. Whether it was feasible and how it would be implemented was up to Professor Bai’s professional team.
Using the leftover water, Chen Ying mixed the formula, dissolved the pill, and fed each kitten with a syringe.
The three larger ones ate happily and sucked vigorously, but the smallest one hardly took a few drops. Just as Chen Ying was about to give up, it struggled and took two more sips, followed by a long rest.
Chen Ying simply grabbed a sleeping bag and laid it out on the floor.
The other kittens needed feeding every hour, but this small kitten needed feeding every fifteen minutes, and it was good if it could take two or three milliliters at a time.
Just like this, little by little, the small kitten unexpectedly made it through until dawn.
Sunlight streamed through the window, casting patches of light on the floor.
Chen Ying awoke with a start and checked on the kittens. Thankfully, they were all still alive.
The smallest one was still wrapped in a towel, seemingly motionless, but when he felt its small body, it was still warm, and although its little belly moved very slowly, it was still breathing, which was a good sign.
Staying up all night on the highland was different from in lower altitudes.
Chen Ying felt somewhat dazed.
At that moment, the family member who ran the small store brought in a bowl of noodles and urged Chen Ying to eat something and rest.
“I’ll watch them for you. Just tell me how to feed them. I’ve raised lambs at home, so leave it to me; you can rest easy.”
Chen Ying didn’t want to trouble her, but she pushed him out the door without another word, instructing him to sit at the entrance and guide her while he ate.
The night-time heater had a chimney extending outside the window, keeping the kittens’ milk warm at the edge of the stove.
The sister was very careful to feed the other kittens first and then gently wiped the little ones clean with a warm, damp, old towel, helping them to eliminate waste.
When it was the last kitten’s turn, her eyes were slightly red, and she fed it carefully and meticulously.
She wasn’t particularly beautiful, her cheeks tinged with a highland red that had darkened somewhat, but her gentle gaze and rough yet warm fingers seemed to glow under the sunlight.
After finishing his noodles, Chen Ying indeed struggled to keep going and found a place to wrap himself in clothes and sleep.
About three or four hours later, Yin Li came to wake him.
“What’s wrong with you? You look terrible, and your eye bags have almost reached your cheeks.”
Yin Li touched his forehead.
“It gets cold here at night on the highland. Be careful not to catch a cold. At this altitude, it’s easy to develop pulmonary or cerebral edema, and those can be fatal.”
Chen Ying nodded, splashed some water on his face, and felt a bit more awake.
Once outside, he saw that Lynx Sister was stretching out and sleeping on the platform.
She seemed undisturbed by the bustling surroundings.
But in reality, her ears were on alert, ready to dart away if anyone approached too closely, disappearing in three seconds.
After some physical activity outside, Chen revisited the kittens and noticed that they were now being looked after by a different person.
It was a younger sister-in-law who seemed quite competent, probably experienced with cats at home.
Indeed, when asked, she mentioned she had been raising cats since she was young, helping to raise all the kittens at home.
“There was also a mother cat that disappeared just after giving birth at my house. The kittens were only two or three days old, and I struggled for half a month to keep them all alive. It almost killed me.”
The young sister-in-law chatted non-stop, her voice clear and pleasant.
“My husband has gone to patrol the mountains, and I’ve been so bored I could grow mushrooms,” she continued. “I heard from sister-in-law that you needed help with the kittens, so I came uninvited. Dr. Chen, don’t mind my chatter. I would have suffocated from boredom these days.”
Chen Ying certainly didn’t mind, seeing that the young sister-in-law was skilled, which allowed him to confidently take Sister Lynx out for a walk.
“Go ahead then, I’ll stay here.”
“I’ll sleep here tonight, don’t worry about me. We girls raised on the plains aren’t that delicate.”
Chen Ying was extremely grateful, provided her with instructions on kitten care, left four Water Drop Pills to be dissolved in water and mixed with milk powder for feeding the kittens morning and evening, and then hurriedly joined Uncle Tashi and Sister Lynx in Yin Li’s car to the area where they had previously rescued someone.
