Chapter 60: Cecilia’s identity

Everyone turned around to see Amy in a striking black dress with pearl earrings, walking toward them while exuding a graceful charm.

Amy looked at Elena, a bit surprised.

"Mrs. Mitchell? Why are you here?"

She was just feeling irritated from waiting in line. She was planning to see what was happening up front, only to find Elena and James in an awkward situation.

Seeing Amy, the doorman gave a flattering smile.

"Miss Lawrence, you’re here. Please come in."

The Lawrence family was one of the hosts of the banquet. After Marianne’s recovery, Amy no longer stayed low-key, so the staff naturally recognized her.

Elena thought for a moment and spoke to Amy.

"Amy, this banquet is very important for your Uncle James and me. Can you take us in?"

Amy looked troubled; she didn’t want to go against the Warner family.

Cecilia stepped in quickly.

"Great-aunt, I’ll take you in."

Elena was delighted.

"Cecilia, you’re here, too?"

Amy glanced at Cecilia, frowning.

‘Why is it her again?’

Thinking this, Amy subconsciously looked toward the corner.

Steven was in the corner, observing the scene.

He had arrived earlier, but he figured he would just wait since he would get surrounded if he went in too early.

However, he did not expect to see Cecilia there.

He began to question her identity again. This banquet wasn’t an event that just anyone could attend.

As one of the hosts, he knew exactly how many invitations were sent and to whom.

Everyone with a confirmed invitation had already checked in, except for one person... Riane.

He looked at Cecilia, a smile forming on his face involuntarily.

Riane.

Amy thought for a moment. After all, Cecilia was Steven‘s friend, and she played a big role in saving Marianne. Thus, she said, "Miss Morrison, you need an invitation to enter the banquet. It’s not for everyone."

Elena looked disappointed, shaking her head at Cecilia.

For some reason, Amy felt slightly better when seeing Cecilia falter.

‘So what if she could cure Grandma? She’s still not part of the elites, right?’

With her conceit satisfied, she looked at Elena and James with a hint of smugness in her tone.

"Mrs. Mitchell, how about this? You wait by the back door. The Lawrence family is one of the hosts. When the time is right, I’ll open the door for you to sneak in."

Having lived all their lives with dignity, Elena and James had never done anything sneaky.

This was a blatant humiliation toward them.

Their eyes darkened.

"No need."

Ready to leave, Cecilia stopped them as she handed over an invitation to the staff.

"Is this the invitation you’re looking for?"

Luckily, she had not tossed it somewhere and was able to find it among her other stuff.

The staff verified it with some skepticism. However, it really was their invitation.

Amy stared in disbelief, taking the invitation and examining it several times before finally accepting that Cecilia truly had one.

She was surprised by her true identity.

"Who are you? Could it be that you bought this?"

Cecilia shrugged indifferently.

"Someone did offer to buy it, but I had too many invitations on me, and I wasn’t short on cash. I really can’t be bothered to sell them. Now, can we go in?"

The staff quickly nodded, stepping aside to let them through as they realized they had almost offended someone important.

Seeing Cecilia enter the banquet hall, Steven followed suit.

Inside the hall, most guests had already arrived.

Cecilia was looking around for Lay while holding a piece of cake.

Rumor had it that he was a bald, bespectacled, and chubby old man. Could that be him?

She hesitated a moment before walking straight to a bald man.

"Hello."

The old man turned, quickly swallowing his drink the moment he saw her stunning face.

"Hello. May I... help you with... something?"

Cecilia froze; wasn’t he a renowned lawyer? How come he was stuttering in real life?

Amused, she found it increasingly funny—a top-tier lawyer being a stutterer in real life was hilariously ironic!

Nearby, Steven’s eyes never left Cecilia as he saw her smiling widely at the old man.

He felt a twinge of jealousy.

"Why... are you laughing?" The old man was puzzled.

"No, I just didn’t expect the famous Mr. Lay to be..." She began.

The old man looked at her, confused.

"Lay? I... am not..."

‘What? Not Lay?’

She got it wrong!

Embarrassed, Cecilia apologized and retreated to the corner just as Steven approached her.

"Miss Morrison."

She turned to see him, nodding in acknowledgment.

Before he could continue, her phone rang.

She waved him off, answering the call.

It was Emma.

The hall was too noisy, so she couldn’t hear clearly. Thus, she put the call on speaker and held her phone in front of her face.

Just then, Emma’s crisp voice rang out.

"Mommy, I miss you! Don’t forget to bring me home a cupcake~"

‘Such a little foodie.’

Cecilia smiled helplessly.

"Got it."

Steven, hearing Emma’s voice, found it familiar.

Cupcake. Especially those words.

This voice seemed like...

Just as he was about to recall, Cecilia’s call ended.

He glanced to the side, spotting her phone’s wallpaper.

On it was a picture of her holding little Emma!
