Chapter 124: 124: Why did this happen - Part 1

If the fight had been hard before, it was brutal now. Auriel felt like she could not breathe as she felt the devil’s assault increase in intensity.

All she could do at that moment was defend herself against the all-out assault that was raining down on her.

"Come on! Show me! Would you rather die than show me what you can do? I can grant that wish of yours as well."

The more Auriel tried to fight back, the more she felt like she was on the losing end.

Finally, Minerva decided that she’d had enough. The insults were getting to her, and her temper could only take so much of it.

"Ugh, you little—"

Minerva raised her staff, but before she could bring it down and end Auriel, she staggered. Her feet lost their balance, and she had to use her staff to steady herself.

Her hand immediately gripped her staff hard, but Auriel took that chance to push Minerva back and gain some ground.

"That bitch—! How dare she try and dominate me? I will show her... ugh..."

Minerva complained as the burning feeling inside her rose higher.

Auriel felt confused at first, but then she felt it—the subtle yet fresh feeling of divine energy clearing the land around her.

The butterfly sent by the Chief God fluttered its wings as it landed on Auriel’s neck, and the divine authority began to fill her from head to toe.

"You are... but why? I guess I will ask what happened later."

Auriel stood up straight with a slightly confused look on her face.

The main reason behind this was the fact that the Chief God chose to give Auriel a part of her authority to use divine power in this world instead of dealing with Minerva’s essence on her end.

Auriel could not think of many reasons behind this, but one reason she could think of sent chills down her spine.

"Don’t tell me... did something happen in the gods’ realm? Fuckkkk, I feel like I should head back and check. But I have a duty to do here, so I should take care of this first."

Auriel took a deep breath before she raised her weapon.

Her staff reflected the sun that was finally beginning to shine through the dark fog that covered the altar.

Whatever the Chief God had done, it had been enough to make Minerva stagger and take a step back.

"I’m sorry, but your time is over. Please, rest in the loving embrace of nature. I hope you do not have to suffer like you did."

Auriel spoke in a soft voice, but her staff shone as it came down hard and fast.

But just because she wanted to end things did not mean that the other side was ready to accept her declaration.

"You—! Don’t you dare... I won’t let you..."

Minerva raged as she brought her hands up to stop that staff. She had lost her staff already, but that did not deter her from trying to save herself.

Her hand managed to intercept Auriel’s, but the light changed its shape to become sharper, and that hand trying to stop the now staff-turned-sword was cleaved off cleanly.

"M-My arm! How dare you... ugh..."

Minerva yelled out in pain as the sword managed to stab her hard. The pain could be felt in her bones as she tried to hide her wound, but it was too late to conceal the evidence of what had happened.

Auriel took a deep breath as she steadied herself before she took a step toward the fallen goddess.

"Don’t come closer! I have lost. Is that what you wanted to hear from me? Then I will tell you—I lost, and you won! Are you happy now? No, stay away!"

Minerva yelled as she tried to back away at the same pace Auriel was walking toward her. But she soon ran into a wall and felt trapped.

"I refuse to go back! I will curse you if you touch me, Auriel! You should know how powerful I am, and my curse will ruin you. I will not—"

While the older goddess was still complaining, Auriel managed to close the distance between them and press her hand against Minerva’s shoulder.

"I understand your anger and your sorrow, Minerva. This freedom must be precious to you, even if you have been corrupted by it. But the Chief God and heaven have ruled against you. Unfortunately, this will be the end for you."

Auriel spoke, and her sword sank into Minerva’s abdomen.

Blood immediately flowed from the wound as Minerva reached down to check how much she had been hurt.

"Please, sleep and recover for now. Once you wake up again, you will feel much better. You will also be able to take your revenge against the darkness that made you like this."

Minerva’s form flickered, her once-divine presence now warped and twisted by the corruption that had consumed her.

As the sealing magic took hold, the dark goddess struggled against the binding force that sought to drag her back into confinement.

"You think this is over, Auriel? You may have sealed me away for now, but I will return. And when I do, I will make sure you suffer for this."

Minerva’s voice was sharp, filled with venom and lingering power. Her glowing red eyes locked onto the divine warrior standing before her.

Auriel remained firm, gripping her staff tightly as the divine light around her shimmered in response. Despite her exhaustion, she forced a small smile onto her lips.

"Try your luck again if you must, Minerva. But next time, I’ll be even stronger. And I will make sure there is no next time."

Minerva’s lips curled into a bitter smirk before her body began to dissolve into thick, black smoke. The air around her cracked with raw energy as she let out one last echoing laugh.

Then, as the last tendrils of her form vanished, only a suffocating darkness remained in her wake.
