Gasp! She's a Time Traveler Using Modern Tech to Improve Ancient Life-Chapter 655 - 653: Let Me Feel Your Pulse
Lin Wanwan played two games of Chinese chess with Master Liang, and even without cheating, it was a fair share of wins and losses. The result was pretty evenly matched, earning her praises from the master and senior brothers alike.
After chess, Lin Wanwan performed a tea ceremony for everyone. Although she didn’t add chopped scallions, garlic, and ginger like during the Tang Dynasty tea ceremony, her overall flow and demeanor were still on point, winning rounds of applause.
Lu Shouyue looked at Lin Wanwan with eyes full of admiration and affection. The girl he loved was truly talented, clever, and wise.
"Your little junior sister sure knows how to do many things," Master Liang said with a sip of the tea brewed by Lin Wanwan, smiling so much that his eyes nearly closed. "In the future, you senior brothers must take good care of her."
"Of course."
"Absolutely."
The senior brothers all assured in unison, creating a harmonious atmosphere.
"Little sister thanks her senior brothers for their special care!" In the high society banquets of the Great Tang, Lin Wanwan had learned quite a bit about social interaction, handling such situations with ease, without the slightest stage fright.
As the youngest junior sister of the sect, it was only natural for her to receive some affection, given that even the youngest third brother was already forty-two years old this year.
After finishing the tea, everyone moved to the dining area, where cold dishes were already laid out on the table.
The dining table here was a super large round table, comfortably seating fifteen people with room to spare.
Of the three families that arrived, the oldest child was the second brother’s kid, in fourth grade. The other two included one who had just started elementary school and a preschooler, all playing together noisily and refusing to sit properly at the table, cramming in one spot, making the table appear even more spacious.
Once everyone had poured their drinks, a waiter entered, carrying a tray, along with a few middle-aged people.
These were prominent figures in the Ancient City, having heard that Master Liang and others were here, they specially came with wine glasses to toast.
Master Liang was a professor at Ancient Capital University, the dean of the Chinese medicine school, a specially appointed traditional medicine expert at various hospitals, the private health doctor for the provincial leader, and also served as the head of the health group at the Ancient City sanatorium.
With so many titles, there were plenty of people willing to give him face, and naturally, there was also a lot of socializing.
Besides Master Liang, Lin Wanwan’s three senior brothers were each directors in their domains, with the eldest brother being the vice dean of Hai City Traditional Chinese Medicine College, and they too had plenty of greetings to make.
Lin Wanwan simply smiled and dealt with the many strangers, excusing her face-blindness; unless someone had particularly distinctive features or memorable points, she really couldn’t remember them.
Her eldest brother Kang Hongjing’s young girlfriend, Pan Xiaolei, was quite lively in such occasions. She sat to Lin Wanwan’s left, occasionally leaning over to exchange pleasantries and chat.
"Wanwan, where did you learn your tea art? It’s amazing, did you take classes?" Pan Xiaolei asked Lin Wanwan.
Take classes? Would those half-baked modern tea art classes really be worth spending money on?
Lin Wanwan thought to herself; she was taught by the great scholar Cao from the Sui-Tang era! If she wanted to, she could even apply for intangible cultural heritage recognition.
"I self-taught from ancient books." Lin Wanwan couldn’t reveal Cao’s name, so she had to give herself some credit.
"Wow, self-taught? Well, you could still sign up for a class to further improve. I took a class in Hai City, and felt I gained a lot," Pan Xiaolei said, pulling out her phone to show Lin Wanwan some atmosphere photos taken during her tea class.
Lin Wanwan played along and looked at them for a while, but even the placement of the tea sets in the photos was against proper etiquette—a class clearly designed to scam young, cultured women out of their money.
Though the Huaxia tea ceremony had evolved over time, its basic etiquette remained unchanged.
After speaking much with the aristocratic women of the Great Tang, she had inevitably picked up some ways of handling such matters.
At this table, only Lin Wanwan and Pan Xiaolei were of similar age; the rest were at least a cycle older, so Pan Xiaolei kept chatting with Lin Wanwan.
Lu Shouyue was super annoyed, thinking to himself about how this girl lacked awareness; why keep pestering my girlfriend instead of her boyfriend?
Fortunately, the hot dishes started arriving, and Lin Wanwan, a little foodie, was drawn in by the exquisite dishes, not caring about Pan Xiaolei’s luxurious lifestyle chatter.
There were many dishes Lin Wanwan didn’t recognize, which gave the opportunity for the big foodie Lu Shouyue to explain them to her quietly.
Eldest brother Kang Hongjing managed the table, orchestrating the conversation primarily around the main guest, Master Liang, naturally neglecting his young girlfriend, Pan Xiaolei.
With her boyfriend talking eloquently with everyone on one side, and a sweet couple on the other, Pan Xiaolei tried to join the conversation several times but was deftly shut down by Lu Shouyue, leaving her frustrated and chugging water—she didn’t drink soft drinks, too much sugar being bad for aging.
After the meal, Kang Hongjing mentioned he had arranged a suite with two rest rooms; those who wished to rest could do so, and those who wanted to go out and play could do that too.
The villa had a swimming pool, gym, karaoke room, library, oxygen bar, bar, strawberry garden, mulberry garden, and orange grove. Apart from the bar, everything else was free to eat and play, allowing free movement.
Master Liang and the teacher’s wife, being older, had a habit of taking afternoon naps, so they went to rest. The preschooler, Liang Banxia, was also taken by her mom for a nap.
Also, Kang Hongjing, the host today, needed a nap after drinking too much.
The rest, obviously not in a rush to rest, took the chance to enjoy the outing.
Lu Shouyue, holding Lin Wanwan’s hand, seemed eager for some couple time, but single Pan Xiaolei, with no sense of timing, clung to Lin Wanwan.
What choice was there? Lin Wanwan was the only one here her age; she couldn’t very well seek out those forty-something sisters full of drama.
Lu Shouyue: So annoyed!
The three of them went to the strawberry garden to pick strawberries, and during some idle chat, Pan Xiaolei mentioned she had irregular, very light menstrual cycles and often missed periods.
Lin Wanwan was surprised, "Then why not let Brother Kang take a look? He can help regulate it, and you’ll be fine."
Pan Xiaolei seemed alarmed, "Oh no, I don’t want to take Chinese medicine, it’s too bitter." 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚
After a pause, she animatedly added, "Besides, fewer periods isn’t bad! Didn’t the internet say that a woman’s eggs are fixed in number, and after they’re gone, menopause starts, and you start aging? If I have fewer periods, I age slower too!"
Lin Wanwan laughed at her pseudo-scientific statement, and after thinking about it, said, "How about I take your pulse? Maybe acupuncture without medicine could be an option."
"Acupuncture is painful too, right?" Pan Xiaolei was still a bit worried.
Lin Wanwan confidently replied, "Don’t worry, my acupuncture skills are quite good, it won’t hurt much."
Pan Xiaolei, having given up on picking strawberries, thought for a while and agreed to let Lin Wanwan take a look.
She also wanted to see if Lin Wanwan was really as skilled as she seemed, since having her pulse taken didn’t cost her anything.
And so, with nothing to do but hold onto the strawberry basket for Lin Wanwan, Lu Shouyue found himself...
