Chapter 826: Chapter 826: Survivors

Jiang Shi walked over to where the boy waited, her expression softening slightly as she looked down at him.

"What’s your name?" she asked.

The boy swallowed hard, his voice barely a whisper. "L-Liu Chen, immortal fairy,"

"Liu Chen," Jiang Shi repeated. She knelt down so they were at eye level. "I’m sorry we couldn’t save everyone. But I promise you this: what happened here today will not go unanswered."

The boy looked at her with eyes that had aged decades in a single day. He nodded slowly, not being able to utter a single word.

There were no emotions on his face and no expectations in his eyes.

What could he even muster? He had already lost everything he had once called "family." The man who did it was dead; there was no revenge to take. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺

These things no longer held any meaning to him.

For a little boy, such things were even more difficult to comprehend. He was at an age where he was still playing with his friends in mud and on farms.

But now even his friends were dead.

Seeing the blank look in his eyes, Jiang Shi pursed her lips. She wanted to pat his head to assure him, but she paused, thinking, ’what right do I have to do that?’

"Sister Jiang." Chen Xueyan gently lowered her qi barrier and placed a hand on the boy’s shoulder. "What should we do now?"

She looked around and could not see anything but destruction. They could not let the boy live in a place like this on his own.

Jiang Shi stood, her robes billowing in the cold wind. The setting sun painted the ruined village in shades of orange and red, like fire and blood mixed together.

It seemed like Jiang Shi had a similar thought as she said, "During the fight, I sensed several life signatures around the village in hiding. I made sure no harm came to them during our fight even if the property here was destroyed."

"Looking at her," she added. "You gather them; I will send a letter."

"Letter?" Chen Xueyan looked confused seeing Jiang Shi bringing out a brush and paper.

"We need to inform the law enforcement officers of the empire about what happened in the empire."

While she spoke, the brush moved on its own, writing down a letter.

"We need the soldiers of the empire here to help the people. Till then, we will do as much as we can." Even though she said that, Jiang Shi wrote two different letters.

One was to the law enforcement, as she had said, and the other was for the Sect leader, Wuhan.

She sent it directly through a secret Talisman everyone of the disciples was given.

"Once you locate them all, gather them at the restaurant not far from here. That place is still intact. I will send this message in the meantime.’ Jiang Shi explained what she was doing through voice transmission.

"I will help them." With a final nod, Chen Xueyan took the boy away with her.

Jiang Shi finished the letter and charmed it using her powers to fly towards the nearest city and inform the soldiers stationed there.

She used her seal, which had the mark of the sect, as proof of authenticity.

After what Noah had done at the competition, the name of the sect had spread throughout the empire, and everyone knew about them now.

Many even wanted to participate, but only a few talented individuals were allowed in the outer sect.

They were stationed on a different mountain where Elder Shisan would go to train them from time to time.

Wuhan had even brought people he trusted from the empire to help with the management and handling of the disciples.

After making sure the letter was sent properly, she patiently waited for a reply from Wuhan.

It did not take long before it arrived as well.

You did well; settle in the village and wait for the help to arrive. Help them as much as you can. I am proud of you.

The simple yet concise message from her master brought a smile to Jiang Shi’s face.

She trusted and admired everyone who led the sect. Especially Noah and her own master; getting acknowledged by one of them made her feel happy.

Jiang Shi turned and walked towards the place she told her senior sister to meet.

It did not take long for her to find it. It appeared that Chen Xueyan was still not there, so she decided to look around.

The place was empty, as if those who occupied it before had run away when the attack happened.

She found the stash of food and ingredients still fresh inside it.

"Should I cook something for the injured?" Jiang Shi entered the kitchen and put on an apron before picking up the wok from the stack.

She looked around the kitchen, taking inventory of what was available.

There were vegetables that had been harvested recently, some dried meat hanging from hooks, jars of preserved ingredients, and sacks of rice and grain.

’Something warm and nourishing,’ she thought as she began to work.

Jiang Shi had learned to cook from her parents before they died, and she was saved by her old sect members.

Now, those lessons proved useful.

She started a fire in the stove, her qi making the process easier as she controlled the flames to the perfect temperature.

Then she began preparing a simple but hearty congee, adding dried herbs that would help replenish qi and soothe shock.

The rhythmic sounds of chopping filled the quiet kitchen. Dice the ginger, slice the scallions, and tear the dried mushrooms into smaller pieces.

Soon she heard voices coming from outside. She knew that it was Chen Xueyan who had gathered the survivors.

She had already prepared enough food to feed at least twenty people.

The door opened, and Chen Xueyan entered, followed by a group of survivors. Jiang Shi counted quickly—fifteen people in total.

Some were elderly, leaning on makeshift crutches or supported by others. A few were children, their faces smudged with dirt and tears.

The rest were adults who looked like they had aged years in a single day.

Liu Chen walked among them, holding the hand of an elderly woman who seemed barely able to stand.

"Sister Jiang," Chen Xueyan called out as she guided the group inside. "I’ve gathered everyone I could find. Most of them were hiding in cellars or had managed to escape into the forest when the attack began."
