49: Chapter 49 Work and Rest Combined

49 -49 Work and Rest Combined

Thomas Sullivan’s work style was quite different from Noah Quarter’s.

Noah Quarter was all about work every single day, whereas Thomas Sullivan knew how to strike a balance between work and leisure.

Julia Land sat on the sofa, playing Fruit Ninja on her phone.

The bedroom door was open.

Thomas Sullivan, who understood the importance of work-life balance, was inside with his kept woman, just inside.

As his secretary, she sat on the couch, waiting for him to finish so they could head to the banquet together.

She was truly dedicated to her job.

Thomas Sullivan had a cigarette between his lips, his brooding eyes intense, as he bent down to pick up his trousers from the floor.

Two delicate, boneless arms wrapped around his arm, the voice soft and clingy, “Will you stay the night?”

She gazed at the man’s muscular body, reaching out to touch it.

Thomas Sullivan buckled his belt, removed her hand, his voice extremely hoarse, “I’m not free tonight.”

His well-defined chest still bore marks as he stepped out of the bedroom and called out to Julia Land, “Secretary Land, my clothes.”

Julia Land subconsciously glanced at her watch.

There was still enough time.

She stood up and picked up a suit and pants that were on the sofa for Thomas Sullivan.

Even though she could see his impressive physique, she remained completely unfazed.

As Thomas Sullivan approached her, he leaned in, raised an eyebrow, “Are you even a woman?”

He saw that her eyes didn’t even flicker.

Julia Land’s tone was casual, her eyes glistening, “I’m not a woman, I used to be a man, but then I had surgery.”

Thomas Sullivan’s gaze dropped to her chest, where she wore a fishtail black dress for tonight’s banquet, which beautifully framed her collarbone.

He noted Julia Land’s half-smiling expression and clicked his tongue lightly as he took the clothes to change.

Julia Land would be Thomas Sullivan’s date for the banquet tonight.

The two of them left the house as the sky outside gradually darkened.

The car set off for the venue of the evening’s banquet.

Julia Land, with her arm hooked through Thomas Sullivan’s, entered the banquet.

James Thompson sat in a corner, one hand resting on the arm of the sofa, the other holding a cigarette with a somewhat lackluster interest.

Trevor Sullivan looked toward the entrance, “My brother arrived, huh?

The woman with him seems familiar; isn’t that Julia Land?”

James Thompson lazily raised his eyes, observing the man and woman as they entered.

He placed the cigarette in his mouth, his posture relaxed yet cold.

Julia Land stood by Thomas Sullivan’s side, her smile radiant.

Her high-slit dress revealed her intermittently visible beautiful legs as she moved.

She was quite the center of attention.

“It’s odd; why is Julia Land with my brother?” Trevor Sullivan stood up, a smile playing on his lips, “I’ll go ask.”

James Thompson didn’t concern himself with that.

Noah Quarter was also at the banquet tonight, bringing Arabella Shaw with him.

Arabella Shaw frowned upon seeing the lively Julia Land; how could she be here?

Tonight’s banquet was for upper-class individuals.

Arabella Shaw frowned, wondering how Julia Land, who had already divorced, managed to attend the banquet by relying on whom?

Noah Quarter’s gaze briefly passed over Julia Land; she was very focused whenever she conversed with others.

He quickly glanced at Julia Land before shifting his gaze away, unnoticed by anyone.

Meanwhile, Chloe Sullivan had been looking for a while and finally spotted James Thompson in a corner.

She walked over, sitting next to him, pouting, and spoke softly, “Brother Thompson, I’ve been looking for you for so long.”

James Thompson only hummed in response, his profile appearing somewhat aloof.

Chloe Sullivan smiled sweetly, stretching out her hand with a necklace resting in the palm, “Brother Thompson, could you help me put this on?

I can’t fasten it myself.”

James Thompson took a drag from his cigarette, gave her a look with a coldness that was both faint and lazy, which flushed Chloe Sullivan’s cheeks, “Brother Thompson, a little help?”

“You might want to ask your cousin,” he said, gesturing with his cigarette-holding hand in Thomas Sullivan’s direction, “They’re all over there.”

There, Trevor Sullivan learned upon inquiry that Julia Land had now become his brother’s female secretary.

After chatting for a bit, Trevor Sullivan pointed to James Thompson in the corner.

Julia Land looked up and saw James Thompson smoking, a girl sitting next to him, the girl named Chloe Sullivan.

