Ghost Exorciser: The Oust Fake Heiress Strikes-Chapter 299: Truth Talismans
His family’s faces flashed through his mind.
Before he could act, a sudden force surged around the vehicle.
The air pressure shifted violently.
Psychic superhumans intervened, using their abilities to halt the car mid-motion.
The tires screamed against the asphalt, the scent of burning rubber filling the air.
The driver fought the wheel desperately, his knuckles white, but despair quickly replaced resistance.
’There’s no escape.’
He remembered his master’s words.
Slowly, he closed his eyes.
When he opened them again, ruthlessness burned within.
He reached into the compartment, grabbed a knife, and burst out of the car without hesitation.
He advanced toward the police, blade glinting under the harsh lights.
The psychic superhumans reacted instantly, unleashing their power to restrain him.
He thrashed wildly, screaming as he struggled.
"I kidnapped them!" he shouted hysterically. "I did it all!"
The officers froze.
"These children belong to wealthy families," he continued, his voice cracking. "I told those families to come here. I’ll take the money and let the children go!"
If Monica’s subordinates hadn’t known better, they might have believed it was a simple case of greed, a desperate driver committing an unforgivable crime for money. 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺
All of them gazed at the driver with a trace of pity, though no one stepped forward. The air smelled faintly of burnt rubber and dust, heavy with tension.
This stalemate dragged on for nearly twenty minutes before Monica and Lana finally arrived at the scene.
Monica barely spared the driver a glance. Her attention moved past him as if he no longer existed.
Lana, however, rushed straight toward the truck. Her heart thudded violently as she checked the children one by one.
Their small bodies were limp, breaths shallow but steady.
After confirming that they were only unconscious, she finally exhaled, the breath she had been holding for far too long escaping her chest.
’I’m not a doctor,’ she thought uneasily. ’What if I missed something?’
Thankfully, Mr. Crow and several healers arrived soon after. After examining the children carefully, they reassured her.
"They’re unharmed," one of them confirmed. "They were sedated, nothing more."
Hearing that, Lana’s knees nearly gave out in relief.
Her mind drifted briefly to her previous life... the sight of these same children lying on cold tables, their bodies ravaged, barely clinging to life after their organs had been harvested.
’This time... they’re truly safe.’
She drew a deep breath and turned toward Monica, who had already finished her preliminary investigation of the driver.
Earlier, while they were still in the car, Monica had been unusually tense. The hum of the engine and the flashing streetlights reflected in her eyes as Lana finally broke the silence.
"What’s bothering you?"
Monica released a long sigh.
"Even if we corner him and prevent a catastrophe," she said quietly, "he’ll act as a scapegoat. He’ll confess to everything and protect the real mastermind. And once that happens, the real enemy slips away, and I gain someone far more dangerous."
Her fingers tightened around the steering wheel.
"If only there was a way to make him reveal the truth on his own."
Hearing that, Lana narrowed her eyes.
She remembered Axel.
She remembered the truth talismans.
They were among the talismans she hadn’t fully unlocked yet, and she had only three in her possession. Axel had given them to her with a grave expression.
"In case you ever need real help," he had told her, "these will force the truth out of anyone."
After a moment’s hesitation, Lana reached into her pocket, drew out a talisman, and handed it to Monica.
Monica stared at it, confused. The markings etched onto the paper were written in an ancient script that no modern human could decipher. She lifted her gaze toward Lana questioningly.
Lana sighed.
"As long as you attach this talisman to someone," she explained, "they won’t be able to lie. The truth will flow out of them like water. Once you record their confession, it can be presented directly in court."
Monica’s eyes narrowed in shock, then lit up with undisguised excitement.
"Can you make more of these?"
Lana shook her head immediately.
"Not yet. I haven’t mastered truth talismans. This is all I have for now. Once I learn how to make them properly, I’ll supply you."
Monica exhaled slowly, then nodded, gratitude evident in her eyes.
She couldn’t help comparing Lana to other talisman practitioners, people who demanded endless conditions and still refused to guarantee supply.
Lana, on the other hand, was proactive, often handing over newly developed talismans without hesitation.
After a moment, Monica asked thoughtfully, "What about teleportation talismans?"
Lana shook her head again.
"That’s another one I haven’t learned yet."
Her expression was honest, almost apologetic.
"I’ve unlocked many talismans," she continued, "but teleportation isn’t among them."
Monica frowned. "Unlocked?"
Lana smiled lightly.
"My master uses a level system," she explained. "Once I complete certain talisman types, more become available to me."
As the words left her mouth, Lana cursed inwardly.
’I shouldn’t have said that... Monica doesn’t know about the talisman pagoda.’
Before she could dwell on it further, they arrived at the scene.
The memory of that conversation faded as Lana blinked and looked toward Monica, who had already used the truth talisman. The confession had been recorded cleanly, without resistance.
This case was effectively over.
Though it had been a near disaster, Monica had gained tremendously from it.
After a week of investigations and paperwork, she submitted the results.
The promised reward arrived... not in full, but enough to matter.
More importantly, from that point onward, Monica could act directly under the government’s name.
Her private force was now officially associated with government officers, forcing other private agencies to think twice before crossing her.
Monica was thrilled.
She quickly established connections with several high-ranking officials in Xila City.
High-level assignments began coming in one after another. As long as she completed them successfully, she would soon become one of the most influential and rapidly rising private enforcement units.
Lana’s reaction, however, was entirely different.
When she learned that the government had deliberately reduced the promised rewards, fury burned in her chest.
’Cunning old foxes,’ she thought coldly.
