Chapter 39: Some time with Dhayun [1]

Dhagyun leaned over to him and hushed in his ear "Do you still have that scar?"

Hm? Brandon looked into her purple eyes and glanced away "Fuck off..."

Hearing this, Dhayun's eyes softened in affection and she patted his head.

"You are cute as always, Woonie."

Brandon sighed and swatted Dhayun's hand away from his head, "Stop that."

Dhayun just laughed, not the least bit deterred. "Still as grumpy as ever, huh? Some things never change."

Elena let out an exasperated sigh "Can you two stop flirting already?"

Brandon immediately turned to her and uttered "Flirting? With her? Hell no."

Dhayun placed a hand on her chest in mock offense "Wow. Way to crush my heart, Woonie."

Brandon shot her a dry glare "You don't even have a heart."

"Hahaha..."

Calistra, who had been mostly silent, looked at Dhayun for a long moment before finally speaking. "How long have you two known each other?"

Brandon exhaled, rubbing the back of his neck "Since childhood. Back in Korea."

Dhayun grinned. "Yep. I used to be his babysitter."

He gave her a deadpan look "You are not..."

She tilted her head with a smile "Really? Because I remember you crying when I stole your ice cream—"

Brandon clamped his hand over her mouth before she could finish. "Shut. up."

Dhayun, still grinning behind his hand, licked his palm.

Brandon immediately pulled his hand away, looking disgusted. "You dumbass."

Dhayun let out a hearty chuckle "Hah! Still grossed out by that?"

"Obviously..." Brandon wiped his hand aggressively on her blazer, glaring at her.

With that, the group finally made their way toward the cafeteria.

—---

They made their way to the food counter, and as they grabbed their trays, Dhayun piled her plate with food like she hadn't eaten in days.

Brandon grabbed his food and followed the others to an empty table.

As they sat down, he finally let out a long, exhausted sigh, staring at his tray.

Looking at Dhayun who was beside him, he asked "So you came here after you awakened your ether core in the age of 20?"

Eating her food, Dhayun nodded her head "Mhm. I was really surprised that I was also an awakener."

"My mom wasn't exactly thrilled about me jumping into the whole 'dangerous monster-killing life' thing. She wanted me to just... ignore it."

"Seal my ether core and move on. Live a nice, boring life without any risks."

"What kind of life would that be? I'd rather die than live as some regular-ass human, working a boring job, waiting for time to pass."

She smirked. "I need excitement. I need something fun. And being an awakener sounded way more interesting than some desk job."

"So i became an awakener and joined the Solvyrn Academy..."

Not everyone can be awakeners, at the age of 20 some people awaken ether cores in their body.

If they really want to be an awakener, they can join the Solvyrn Academy to train.

And if they don't want to live this dangerous life of killing abberants, they can seal their ether core and stay as a human.

"You are reckless as ever..."

Dhayun grinned, swallowing down a mouthful of her sandwich "And you're still the same boring guy who eats like a malnourished rabbit."

Brandon gave her a flat look "I eat normally."

Before he could argue, she reached across his tray and snatched a piece of his grilled chicken with her fork.

Without hesitation, she stuffed it into her mouth and chewed, nodding in satisfaction.

Brandon let out a sigh "This bitch..."

Elena, watching the exchange, sighed as she delicately picked at her own meal "You two have a very strange relationship."

Eira, sitting across from them asked "Do you always steal his food like that?"

Dhayun grinned. "Of course. It's tradition."

Brandon simply stared at her "It's not a tradition. You just have no manners."

Dhayun ignored him and instead reached into her own tray, tearing a chunk of her garlic bread before plopping it onto his plate.

"Here. Since I'm such a generous person."

Brandon stared at the piece of bread in front of him. Then at her. "What is this?"

"My favorite," Dhayun replied casually, taking another bite of her food. "Garlic bread. Eat it."

Brandon frowned, eyeing her suspiciously "You never share your food."

"Yeah, well." She shrugged, not meeting his gaze "Just shut up and eat it, idiot."

He narrowed his eyes slightly "Did you poison it?"

Dhayun's lips twitched "God, you're annoying. Just eat the damn bread, Woonie."

Hearing that stupid childhood nickname again made him cringe, but he still sighed and took the piece of garlic bread, biting into it reluctantly.

It was good.

Dhayun smirked as she saw the way his expression changing subtly "Good, right?"

Brandon nodded his head "It's decent."

"You love it."

"Shut up."

Meanwhile, Elena and Eira were just watching this entire exchange unfold like they were witnessing some strange, unspoken ritual.

"Is this... normal?" Elena asked, glancing at Calistra.

Calistra, who had been quiet the entire time, sipped her drink "It's normal for them."

Dhayun picked up another piece of food from her tray and before he could react, she shoved it into Brandon's mouth.

Brandon's eyes widened as he nearly choked on the unexpected bite "Mmh?! What—!"

Dhayun laughed seeing his face "See? You love my food."

Brandon coughed and gently swallowed before glaring at her "I swear to god, I'm going to kill you."

Dhayun leaned on the table, resting her chin in her palm. "Aw, you're so dramatic, Woonie."

"Don't call me that..."

"Ehhh, why?"

"It feels weird."

"Now that I think of it, you haven't call me Noona. Call me Noona."

"No."

"Come on..."

"No."

"Please."

"No."

"Fuck you."

-_- The three women across the table stared at her blanky.

After finishing their meals, Elena, Eira, and Calistra excused themselves, heading back toward their classrooms, leaving Brandon alone with Dhayun.

As they walked through the academy hallways, the late afternoon light filtered through the large, arched windows, casting long, golden streaks along the polished floors.

Students moved past them, some still throwing occasional glances at the pair.

Dhayun didn't seem to care and turned her head slightly as her eyes flickering over him before she finally spoke.

"How's it going in the academy? It must be strange for you..."

Brandon exhaled and shoved his hands into his pockets as he nodded. "Mhm... It's weird, but I think I'll get used to it soon."

It only has been a few days since he found himself thrown into this whole mess.

It was overwhelming at first, but he was slowly starting to adapt.

The training is a pain, the stares were constant, and the expectations placed on him were ridiculously high... but somehow, he was pushing through.

Dhayun let out a small chuckle and a fond look crossed her face "You know, I was seriously shocked when I saw you in the training today. Like, I thought I was hallucinating or something."

Brandon gave her a sidelong glance "You recognized me instantly?"

She scoffed "Of course. How could I not? I mean, sure, you look a little different now... taller, stronger, not as scrawny as before..."

She smirked, eyeing him up and down. "...But you still have that same grumpy-ass expression. Like the whole world annoys you."

Her expression softened as she continued "Honestly though... I never expected to see you here. After everything, I figured you'd be living a normal life somewhere, not throwing yourself into this kind of insanity."

Brandon fell silent for a moment, his gaze drifting to the side as they walked past a group of students.

He hadn't exactly planned for any of this either.

Just a few days ago, he was an ordinary college student... but now?

"...Yeah, well. Life doesn't always go the way we expect it to."

"Mhm, that's true."
