Godfire: The Split Soul-Chapter 170: Born in Blood
Tears dripped from Kai’s eyes as he stretched his hands forward, then placed his palm on the forehead of Lena’s corpse.
Lena’s smiling face, her calm voice, and her loving nature lanced through Kai’s mind, causing him to dwell in tears.
Gusts of air dashed into the room through the broken window. Two of the winged creatures hovered for a second, then stepped into the room, the toes on their feet clicking against the ground.
’You can’t be dead. Lena. Tell me this is just a prank like you used to do.’ Thoughts reeled in Kai’s mind as he shook the chilled body.
As soon as the clicking sound lanced through Kai’s ears, his eyes caught a necklace falling from Lena’s arms.
’Lena’s necklace...’ Kai’s thoughts paused, neglecting the shadows and the snarling sounds echoing near him, then he reached out for the necklace.
With a deep inhale, Kai opened the love-shaped silver metal, then froze. "Lieutenant Gray!" His eyes rolled in their sockets as he locked his gaze on the small smiling face of the lieutenant at the left.
Then on the right, as his gaze shifted forcefully, he saw Lena’s welcoming eyes and caring smile. Bone-crackling sounds echoed around him as his grip on the necklace increased.
At that instant, the first winged creature sliced its claws toward the crying boy’s chest. Blood sprayed out from the boy’s chest as soon as the claw got buried in his skin.
Huge globs of blood escaped from Kai’s mouth as the creature raised him, the claws screeching across his inner skin.
His heartbeat began to change rhythm the moment the creature added its left limb, striking it into the boy’s left shoulder.
Memories of him and Lieutenant Gray, Lena, and every other person that had been good to him lanced through his mind.
Just the memory of burying his mother under the mango tree replaced the reeling faces. His blue and red eyes glowed, giving the room a purple glow.
Outside the mansion, three of the soldiers paused, their eyes widening. "Isn’t that where the kid went?" a guy with blood streaking his face turned a confused expression to the two soldiers beside him.
"I think that’s where he went. But what is that light? Let’s go check it out." The soldier with a blue bandage wrapped around his left shoulder moved a step forward.
The other two soldiers followed, the heels of their boots clicking against the ground.
A few meters closer to the entrance of the mansion, the soldier with the blue bandage threw his left palm over his mouth. "Ewwww...."
He coughed, staring at the corpse of the human that had been stripped of its intestines. "Guys..." he turned two steps back, then shook his head. "...If here is where the boy came, then I don’t think he’s still alive."
The two soldiers exchanged confused glances, then gave a dissatisfied sigh.
"WATCH OUT!" Before they could move a step back, a loud banging sound paraded from the top, where the cracked window was.
Shards of glass and stones slammed on the soldier with the bandage, followed by conjoined winged creatures.
"Jace..." the soldier with blood streaking from his forehead stretched his arms forward, almost as if wanting to pull the smashed soldier.
Hot air exploded from the conjoined creatures as acidic blood seeped out from their eyes, melting the ground and the skin of the already dead soldier.
Just as they covered their eyes, another scream blasted. At that instant, everything—including the flying creatures—paused, their wings unmoving as if time had stopped.
At the front of the shattered window, Kai stood there, the necklace burning in purple color as the purple glow around him increased.
"Mom..." he closed his eyes. "...you were right. I have to be strong enough to protect everyone." The love metal crumpled inward as his grip tightened.
Air blasted from Kai like the slice of a blade the moment he cracked his eyes open.
In a flash, everything that had stopped broke free from their stillness.
"What just happened?" The soldier with blood streaking his forehead turned, his breath hitching. "Did we just experience a time skip or what?"
From the front of the estate with the name ’LENA’ written boldly on it, the winged creatures snarled in one.
"SEIZE FIRE!" A loud scream tore from the throat of the young female soldier standing at the front of Merlin.
She whipped her arms in the air, then dashed toward the soldiers still firing even after hearing the order from the second-in-command.
"Sir, are they retreating?" Nally, the second-in-command, locked her gaze on the creatures flying upward.
"Don’t fool yourself. They are more intelligent than you may think." Merlin squeezed his eyes, then locked his gaze on the purple glow all the creatures were dashing toward.
’Is that...’ He paused his thoughts, then moved two steps forward. ’I need a proper view.’ He tapped on the shoulder of Nally. "I’m coming."
"Sir, should I—" Nally’s action got shortened when she saw the first-in-command waving at her to stop.
The more Merlin drew closer to the gate, the more creatures he saw dashing upward and curving toward that very same direction.
In the purple glow, Kai shoved the necklace around his head, then took in a deep breath. He bent down, grabbed the sword, then fixed his gaze on the creatures one after another.
Beside him, Higris and all other shadowy creatures lanced through the boy. Some entered into him—into the chest, into the arms, and into the sword.
Just as the last two shadows vanished into the sword, its blade blazed into a blinding silver light that mixed with the purple glow around the boy.
A grim grin lanced on Kai’s face as he gave the images in the love metal a last glance, then closed it.
"This is for you."
The echo of his voice blasted the first two creatures that were two inches away from the boy.
In a flash, Kai leaped into the air, slicing the air into two. Wet groaning sounds echoed from the creatures as the air from the swipe and the blade itself shoved through them.
When Merlin stepped into the other side of the gate, his eyes opened when he saw blood falling instead of the rain.
"YOUNG CHIN K?!"
Although Merlin had supernatural strength and the power to melt any metal under his wrist, seeing the rate at which the creatures fell from the boy’s impacts sent chills down his spine.
After ten minutes, when the last flying creature landed on the top of the MRAP, the blood rain stopped, then changed into water rain.
Hovering in the sky was Kai, the purple glow blazing around him like an unquenchable fire. The night sky had a daylight exposure as the silver glow from the sword shone like a mini sun held under the boy’s grip.
