Chapter 143: The Purchase and the Traps

With the matter of Terrence finally settled, the group moved on...

The man was sent away after surrendering all his resources, his Survivor Medals, and even the unused Arm Replacement Implant. If he ever came back for revenge, Marissa’s "curse" would ensure they knew the moment he got close.

Kai, however, wasn’t dwelling on Terrence anymore.

He knew that even if the man tried coming back, he believed he would no longer be concerned about Hypnotism.

After all, he was already getting closer to activating the Sentinels hidden in his base. With the circuit board and other components he would eventually acquire, he was confident he’d be able to control those androids. If that happened, their shelter’s defenses would rise to a whole new level.

For now, though, everyone focused on spending their Survivor Medals. The Gene Trader’s system and wares were laid out, and the survivors crowded around.

Those with enough medals purchased Gene Enhancement Serums, Gene Weapons, and Gene Skill Crystals.

Those with fewer medals settled for cheaper versions...

Of course, many of them also spent their Experience Points on some devices that could be useful... They bought a digital camera, a pack of cigarettes, a wristwatch, shampoo, and other everyday items.

It was quite interesting, but they had to make sure not to get blinded by how cheap they were.

After all, they were spending precious Experience Points!

The Experience Points that the Gene Trader takes might be low at the start, but they could lose track of their expenses and perhaps level down in the process if they weren’t being mindful.

"Finally... I can get an Alpha Gene! I don’t have to share with anyone anymore."

"Gene Skill Crystal... Please give me something awesome."

"I’m never good at gacha games, but I hope this Gene Skill will be an Active one."

Marissa, Ralph, and Victor couldn’t help but express their emotions right now.

As a matter of fact, all the Foreign Survivors, Wallace, Jonas, Aurora, and the others, were all delighted with their transactions, and soon, they completed their purchases.

Once the trading was done, Kai gathered them again. "Alright. Time to prepare the trap."

Everyone was already familiar with this.

The plan was simple but dangerous... lure in a swarm of Mutants, then slaughter them for Experience Points.

Just like that, the group worked tirelessly to set up defenses:

Wooden and metal pikes were planted in rows to impale charging enemies.

Trip wires were strung between trees, ready to trip and slow their advance.

Pitfalls were dug and covered, waiting to swallow the careless mutants.

Still, they decided to make a fire pit... After all, even if the mutants were resistant to fire, they were not immune to it.

It was a deadly lure that could roast dozens at once if they were herded correctly. However, since there were too many dried leaves and branches everywhere, they had to be careful using the fire pit. Perhaps, if they truly had no other option, that would be the only time to light it up.

They didn’t want to trigger any forest fire after all.

After a few hours of work, sweat poured down their faces. However, the preparations were thorough.

Once everything was done, they were already hungry!

With that in mind, they had their lunch together as they cooked some instant noodles from the cooking utensils they bought from the Gene Trader...

It was a quick break, so after everything was settled, Kai gave the final order. "Trigger the trap!"

One of the locals stepped forward, chosen for the task.

He entered the Gene Trader’s treehouse carefully, and the moment he did, the atmosphere changed...

From the shadows, the Mutants appeared.

They came from everywhere! Some started crawling out of the ground, slithering from behind ruined buildings, bursting from the sewers and canals of the old town. 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮

Dozens of them started searching for the enemies!

"Here they come! Just stay together as planned!" Kai reminded.

The survivors nodded as they tightened their grips on their weapons...

There were only about twenty of them, and the Mutants kept coming. However, none of them are worried... They were all excited since they’d be getting Experience Points!

"Alright! Everyone, make use of the traps! Don’t charge forward!"

The battle for Experience Points had begun.

***

The first wave of Mutants rushed in, and as expected, they were dumb enough to impale themselves on their traps!

Of course, they have high vitality and didn’t die easily, but as they got pushed deeper by the mutants behind them, they would be an easy kill later!

After the traps they set held the advancing mutants, revolvers were used!

Six shots were fired by each survivor... It wouldn’t be surprising if they were attracted from other Survivors or even A.I. Soldiers, but that didn’t matter at this point!

Several Mutants collapsed, their bodies pierced by bullets, but more kept coming.

"Ohhh! The experience points are coming!"

"Kill them all!"

"Hahaha! A head shot! I got lucky!"

As their revolvers clicked empty, some started reloading while the others switched to their blades.

Indeed, reloading wasn’t quick. Only Ralph and a handful of skilled shooters managed to keep firing accurately after their first six rounds.

The rest had no choice but to wait behind the barricades, gripping blades, crudely made spears, and hatchets.

Thud! Thud! Thud!

"Graahh!"

The wooden and metal pikes proved their worth immediately. Mutants continued impaling themselves as they charged... Others stumbled into trip wires, tumbling into pitfalls where sharpened stakes awaited them!

"Alright! Just switch with your blades!"

Aurora heard Kai’s instructions. She gritted her teeth as she looked at the ugly mutants. It was hard looking at their faces uglier than Zombies!

However, for the sake of gaining experience points, she had to do this!

She swung her blade fast, slicing through the neck of a mutant that had climbed over the barricade of pikes and mutant bodies...

Jonas thrust his crude spear forward, skewering another through the chest.

Meanwhile, Victor hacked wildly with his sword, "Die!"

Though he was a mechanic, his strength was already high after reaching level 14!

Everything was going well!

However, as they killed more than 60 of these mutants, they heard a buzzing sound in the air!

Kai immediately saw it!

"Above us!"
