Game of the World Tree-Chapter 687
【 REAL IDENTITY 】
—
Evé held the Sword of Damocles and pursued the Evil Titan God as the two mythical beings raced through the sky above, one before the other, moving at extreme speed.
Swiftly shifting dark clouds and dazzling golden light carved long trails across the heavens, twisting and colliding in a spectacular yet terrifying display. The overwhelming aura and crushing pressure released by the two divine figures spread outward without restraint, attracting the attention of countless intelligent beings on the ground below.
Of course, most of them were ordinary people who knew nothing of the truth behind the phenomenon. They could only look up in fear as the sky roared and churned.
After suffering two sword strikes, the Evil Titan God was clearly in a much worse condition. Even as the surging clouds pushed their speed to the limit, they could not break free from the lock of the golden radiance behind them.
And whenever the purple black clouds attempted to disperse or change direction, a sword beam would descend at precisely the right moment from the rear. Each strike directly interrupted the clouds’ movement, forcing the fleeing Evil Titan God to continue its desperate flight under relentless pursuit.
“Goddess of Life! This is a war between me and the human gods! Why are you interfering?!”
From within the clouds came an enraged shout, its voice difficult to distinguish as male or female, filled with intense indignation.
From the golden light came a distant, ethereal female voice.
“Why? Eliminating evil is the responsibility and duty of all righteous gods.”
“Bullshit! You hypocritical false gods of faith!”
The dark clouds cursed furiously.
As the words fell, the dark-purple clouds suddenly slowed. Flickers of fire burst forth within them, before erupting into countless blazing fireballs.
Each of those fireballs carried a terrifying aura, with every single one possessing power comparable to that of ninth-circle magic.
However, the searing flames were not hurled toward the golden light behind them. Instead, the dark clouds cast them straight down from the sky.
In an instant, a dreadful rain of fire poured across the firmament, like the coming of the apocalypse.
Eve’s expression tightened as she looked down toward the ground.
Beneath her lay a vast and bustling city.
The winding Vymur River flowed through its center, dividing districts and reflecting the burning sky above. Smoke already billowed through the streets, and beyond the towering city walls, dense masses of figures were besieging the city from all sides.
They were elves, the very players participating in this war campaign.
This place was one of the major cities of the Maple Leaf Territory, Zelouan.
As the sudden rain of fire descended from the sky, the elves below cried out in alarm. Even the Red Maple Kingdom army defending Zelouan fell into chaos.
Seeing this, Eve’s expression darkened slightly.
She exhaled softly, raised her hand, and used some of her divine power to manifest a pale golden barrier above the city, blocking the terrifying rain of fire.
However, this action inevitably slowed her down.
“Foolish.”
A mocking laugh came from within the dark clouds. Then the clouds accelerated once more and fled toward the distance.
With the dreadful rain of fire blocked, cheers erupted from the elves on the ground. Gazing at the faintly visible golden figure in the sky, their faces lit up with excitement. Řα₦O͍ᛒËṩ
“Look! It’s the Goddess! The Goddess had saved us!”
“Wow! The Goddess got a new attire!”
“My waifu is so beautiful!”
Evé: “…”
The corner of her mouth twitched. Then, out of habit, she scattered a portion of her divine power, transforming it into countless light particles before continuing her pursuit in the direction where the dark-purple clouds had fled.
However, after only a few steps, something caught her attention, and she looked back strangely in the direction of Zelouan.
From within the city, she could vaguely sense a group of new believers. Curious, she decided to listen more closely and discovered that some humans were praying to her, feeling gratitude for her intervention and protection.
They had become her shallow believers just moments ago.
Evé: “…”
That works too?!
She froze for a brief moment.
Looking again at the dark-purple clouds that had already escaped far away, the frustration in her heart dissipated by more than half.
With a few thoughts forming, her eyes brightened slightly, and she gave chase once more.
Thus, the two mythical beings continued their cat-and-mouse game, throwing the entirety of the Maple Leaf Territory into utter chaos.
The Evil Titan God was not inherently faster than Evé, but every so often it would unleash a rain of fire upon the human settlements it passed in an attempt to hinder Eve’s relentless pursuit.
And Evé, upon seeing the rain of fire, would calmly take action each time to block it.
Ideally, whenever she intervened, she would also deliberately reveal herself, displaying her radiant and sacred form in full glory, while scattering a few shimmering light particles as an added visual effect.
As a result, she would gain a fresh wave of new believers, and if her distribution of faith were visualized on a map at that very moment, one would see that as the two mythical beings chased one another across the land, Evé had almost illuminated a continuous trail of faith along the path she had passed.
Naturally, after performing all this, Evé was no longer able to fully catch up to the fleeing Evil Titan God.
In this manner, the two mythical beings crossed nearly half of the Maple Leaf Territory and finally entered its southwestern heartland, the domain of Maple Leaf City.
