God of Technology: Creating the Internet in Another World-Chapter 366: These Roads Are Kinda Ridiculous!
The scheduled time arrived.
The convoy officially set off from Roster territory.
Just looking at the convoy—vehicles of all different shapes and sizes, carrying different numbers of people and cargo—was enough to grab tons of attention. But that wasn’t even the main point. What really caught people’s eyes was that Roster territory actually had this super wide road.
How wide, you ask? This road could fit at least eight magic-powered vehicles traveling side by side.
Why "at least"?
Because the Roster folks had painted nice, neat lanes on the road, and each lane could actually fit more than just one magic-powered vehicle—looked like about one and a half vehicles worth of space.
If you thought about it for a second, you’d get why they did it that way.
Obviously they were worried that if vehicles were driving side by side or trying to pass each other, they might crash.
But now, by making each lane wider, they didn’t have to worry about that.
On top of that, you could see arrows painted on these lanes—half pointing forward, half pointing backward. Clearly this was to keep vehicles going in different directions on different lanes, so you wouldn’t have to worry about head-on collisions.
The livestream viewers watching these roads were kinda dumbfounded.
"Why would you build such a wide road?"
"My territory’s been building roads recently too, but the width is only about a third of this. And even so, the cost is already super high."
"Isn’t this a bit much? Feels like they built it way too wide—what a waste. With that kind of money, wouldn’t it be better to make the roads longer?"
"If this were anywhere else, maybe this road would be wide. But have you guys thought about the fact that this is Roster territory? Every day, who knows how many minerals and raw materials need to be transported in, and who knows how many finished goods need to be shipped out. In that situation, maybe only roads this thick can actually meet the demand!"
"No matter how many vehicles there are, can’t they just line up? It’s not like it’s gonna cause a traffic jam, right? But honestly, there are some things worth copying here. If I also build roads like this and divide them into lanes with directions marked, it’d probably work way better."
"Places that have already started magic-tech industrialization are definitely more suited for this kind of transportation."
"Actually, I think this is more like Viscount Roster showing us an example, telling us that future roads can be built this way."
"..."
The livestream viewers were stunned for a moment, and lots of people couldn’t help but comment. These roads were just a bit too advanced.
Quite a few lords were tempted, thinking their own territories could build roads like this too.
But pretty much everyone thought the roads were too wide—honestly kind of wasteful.
Roster saw these bullet comments and the corner of his mouth curved up slightly. "I bet some people can understand the point of doing it this way. As magic-powered vehicles become more common, the vehicles on the road won’t be like the old horse carts and ox carts anymore. New-style roads are super important."
"Though I guess for some regular territories, this does seem kinda excessive."
"Whatever, let them figure it out themselves. They can handle their own territorial roads. In the future, the kingdom just needs to make sure the main roads are built properly. Other areas can figure it out on their own. Anyway, good infrastructure is the foundation of prosperity—and you gotta build them right."
In just those few muttered sentences, the convoy finished organizing and started driving out of the territory.
The person in charge of the livestream was sitting in the first vehicle.
Compared to the cars from Ren’s previous life, the magic-powered vehicles in this world were still pretty basic. A lot of features were missing, but the fundamental functions worked fine. Even the seats had floating runes added to them, so when the vehicle bounced around, people’s butts wouldn’t hurt too much.
There were also constant-temperature runes to keep the temperature inside the vehicle stable.
Why add what seemed like fancy, unnecessary stuff? Simple reason: during testing, the guys at the research institute all knew magic, and whenever something felt uncomfortable, they’d just add more features.
Vehicle bouncing around making your butt hurt? Add a floating rune.
As for the cost... was that really something they needed to worry about?
Their job was just to research and manufacture a magic-powered vehicle that matched their aesthetic and was super comfortable to ride in.
As for when they sell it later, if customers want the extras, they can pay more. The rune factories can produce them anyway—what’s that got to do with the researchers?
After some warm-up, the person in charge of the livestream finally got everything ready and ordered the lead vehicle to drive out.
With just a slight shake, the vehicle started moving forward.
This was the first time the livestream audience was seeing things from the passenger seat perspective as the vehicle moved forward.
The buildings and trees on both sides of the road started moving backward continuously. The vehicle drove super smoothly.
"Anyone who’s ridden in horse carts a lot should know—when you look out the window, everything looks like it’s moving backward. Sometimes your eyes just like to trick you that way. But I bet you’ve never seen this kind of speed before, right?"
Filming everything around them for the livestream audience, the person in charge explained with a smile, "Of course, our magic-powered vehicles can only maintain this speed for now."
"I don’t mean the vehicle can only go this fast for a short time. What I mean is, once we leave Roster territory, the road conditions are gonna get way worse. It won’t be bad enough to send us flying over bumps and potholes, but it’ll definitely slow us down a bit."
"Right now though, let’s enjoy this incredible speed!"
As his voice trailed off, the driver next to him hit the gas and maxed out the vehicle’s speed.
Everyone could clearly see the livestream image shift backward slightly before returning to its original position.
What kind of speed was that?!
Of course, after the initial shock, he didn’t just leave it at that—he started explaining details about the vehicle as they drove. Things like speed, how much weight it could carry, and so on.
With the earlier introduction, a lot of people had a pretty good sense of what to expect, so listening to these details made everything way more concrete.
Actually, even after leaving Roster territory, the convoy’s speed didn’t drop much for quite a while.
That’s because pretty much all the nearby territories had some kind of partnership with Roster territory. Tons of goods were transported daily—whether it was minerals, cloth, or magic-tech machinery. While their roads weren’t built quite as perfectly as Roster’s, they were pretty close.
The ride stayed smooth.
Gray Fort Empire.
Capital city.
Royal palace.
The emperor of Gray Fort gazed at the Magic Net screen in front of him, his eyes flickering slightly, as if thinking about something.
