Chapter 48: Chapter 48: Riley

It was an elite university affordable only to a few. Connections made here could raise a person’s status forever.

The handful of scholarship students accepted was the talent the wealthy might be interested in investing in.

On the surface, the university may seem like others, but the number of talents it has raised... couldn’t be counted in numbers.

And the terrifying connections it had...

In her previous life, Lana mainly didn’t leave the Almond family because of this university. It was an olive branch she needed desperately.

Yet... it became the very reason for her downfall later.

Shaking off the bad memories, Lana was about to enter when a guard stopped her.

"You are not allowed to enter?"

Was Lana surprised? Meh!

The guard was an old one and had seen Lana entering the university for the past 2 years, so why would he stop her suddenly?

Only because he might have received the instructions.

"Eh? May I ask why?" Lana feigned curiosity, while the passerby hardly paid any attention to Lana. Only a few gossipy ones stopped and stared at Lana and the guard as if they were waiting for a good show.

The guard showed a respectful expression. He knew that, though others had ordered him to humiliate Lana, he couldn’t just blindly insult her.

The principal had made a strict rule about how, even if other parents or rich students try to pressure the staff or teacher into mistreating a student, they must maintain decorum.

No matter how low a student’s status was, open disrespect could lead to instant dismissal.

The guard bowed slightly and said in a careful tone, "Miss Lana, I... I was just instructed not to allow your entry until the vice principal reviews your case."

"My case?" Lana tilted her head, her tone dripping with polite confusion. "That’s strange. I wasn’t aware I had committed a crime."

The guard frowned, yet he conveyed the message, "The Almond Family had announced that you aren’t related to them, and before you pay university fees, you aren’t allowed in."

"Ah? It’s alright. I have the fees." Lana gave a bright smile.

This time, the guard was befuddled.

The fees for one semester at Shadowridge University were $10 million. On the surface, it seems like a lot, but the reality was that the resources provided here couldn’t even be bought with money.

The Almond family was able to afford it because they doted on Lana, but now... Lana has fallen out of favor, so it doesn’t make sense that she still has the money to pay for the tuition fees.

"Oh... she is bluffing." Someone from the crowd yelled, and Lana arched a brow.

Riley.

Brenda’s best friend... scratch that... Brenda’s lapdog. She loved to cause trouble for Lana. It was her favorite pastime.

In the last life, after Lana was accused of plagiarism, Riley was the first to publicly mock her, whispering rumors in every corner of the campus.

Riley now stood among the small crowd, her glossy curls bouncing as she sneered.

"Tuition? What tuition? Everyone knows the Almonds dropped you. How can you suddenly pay $10 million?"

A few of her friends snickered, egging her on.

Lana’s black-lensed eyes narrowed slightly, but the smile on her face remained calm, almost serene.

"Oh, Riley... You really haven’t changed. Still obsessed with my life, I see."

Riley stepped closer, voice dripping with false sweetness. "Obsessed? I’m just... concerned. You know, for your reputation."

Lana tilted her head, letting a small, cold laugh escape. "Concerned, huh? Then tell me how you are going to contribute to my tuition."

"Why should I pay? Do you mistake me for your sugar daddy or what? Or... let me... are you high on drugs or something?" Riley counterattacked; a mocking smirk played on her lips.

"Eh? Well, sadly, no. And since you aren’t concerned enough to pay for my tuition, stay out of this matter. Also, I don’t need my dad to hide the century-wide scandal of getting high on drugs and almost getting caught with a male model who was possessed. It must have been thrilling to sleep with a possessed man!" Lana crackled with laughter.

Riley froze, her face drained of color, and her mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. A few of her friends gasped, clutching their chests as though Lana’s words had physically struck them.

"What do you mean?" Riley tried her best to retort, but her mind turned blank.

In her heart, she kept on thinking, ’How did she know... how did she know about my black history!’

"Oh dear, did I say something wrong?" She asked innocently, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear as she stepped closer. Her black lenses hid the glimmer of amusement in her sapphire eyes.

"I mean exactly what I say. You must have been too high on the drugs; otherwise, how can you ignore the most common sign?"

Riley’s face turned an ugly shade of red. "Y-You’re lying! You have no proof!"

"Proof?" Lana tilted her head, her smile widening. "Oh, I don’t need proof. But the expression on your face right now... that’s better than evidence."

A murmur spread across the crowd, and the gossipy nature of the students was ignited.

"What wild news. Riley... is truly adventurous."

"So she sleeps with male models, huh? Isn’t she afraid of contracting some kind of sexually transmitted disease?"

"Shut up!" Riley was riled up; her eyes were spitting fire as she glared at Lana. "Just you wait! You will regret your words."

With that, she stormed off; her escape couldn’t be any faster.

"That was a good one. She could only leave an empty threat and leave." Mr. Crow crackled, but Lana’s expression turned grim.

"It wasn’t an empty threat," Lana muttered, her eyes fixed on the shrinking figure of Riley. "She will go to great lengths to prove the truth of her threat. After all, she is a member of the Student Union."

"So what will you do then?"