The Evil Titan God within the dark clouds repeated the same old trick, once again unleashing a terrifying rain of fire.
After skillfully blocking the fire rain and conveniently revealing herself once more before the mortals on the ground, Evé resumed her pursuit of the Evil Titan God.
This time, however, the Evil Titan God did not continue fleeing farther away. Instead, it suddenly condensed into a burst of purple light and darted into a range of hills shrouded in thick gray mist, thereby vanishing from her sight in an instant.
Hmm?
Evé raised an eyebrow slightly.
She quickly followed and likewise descended upon the hills.
Gray mist permeated the surroundings, carrying with it a corrosive power that had reduced all the trees across the landscape to withered husks.
And the closer she drew to the core of the gray mist, the stronger the corrosion became. Eventually, even the ground gradually darkened, wreathed in faint strands of black fog.
Nonetheless, despite being a death trap for any extraordinary mortal beings, it caused Evé nothing more than a slight frown. With a casual wave of her hand, the mist gradually dispersed, revealing a massive stone gate before her.
It was an ancient, weathered gate, engraved with mysterious cuneiform script and surrounded by rough, primitive relief carvings, entirely reminiscent of Titan civilization.
Beyond the stone gate lay a stretch of pure, pitch-black darkness, accompanied by faint spatial fluctuations.
This… looks to be an entrance to a Titan ruin?
Evé thought as she cast an appraising glance at the damaged stone gate, tightened her grip on the Sword of Damocles, and decided to boldly step inside.
The moment Evé crossed the threshold, the surrounding scene changed abruptly, and she found herself standing within an enormous palace.
Looking around, the palace stretched into the distance in every direction, its vast halls and towering ceilings dwarfing even Evé herself. Though she had deliberately reshaped her current incarnate form to be roughly comparable in size to the Evil Titan God, the sheer magnitude of the furnishings and architecture within this place made her appear like a mere dwarf stepping into a giant’s abode.
On both sides of the main hall stood four colossal Titan statues, each nearly a thousand meters tall. They loomed like sentinels frozen in time, their forms lifelike and imposing.
At the center of the palace stood a colossal throne, seemingly crafted from obsidian, the favored material of the Titan race. Seated high upon it was the very Evil Titan God itself that Evé had been pursuing all this time.
Its physique appeared even larger than when it had been fleeing earlier, and the hand that Evé had severed beforehand now seemed already fully regrown. 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂
The Evil Titan God sat there calmly, its massive form radiating a quiet, terrifying aura as it gazed at Evé. A hint of scrutiny lingered in its single violet-gold eye, and the demeanor it now displayed was utterly different from the enraged, chaotic being she had faced moments ago.
It narrowed its single eye slightly and spoke in an even tone.
“Should I address you as Yggdrasill, or as Evé?”
This time, the voice was no longer androgynous, but a deep and authoritative male voice.
Eve’s heart skipped a beat as surprise, realization, and curiosity all flashed across her eyes within that instant.
After a couple of seconds, she smiled faintly and replied.
“Then should I address you as Sehemmet…or as Anos?”
The Titan seated upon the divine throne froze briefly, before bursting into a loud, hearty laughter that echoed throughout the entire palace.
Before long, however, the Titan’s expression cooled, and his gaze toward Evé took on a subtle edge of mockery.
“The former leader of the Ancient Gods has fallen so far as to live under an assumed name?”
“That is precisely what I wished to ask,” Evé replied calmly, her voice unwavering as she met the Titan’s indifferent gaze.
“I never expected the former King of the Titans to have survived, merely clinging to existence by inhabiting his daughter’s body, or perhaps, seeking to resurrect himself through the power of faith.”
At her words, a flicker of cold light flashed through the Titan’s single eye, but it was quickly replaced by an expression of pain, and the aura around him suddenly became chaotic.
He all of a sudden, visibly appeared to be wavering and distraught. However, this abnormal state lasted only an instant before he forcefully suppressed it.
Watching the Titan’s expression return to normal, and sensing the peculiar aura that had leaked out during that brief turmoil, Evé let out a soft, measured sigh.
“Your Majesty Anos, as the one who holds the authority over the Laws of Life, I must hereby offer you a warning.”
“Even for a Greater Ancient God such as yourself, forcibly occupying the body of another being, or fusing with the soul of another existence, will inevitably lead to grave consequences down the line…”
To think that he had taken possession of his own daughter’s body!
After sensing the two utterly opposed divine soul auras within the Evil Titan God, Evé had already understood the truth: the being before her was not the Titan Princess Sehemmet, but the Titan King Anos himself.
This supreme ruler of the Titan Era had not truly perished!
Instead, he appeared to had achieved a form of “resurrection” through the use of his daughter’s body.
Of course, perhaps due to his insufficient grasp concerning the laws of the soul, or perhaps because the act had been carried out in great haste, his method of “resurrection” seemed to be rather incomplete.
