Chapter 285: Memory Vessel

The garden path curved deeper than Enya remembered.

Her mother walked ahead, one hand trailing along a vine-covered white stone arch, the other holding the brim of her straw hat as they passed under low-hanging branches. Enya followed close, skipping over roots that twisted through the pale rocks like they’d grown there on purpose.

"Where are we going?" Enya asked, excitement bubbling up again.

Her mother glanced back with a small smile. "You’ll see."

Enya tried to guess. Maybe a new section she’d planted. Maybe a pond with those fish that glowed at night. Maybe-

Her mother stopped.

Enya almost bumped into her. "Mom?"

They stood at the edge of a clearing Enya didn’t recognize.

That alone felt strange. She’d been here so many times. She knew the paths. She knew the turns. But this section looked... new. The flowers here were different - quieter, somehow. Less vibrant, more personal. Their colors felt muted, like someone painted them with water instead of ink.

And in the center of the clearing, standing alone, was a single flower.

Enya’s breath caught.

It was huge. Easily as tall as her chest if she stood beside it. The petals were closed tight, layered over each other in a perfect spiral, and they gleamed like a polished pearl under the sunlight. White, but not plain white. There was something faintly iridescent about them, like oil on water, shifting between pale gold and soft blue depending on the angle.

The stem was thick and smooth, pale green, and it held the massive bloom upright without bending. No leaves. No smaller buds beside it.

Just the one flower.

Alone.

Enya stepped closer, almost on instinct. "What... is this?"

Her mother didn’t answer right away. She moved to stand beside the flower, one hand hovering over the closed petals like she wanted to touch but wasn’t sure if she should.

"I wanted to show you" her mother said quietly.

Enya frowned. "I’ve never seen this here before."

Her mother’s smile turned a little more excited. "I know."

Before Enya could ask what that meant, her mother lifted her hand.

A single flick of her fingers. The white petals moved. Slowly, deliberately, like the flower had been waiting for permission this entire time. The outermost petal loosened first, peeling back with a faint rustling sound. Then the next. Then the next.

Enya watched, mesmerized, as the bloom opened layer by layer.

The sunlight caught the inside of the petals, and Enya realized they weren’t just white. They had veins of pale gold running through them, thin as thread, branching outward like tiny rivers.

The petals spread wider. Wider.

And then Enya saw what was inside. 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦

A black lotus.

Small. Delicate. Sitting in the center of the massive white bloom like a secret someone kept hidden.

Black petals, folded inward.

White tendrils curling between them.

And at the very center - a soft, golden glow.

Enya’s heart stopped.

She knew this flower.

She made this flower.

Her hands went numb. Her throat tightened. For a second, she couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think, couldn’t do anything except stare.

"Wait..." Enya whispered.

Her mother turned, tilting her head. "Hm? What’s wrong?"

Enya’s voice came out shaky. "I... I know this flower."

Her mother blinked in confusion. "You do?"

Enya nodded, still staring. "I made one. For Raizen."

Her mother’s expression changed. Complete surprise.

Real, genuine surprise.

"You made this?" her mother asked slowly.

Enya nodded harder. "Yes. He asked me for a flower. A special one. And I just... I didn’t even think about it. This one just came to me. I didn’t know how I knew, but I knew."

Her mother’s hand lowered. She stared at the black lotus, then at Enya, then back at the flower.

"How..." her mother started, then stopped. Her brows knit together. "Enya, I’ve never taught you this."

"I know" Enya said quickly. "I didn’t learn it from you, like most stuff. It just... appeared in my head. Like someone put it there."

Her mother’s face went very still. For a long moment, neither of them spoke. The garden felt quieter now. Even the breeze seemed to hold its breath.

Enya stepped closer, eyes locked on the black lotus. "Mom... But how do you know about it? Or did it just come to you randomly?"

Her mother exhaled slowly, like she’d been holding something in. Then she knelt beside the white flower, one hand resting on the stem.

"I had a dream" she said softly.

Enya crouched down beside her. "A dream?"

Her mother nodded. "A... A really strange one."

Enya waited.

Her mother’s gaze stayed on the black lotus, like she was seeing something else. Something far away.

"It felt... heavy" her mother said. "Not bad, like a nightmare. Just... important. Like it wasn’t mine."

Enya frowned. "What do you mean?"

Her mother’s fingers traced the edge of a white petal. "It felt like someone was showing me. Like they wanted me to see this flower. To understand it."

Enya’s chest tightened. "Who?"

Her mother shook her head. "I don’t know. I couldn’t see them. I just... Felt something was off."

Enya leaned closer, voice dropping. "What did they show you?"

Her mother’s smile returned, but it was fragile now. Uncertain.

"This" she said, gesturing to the black lotus. "Every detail. The petals. The golden center. I woke up and I could still see it. Like it was burned into my mind."

Enya stared at her mother’s face. She’d never seen her look like this before. Not scared, but... unsettled.

"And now you’re telling me" her mother continued quietly, "that you made one. Without knowing. Without anyone teaching you."

Enya nodded slowly.

Her mother looked at her for a long moment. Then she reached out and cupped Enya’s face gently.

"Do you understand what that means?" her mother asked.

Enya shook her head.

Her mother’s thumb brushed her cheek. "It means something connected us to this flower. Both of us. At the same time."

Enya’s heart beat faster. "But... Why?"

Her mother looked back at the black lotus. The sunlight caught the golden center, making it glow brighter.

"I don’t know" her mother admitted. "But I know it matters."

Enya swallowed. Her voice came out small. "What is it, though? It’s just a flower, right?"

Her mother was quiet for a long time.

Then she stood, still looking at the black lotus.

When she spoke, her voice was barely above a whisper. Reverent. Almost afraid.

"No, darling."

She reached out and touched the black lotus with one finger. The petals didn’t move. The golden center pulsed once, soft.

Her mother’s eyes reflected its glow.

"It’s like..."

Enya held her breath.

"...a memory vessel."
