Chapter 85: Something Wrong

The ground outside the New Haven-45 trembled as the five Augmented Humans pushed their assault.

Kai could barely follow their movements despite having a Level 3 Keen Senses.

Still, he was able to see blades of energy carving through the Ascendant’s armor. Then, there were shockwaves booming across the land, and explosions would even light the sky from time to time.

Yet the Ascendant Unit was still functioning!

Its black alloy body absorbed blow after blow!

With a single sweep of its arm, it unleashed a beam that vaporized everything in its path. Thankfully, the Ascendant Units targeted the opposite side of their shelter instead.

"Shit... They’re dying!"

"Oh no!"

"They’ve messed up. They should’ve just escaped."

Apparently, one Augmented Human was caught mid-leap. The blast tore through his chest, and he fell lifeless to the ground!

Despite being higher level and perhaps consuming more types of Gene Enhancement Serums, their flesh was still incapable of blocking such advanced weapons!

"Damn it!" Santiago shouted, gripping the window frame as the merchants watched in horror. They knew very well that if the Augmented Humans died, they could be next!

Still, the remaining four fought harder. They were filled with rage after seeing one of them perish.

But the Ascendant Unit was one of the strongest Mech Soldiers of the Anima Civilization for a reason.

Soon, a second warrior was crushed beneath its foot, his body shattered instantly after barely destroying a part of its leg. Thankfully, he at least managed to hold the Ascendant’s leg tightly and made the unit incapable of moving!

"Die!"

Another one tried to use this chance to eliminate the enemy with a glowing spear, to ensure that the sacrifice of the two wouldn’t be in vain... but the Ascendant’s claws suddenly ripped through him!

It happened so quickly!

Kai’s group stood frozen...

Three Augmented Humans, legends among survivors, had fallen in mere minutes.

But the last two ignored the deaths of their companions as they knew that the enemy unit was already badly damaged!

"Haaa!"

Their bodies were filled with spirit energy, and they launched a coordinated strike. One distracted the Ascendant with endless sword strikes, while the other drove a blade deep into its core.

Boom!

The Ascendant tried to remove the blade but it was already too late!

Sparks erupted from its chest, and in a few moments, it collapsed, shaking the earth as its frame crashed into the ruins.

Silence followed, broken only by the crackle of burning debris.

Kai’s eyes widened. They... they actually defeated it.

The two surviving Augmented Humans stood over the wreckage, their faces looked grim. They probably didn’t expect to suffer so much from that battle against a single Ascendant Unit. Still, they salvaged the Ascendant’s weapons and cores... but to Kai’s surprise, they left the rest of its body untouched.

"They’re not taking the parts?" Victor also muttered in disbelief.

Diego nodded as he rubbed his palms. This was an opportunity! 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮

"They only take what they need..."

Then, it was at this point that the two Augmented Humans glanced toward New Haven‑45. For a moment, their eyes locked with Kai’s group. Then, without a word, they lifted the bodies of their fallen comrades and vanished into the horizon, leaving the battlefield littered with Ascendant remains.

Kai’s heart pounded. This is our chance.

"Move!" he shouted. "Gather a team. We’re taking those parts before anyone else does!"

The survivors sprang into action... Wallace and Jonas led their team, while Victor waited patiently, preparing his tools. After all, he knew very well that he’d be the one working on it... He was already eager to dismantle the Ascendant’s frame!

The merchants, however, were less pleased. Diego clenched his teeth to suppress his jealousy while Santiago clenched his fist... They wanted the parts too, but this was Kai’s territory. They could only watch as his people claimed the spoils.

Kai had no idea how this loot could change his shelter, but he would welcome any changes that it could bring to his shelter!

***

It didn’t take that long before the team that had gone to recover the Ascendant’s remains finally returned.

Their carts were loaded with scavenged armor plating, fractured weapon fragments, and shards of black alloy.

Victor’s eyes gleamed as he inspected the haul, already imagining how to repurpose the materials.

Then, with the loot secured, Kai wasn’t in a hurry as he turned back to the traders, so they could already leave...

Transactions were completed quickly. He didn’t purchase any serums from Diego and Santiago, but he traded rolls of fabric and other supplies for practical goods aside from the Portable Signal Jammer that he negotiated earlier.

Still, not everyone followed Kai’s restraint. Claire, who had three Survivor Medals, and Wallace, who had two, decided to pool their resources. Together, they purchased the Emerald Gene Enhancement Serum. It was agreed Wallace would consume it first, strengthening his bones and muscles to better protect the shelter. Next time, Claire would have priority.

Terrence and Jonas did the same as they combined their Survivor’s Medals to get the serum they wanted.

Of course, the two traders tried purchasing the remnants of the Ascendant Unit from them...

They actually offered a half-filled vial of Alpha Gene Enhancement Serum plus some items in their current pack.

They really wanted the Ascendant materials that Wallace had recovered outside. But Kai refused firmly, thanking them for their trade before making it clear the wreckage belonged to New Haven‑45.

Diego’s smile faded, and Santiago could only stare at the room where they were keeping the body.

At last, with no more business to conduct, the two of them and their escorts could only leave the place... They still had many other shelters they had to visit.

Just like that, their white flags fluttered briefly in the wind before disappearing into the horizon.

Soon, Kai joined Victor and the others who were already tearing apart the remains of the Ascendant Unit.

In just a few hours, Victor was able to dismantle everything, even with his simple tools. His Mechanic Talent was certainly the real deal.

"This black alloy is awesome... We can probably use these parts to make some swords or blades." Victor muttered as he could tell how tough they were.

Then, as he looked behind to hear Kai’s opinion, he suddenly noticed that Atom was walking towards him, or perhaps, towards the remains of the Ascendant!

’What?! Did I do something wrong?’
