Chapter 113: Not Over Yet (2)

Commander Fred stood on the open corridor, observing Caleb and the duchess sharing a moment. A smile graced his hardened features, knowing things were on the right path.

’I never thought she would fall this hard.’ The commander pondered. ’Even a strong woman like her wants someone to lean on. I’m glad Caleb is the one.’

This all began as a way to get Caleb on the duchess’ side, but it quickly turned into something even he didn’t see coming. He might not know much about Caleb, but his gut told him Caleb was alright.

The commander looked to his right, where Jess stood with a deep frown, exuding an aura capable of sending shivers down a man’s spine.

"I’m not sure why you look so pissed, Jess." Fred said as he shook his head. "Aren’t you already his lover?"

"..."

The catwoman said nothing, apparently not hearing the commander while her gaze stayed locked on the Duchess and Caleb. When she saw Caleb kiss the duchess, Jess couldn’t help but clench her fist in annoyance.

’I should have been bolder.’ She thought. ’It won’t happen again.’ The sight was the push she needed to know what she wanted.

She wasn’t going to play around anymore. If Caleb doesn’t make a move, she will be the first to initiate intimacy. The catwoman had no clue about relationship matters, but she knew what she wanted.

"The duchess may be the first to kiss him, but it won’t be the same for the real deal." Jess finally replied, taking the commander aback. fɾēewebnσveℓ.com

"O-okay..." The commander couldn’t help but step back a little. He had no intention of getting between whatever was bound to happen. "It’s your life, woman."

"Commander Fred!"

A sudden call turned Fred and Jess to the left, where a man dressed in official clothes rushed over. The commander immediately knew what this was about.

"Mr. Grewn," Fred turned to the man. "How can I be of assistance?"

"Don’t give me that, commander." The man known as Mr. Grewn arrived before the two with a frown. "You know why we’re here, so why didn’t call us when that man arrived?!"

The man pointed towards the garden, where Caleb and Silvia were still having their moment.

"Are you trying to keep him away from His Majesty?" Mr. Grewn stepped closer, staring right into Fred’s eyes. "You should know what your actions could lead to."

"Oh. I’m aware." Fred replied calmly, not backing down. "But Mr. Zane is his own man. He can do whatever he wants. This brings me to my next question. Why aren’t you interrupting them?"

"T-that’s..." M. Grewn stepped back, unable to come up with a reply.

His orders were precise; find Caleb and give him the Royal Invitation. However, he was to approach the issue delicately. Caleb was a man the king didn’t want to force into accepting his invitation.

While Mr. Grewn was confused by those orders, they still came from his king. Moreover, Caleb was with the Duchess. Regardless of whatever position he held, the duchess was still above him in status.

Any misbehaviour on his part while he could clearly see Caleb and the Duchess being romantic with each other could ruin his mission among others. He couldn’t afford to offend Caleb.

"I thought so." Fred grinned in triumph. "You’ll get your chance to speak with Mr. Zane. But till then, you’ll have to wait until they’re done."

Mr. Grewn gritted his teeth in annoyance. There was nothing he could do with his hands tied. He turned to look at the new couple and hoped Caleb didn’t ghost him.

Suddenly, Caleb turned his head around, staring straight at the man and gestured for him to approach. Mr. Grewn was taken aback for a moment but quickly regained his composure.

"Lucky you." Commander Fred muttered, watching as the man rushed over. "Unfortunately for you, Caleb is with the duchess now."

"..."

Jess lifted her brows to stare at the commander. She knew what this was about, but she honestly didn’t care much. After all, she had her own agenda with Caleb.

.......

"Hah, it’s him again." Silvia groaned as she sat up to receive their guest. "Why did you call him over?"

"I already know what he’s here for and also to get this over with." Caleb shrugged. "Besides, I don’t want any interruptions later on."

"Yeah, you’ll have to see the king eventually anyway." She straightened her clothes to look more presentable. She didn’t want anyone besides her man to see her assets. "Also, the incident that happened in the capital is not over yet."

"What do mean?" Caleb furrowed his brows, his interest piqued. "I dealt with the demon generals; the king and his people shouldn’t have an issue dealing with the aftermath."

"That’s exactly what I’m talking about, Caleb." The duchess sighed. "An attack happened right in the heart of the kingdom, and the king failed to stop it in time. The people are already blaming him for his incompetence.

"There has been no word on who the responsible party is, except the Growian Kingdom who took advantage of the chaos. In the comi—"

Before the duchess could finish her statement, Mr. Grewn arrived.

"Duchess," Mr. Grewn bowed to the duchess and then to Caleb. "Mr. Zane. It’s an honour to make your acquittance. My name is Maxwell Grewn and I’ve been sent by His Royal Majesty."

"Yeah, I know." Caleb replied from his seat. "Please get to the point. As you can see, we’re busy."

"Of course, Mr. Zane." The man nodded and swiftly retrieved a scroll from his storage ring. "This is a Royal Invitation from His Majesty King Alexander Gray. The king wishes to meet with you as soon as possible."

"Mm." Caleb accepted the scroll, putting it away a second later. "Is there a deadline for this invitation? I hate to make the king wait." He flashed a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes.

"Eh, not exactly." The man gulped. "I was only sent to make sure the invite reached you. But it would be best to not keep the king waiting."

The man still didn’t understand why the king placed such importance on treating Caleb with respect. Then again, it was not his place to question the decisions of his king.

"I see..." Caleb nodded in understanding. "Well then, you can leave now. Tell His Majesty that I will be in the capital as soon as possible."

"Yes, of course." The man didn’t delay and bowed before making himself scarce.

"You’re not going to go immediately, are you?" Silvia asked while she and Caleb watched the man disappear.

"Nope," Caleb replied, turning to face the duchess. "I just got my hands on a charming woman. You don’t think I’ll leave her without taking care of her first, do you?"

He winked at the duchess, making her face turn red. But the duchess was not a little girl.

"Ooh... I like the sound of that." Silvia drew in closer and captured Caleb’s lips with hers.
