Grand Voyage : Surviving on a Ghost Ship-Chapter 147 - Delicious Seawater
Four hours later, Yang Yi woke up and checked his condition.
His energy had only recovered to 87, which was unsurprising, since he hadn’t slept long. But there were still five hours until dawn. He planned to lie down on a deck chair until sunrise; by then, his energy would be fully restored.
He put on his bandit face scarf, pushed open the captain’s cabin door, and went to take over Suna’s night watch shift.
She was up at the bow, having built a small campfire. It looked like she was... boiling water?
Yang Yi walked over and said, “Time to switch shifts.”
Suna finally turned around.
She wore a silver beak-shaped mask and didn’t seem tired. She reached out and handed Yang Yi a pale white crystal.
“I tried evaporating seawater and got this.”
【Name: Delicious Sea Salt Chunk】
【Description: A delicious salt chunk sweeter than sugar, but which contains many impurities. If you can remove all the impurities, including the salt, it’ll become even tastier!】
Remove the salt from sea salt...?
Yang Yi read the information, feeling a bit puzzled.
If you take the salt out of sea salt, is it still sea salt? Might as well call it sea sugar!
He examined the pale salt chunk carefully.
A rich, mellow fragrance reached his nose, the bandit scarf doing little to block it. The scent was tainted with the smell of blood, which severely diminished its appeal. It didn’t make Yang Yi want to eat the salt chunk.
At most, it just made his throat feel dry.
He swallowed and looked at Suna, prompting her, “Alright, go get some rest. Tomorrow’s probably going to be a long day.”
Suna nodded and stood up decisively, heading to her room. She left the uncleaned campfire and pot at the bow to Yang Yi.
The seawater in the pot was still boiling.
Yang Yi didn’t rush to clean up. He used his three-eyed scan to check the surrounding sea but didn’t detect anything suspicious.
That strange liquid floating on the sea didn’t seem to be spreading.
After confirming everything was normal, he put out the fire, dumped the concentrated seawater from the pot, then moved a chair onto the deck and sat down to wait for sunrise.
No danger occurred.
...
Five hours later, dawn finally broke.
Yang Yi piloted the Nightmare Star forward at about 40 knots.
Within just fifteen minutes, he arrived at the layered section of the sea.
Suna was already awake, using binoculars to observe the waters.
About 200 metres from the Nightmare Star, a white, greasy film floated on the sea surface. It looked like the fat and fluids found inside those delicious fish and mushrooms, but less viscous.
It was a large quantity, stretched out in a straight line across the sea like a clear boundary, much like an oil spill, only white in color.
A massive number of fish and shrimp gathered at the surface, gulping down the milky liquid.
There were common fish like pufferfish, groupers, pomfrets, sharks, even deep-sea species that would normally die in shallow waters. There were also plenty of octopuses, squids, sea cucumbers, lobsters, and shellfish. Yang Yi even spotted the shadow of a whale, roughly a nautical mile or two away, with huge jets of water spurting into the sky.
The sea creatures were either already bloated or on their way to becoming so, basically in stage one or two of transformation.
Because of the sheer number of creatures congregated at the surface, the sea was churning with splashes and fish rolling in the milky fluid.
At first glance, it looked like a basin full of loaches with a generous pour of milk on top.
【Disturbing Feast. Your sanity drops by 10】
Suna put down her binoculars and immediately told Yang Yi to steer the ship closer.
She was well-prepared, with wooden buckets connected by rope at her feet, ready to scoop up some of the white liquid for analysis.
Yang Yi didn’t approach right away. Instead, he turned the ship sideways and fired a few rounds at the fish.
Boom! Boom!
The submerged cannon fired a standard shell, splashing several metres high on the sea surface and tearing through a large number of marine creatures along the way.
Logically, the fish should have fled, however, they continued gulping down the milky white liquid, even consuming the dead fish along with it...
That was probably the very reason the liquid hadn’t spread further — it was being consumed entirely by the sea creatures.
Yang Yi fired a few more shots and waited several minutes. After confirming that no large creatures were surfacing, he finally piloted the Nightmare Star forward.
Upon entering the area, the resistance against the ship noticeably increased because of the fish acting as obstacles.
They kept bumping into the hull of the Nightmare Star, producing dull thuds, yet couldn’t harm the bone-structured vessel.
Moreover, the fish weren’t deliberately ramming the ship, they were simply so focused on drinking the white liquid that they accidentally collided with it.
Yang Yi checked the sea chart. He was still about 200 nautical miles from the Bountiful Sea Region. So, the white liquid most likely seeped in from the Bountiful Sea.
He continued to advance.
Suna, meanwhile, carried a bucket to scoop up some of the liquid.
On her first try, she barely collected any of the milky fluid but ended up with half a bucket of fish instead.
Had she used a fishing net, it would’ve been impossible to haul it up — she’d need to measure the catch by the ton!
The fish had no food value. Suna dumped them back into the ocean, keeping only a few litres of the white liquid, which she took into the lab for analysis.
Yang Yi was busy taking photos, documenting the sea conditions, valuable data he could later sell for a good price.
The farther they went, the deeper the white liquid got, and the bigger the fish became. Thankfully, the creatures weren’t aggressive. If they had attacked the Nightmare Star en masse, it would’ve been serious trouble.
Like that, the Nightmare Star sailed for nearly six hours before finally reaching the edge of the Bountiful Sea Region. Along the way, he encountered two whales, each estimated to be over ten metres long.
While gulping down the white fluid, they also inhaled large numbers of fish, only to later spout out regular seawater. It seemed that even they regarded the liquid as food.
They were too busy feeding to attack the Nightmare Star, but their huge, rounded bodies beneath the water still posed a serious threat — one collision could do major damage.
Yang Yi had no intention of provoking such underwater giants, since the primary purpose of this mission was reconnaissance. Gathering intel was his top priority.
As they went further, the white liquid grew deeper and began to replace the sea entirely, turning the water completely white, making it almost impossible to discern what lay beneath.
Only the three-eyed vision could penetrate somewhat deeper, but even that had its limits.
At that point, small fish and shrimp had completely vanished. Only huge shapes could be seen moving underwater, but it was difficult to tell what species they were, as all were round-bodied and at least three metres long.
Just as Yang Yi was about to enter the Bountiful Sea Region, Suna sent him a private message, asking him to come to the lab.
“She's not going to extract my spinal fluid, is she?”
“?”
Suna first replied with a question mark, then sent over an item description:
【Name: Delicious Honey】
【Description: A crystal obtained by concentrating and evaporating seawater from the Bountiful Sea Region. Sweet and aromatic.】
“Hurry, I’ve made a discovery!” she added.
Yang Yi immediately stopped the ship but didn’t drop anchor, afraid something beneath might swallow it.
Then he activated the Twilight Veil and headed for the cabin.