Thomas Sullivan took Julia Land over, greeting James Thompson respectfully, “Mr.

Thompson.”

James Thompson nodded.

Chloe Sullivan’s smile was sweet, “Thomas, Miss Land.”

Julia Land smiled back, “Miss Sullivan.”

The Sullivan brothers took their seats, while Julia Land stood discreetly behind the couch, not wanting to interrupt their conversation.

In such gatherings, it wasn’t her place as a secretary to sit with them casually.

Trevor Sullivan looked at the necklace in Chloe Sullivan’s hand.

“Why not put it on?”

“You all came over too quickly, I was just about to ask Brother Thompson for help with the necklace,” said Chloe, her tone sweet and coy, not at all annoying, “what a pity.”

Trevor Sullivan chuckled, “May I have the honor of assisting Miss Sullivan with her necklace?”

“No,” Chloe glared at Trevor Sullivan and tugged at James Thompson’s sleeve, “Brother Thompson, will you help me put it on, please?”

Julia Land stood behind the couch, overhearing Chloe’s coquettish tone, she couldn’t help but glance in the direction of James Thompson.

The man’s collar was slightly open, relaxed, he put his cigarette into the ashtray to extinguish it, “I’m going to the restroom.”

Chloe wasn’t discouraged, she shrugged, “Brother Thompson really doesn’t understand romance.”

This statement made it sound like they were very familiar with each other.

After James Thompson left, Julia Land said to Thomas Sullivan, “I’m going to greet my ex-husband.”

Thomas Sullivan gave her a look, “Hmm.”

Julia Land picked up a glass of red wine from a waiter’s tray and walked over to Noah Quarter, her smile dazzling, “Director Quarter, Miss Shaw.”

Arabella Shaw smelled a faint scent of perfume on Julia Land.

The same scent that she’d noticed on Noah’s clothes a couple of days before.

It instantly made her heart tighten.

“Miss Shaw, you look very beautiful today,” Julia Land’s gaze swept over Arabella Shaw, as she chuckled softly, “that dress suits you well.”

In truth, Arabella had just come out of confinement, and her figure hadn’t fully returned to its pre-pregnancy state.

Her abdomen was still fleshy, and though the dress she wore tonight was slightly looser, her waistline was still not visible.

Julia Land’s inspection and compliment made the proud Arabella Shaw feel particularly displeased.

Julia Land raised her glass, clinked it with Noah’s, and downed it in one go, “Let’s chat when we have time.”

She smiled as if she truly just came over to greet them, then swayed gracefully back to Thomas Sullivan.

At an event like this, Thomas Sullivan also needed to network,

Julia Land had drank a bit too much tonight, sometimes as a secretary, she also needed to intercept drinks for Thomas Sullivan.

She planned to step out for some fresh air to clear her mind.

Thomas Sullivan saw her flushed face, clearly tipsy, and said in a low voice, “You can wait for me in the car.”

The banquet wouldn’t be over anytime soon.

Julia Land nodded, not refusing his kindness, “I’ll wait for you in the car.”

The parking lot was now empty, and the woman’s high heels clicked rhythmically on the floor.

Julia Land, head spinning, went in search of Thomas Sullivan’s car.

She was a bit unclear as to where his car was parked.

In the dim light, James Thompson leaned against the car door, his eyes cold as he heard the sound of high heels approaching and turned his head to look.

He saw the unsteady Julia Land.

Julia squinted her eyes, stopped in her tracks, her head spinning; Thomas Sullivan’s car seemed to be over there.

She hesitated for a second.

She still walked over, just wanting to rest in the car.

A hand asserted itself, gripping her waist.

In the dim space between two cars.

James Thompson held her waist, looking down at her.

The woman’s drunken, alluring flush intrigued him.

He stared at her for a moment.

“Julia Land,” his voice was deep.

Julia only felt that the man before her looked familiar; oh, it was James Thompson, she responded, “Hmm?”

He leaned down.

Julia Land made a small sound, pinching the fabric of his clothing, her pale neck arching.

He wrapped his arms around her waist, pressing her against the car.

Bodyguards were stationed at the entrance of the parking lot, preventing anyone from entering or leaving, and others checked nearby cars for people.

“Noah…”

Julia intended to say Noah, but she couldn’t bring herself to finish.

That soft, inebriated voice from the woman halted the man’s ruthless next move abruptly.

James Thompson let out a cold, mocking laugh.

Did this damned woman mistake him for Noah Quarter?