The soul of Titan King Anos had not completely devoured Sehemmet’s soul. Instead, the two had been strangely fused, or rather, had reached a certain level of accord, thereby achieving a form of mutual compromise.
At this moment, Evé seemingly had connected all the dots and more or less understood what had likely transpired.
The establishment of the Church of Twilight, along with the way its believers had aggressively spread their faith, was likely Anos’s attempt to harness the collective power of faith to fully stabilize his soul and complete the process of his resurrection.
Earlier, during their chase, it was most likely the Titan Princess Sehemmet who was in control, but now, however, it was the Titan King Anos at the reins.
After hearing Evé’s words, the Evil Titan God paused briefly, then burst into laughter.
His laughter was bold and resonant, echoing throughout the vast palace. For a moment, it seemed to fill every corner. After laughing, the Titan suddenly composed himself, the mirth in his eyes replaced by a playful, almost teasing tone.
“Very well then. Goddess of Life, would you be willing to make a deal with me?”
Meeting the Evil Titan God’s gaze, Evé remained silent for several seconds.
Then she smiled faintly.
“…Do you truly believe I would trust the words of a fallen evil god?”
The Evil Titan God raised an eyebrow.
“Fallen? Who had fallen, exactly?”
As he spoke, he looked at Evé with a measured gaze, a trace of pity flickering in his eyes.
“I have heard that a thousand years ago, the great World Tree, Yggdrasill was jointly besieged by the very gods of faith it had nurtured with its own hands, and thus, ultimately ‘fell’…”
“Tell me, was it I, a mythical being who slept for an unknown number of years, who fell, or those traitorous gods of faith who betrayed their benefactor?”
“Lady Evé, are you truly not enraged? Do you not wish to reclaim what rightfully belongs to you? I have heard that the Supreme Ruler of the Fifth Era was the great World Tree, yet now those despicable traitors have stolen the authority that should have been yours.”
“Do you not crave Vengeance? Do you not wish to break free from the shackles of fate?”
The Evil Titan God’s words seemed to carry a strange and subtle power and as she kept listening, Evé felt a faint trace of resentment rising within her heart.
It was an emotion inherited from the memories of her predecessor, a lingering wariness and vigilance toward the very gods who had betrayed her former self, buried deep within her since awakening in the world of Seigües.
That vigilance and suspicion continued to expand, soon transforming into hostility, and then shifting from hostility into anger, which steadily influenced Eve’s very own soul and even began to erode her will.
The Laws of Vengeance!
Realizing this, Eve’s heart tightened and she immediately circulated her divine power and forcefully suppressed that strange surge of emotion.
Then she looked toward the One-eyed Titan seated high upon the throne, her gaze growing increasingly guarded and grave.
As expected of an ancient and powerful Greater God.
Even after being reborn through another, lesser body, and even while relying on another mythical being’s divinity, he could still wield such power, capable enough to even directly influence the will of a true god.
Watching Evé regain her composure, a hint of regret flashed through Anos’s eyes.
“What a pity. Your will is even firmer than I had anticipated.”
After speaking, he let out a soft, almost contemplative sigh.
“However, you should not have wasted so much time speaking with me for so long.”
As his words fell, vast divine power surged from the Evil Titan God. At the same time, the eight Titan statues within the palace suddenly radiated dense amount of faith energy.
All that power of faith then converged upon the sitting Titan, before erupting into dazzling brilliance which directly crash against the residual power of the Sword of Damocles.
In the next instant, the seal that had prevented the Titan from using his domain shattered abruptly, and the dark-purple illusory curtain descended once more, enveloping Evé within its oppressive expanse.
As the celestial domain descended, and all the power of the laws within the palace fell under the Evil Titan God’s control.
“Seal.”
He uttered a single word in the Titan tongue.
With the sound of his voice, irresistible law power instantly suppressed Eve’s divine power, sealing it away.
Looking at Evé, whose aura had suddenly plummeted, the Evil Titan God smiled.
“Lady Evé, the next time you fight a mythical being, do not waste so much time. I told you long ago, you have grown too rusty in battle.”
“This divine incarnate body of yours, along with this Titan divine sword, I shall be taking them.”
“I thank you for delivering such a wonderful gift to me at this precious moment where I needed it the most.”
However, in the face of the Evil Titan God’s mocking gaze, strangely Eve’s expression still remained calm.
She even smiled at him in return.
“…Oh? Is that so?”
As her words fell, golden green light suddenly blossomed behind her. The dark-purple divine domain was instantly shattered by a power even greater and more vast.
A massive tree branch extended from behind Evé, carrying terrifying vitality and boundless divine power.
Behind her, space twisted slightly, revealing a black triumphal stone gate.
“The World Tree… the Gate of Reversal…!?”
The Titan’s expression tightened slightly.
“Likewise, Your Majesty Anos, you should not have wasted so much time speaking with me for so long.”
Evé sighed in the same manner.
