Grand Voyage : Surviving on a Ghost Ship-Chapter 216 - Finally caught you!
New Novel🪶
The forest sprite’s right hand, which had been grasping at nothing, suddenly split open with a gaping wound, and white sap sprayed forth.
In the next instant, the cage imprisoning Yang Yi shattered to pieces. The vines were sliced apart like vegetables, torn, and splintered, as a dark figure burst free from within.
It was Yang Yi, but his appearance had changed drastically.
The armour of the Penitent Knight he wore was shedding black flakes, its etched patterns writhing subtly like living things. Just looking at it made one’s head spin, it radiated corruption and malevolence.
His stance, too, was different.
He held his greatsword in a textbook two-handed opening pose, the blade standing upright to his right side.
That posture required not only strength, but years of training. Only those who had endured countless battles could exude such an aura of tempered steel.
And indeed, he had.
When the vines surged toward him once more, Yang Yi merely swung his massive sword with casual ease, slicing them all apart. Many were not even cut, they were simply smashed through by brute force.
Something was deeply strange about Yang Yi. Somehow, he had mastered swordsmanship, his body moved instinctively, as if honed through endless practice.
And what’s more, he could now wield spells of the Radiant faith.
Yang Yi shot forwards like a black meteor, fragments scattering behind him in a dark arc.
The vines that tried to stop him were sliced apart or shattered outright. Nothing could hold him back, and he ignored every attack, refusing to dodge.
In moments, he stood before the forest sprite, both hands lifting the sword high above his head. A blinding, radiant light flared from the blade.
It was one of the signature techniques of the Holy Church of Light, The Saintly Severance.
【Saintly Severance: A spell bestowed by the Goddess of Radiance. Only the skilled in swordsmanship and steadfast in faith may learn it. Consumes 3 mana. Power varies with the wielder. This strike brings no pain. It is a merciful blow, if the heretic’s head is severed, death is delayed, allowing ample time for repentance. 】
But soon, that dazzling brilliance began to warp, tainted, clouded, and darkened into a murky halo of gray and black.
As for the result...
The attack had missed its mark. The creature’s speed far exceeded his expectations.
It was extraordinarily agile, especially in its forest domain, where it could propel itself rapidly with its own vines.
Previously, it had remained still not out of weakness, but simply because it hadn’t needed to move. It had been baiting Yang Yi to strike first.
“AAAAAHHHHHHH!!!”
A blood-curdling scream echoed through the entire forest. Trees shook, and leaves scattered like rain.
The forest sprite dug its fingers into its own eye sockets, tearing out the roots within before the wailing finally stopped. Its face twisted in terror and pain.
Unlike the sacred mercy of Saintly Severance, this new strike was blasphemous, evil.
Even a glancing wound inflicted unbearable agony. The pain would only end when the victim tore away the corrupted flesh or passed out from sheer torment.
It was, without question, a vicious and cursed spell. And it bore a new name: The Oathbreaker’s Severance.
【Oathbreaker’s Severance: A blasphemous spell born from the corruption of the Saintly Severance. Consumes 3 mana. Power varies with the wielder. This strike inflicts excruciating pain, an act of pure malice. If the head of a Radiant Church believer is severed, death will not come swiftly; they will be left to experience pain beyond imagining. 】
Because it originated from a Radiant spell, it still counted as one, though corrupted. Its mana cost was reduced by two, requiring only one point of mana to cast.
“What... are you?”
The forest sprite’s twisted face contorted further, white sap streaming from its sealed eyes like tears.
The latter gave no reply. His helmet’s visor opened, and he swallowed the two freshly severed twigs whole.
They tasted sweet, melting instantly on his tongue.
Yang Yi’s attributes rose once again, his Strength, Agility, and Constitution each increased by two points. His body swelled slightly, and a deep, rumbling growl echoed from his stomach.
Along with it came an overwhelming, uncontrollable hunger.
Drool began seeping through the gaps of his helmet, dripping down in long strands.
The forest sprite saw this transformation clearly. The fear on its face deepened, changing from shock to sheer dread.
“You… you’re a Banquet Devourer…?”
Panic flooded the creature, it wanted to flee.
Banquet Devourers could consume delicacies to grow stronger. They were the natural enemies of the Rotwhales.
The former sat at the dining table; the latter lay upon it.
Unless the Rotwhale’s size was enough to burst the Devourer’s belly, it stood no chance of survival.
It had to escape, otherwise it would be eaten alive!
As the forest sprite prepared to flee, the entire forest began to sink downwards. But Yang Yi moved too fast. In an instant, he appeared right before it, far too close for comfort.
This time, he didn’t use Oathbreaker’s Severance. Instead, he reached out barehanded, like someone grabbing a meal!
Facing mortal peril, the forest sprite unleashed its trump card, its inherited primal spell: Spear of the Forest.
Its mouth stretched open to an absurd degree, almost large enough to swallow its entire body. Then, two massive branches shot out from its throat, spiraling together into a cone-shaped spear that pierced straight into Yang Yi’s chest.
The strike was devastating, it tore through the Penitent Knight’s armour, impaling Yang Yi through the abdomen and hurling him backward, pinning him to a massive tree trunk!
Crimson blood sprayed through the air, and the forest sprite could taste that familiar flavour again.
“Got him…?”
It murmured weakly, tinged with a hint of joy.
Its species had evolved through unnatural means, and its growth was rapid.
Using primal magic exacted a heavy toll. After casting it, its once-deep green skin faded to pale green, as if bleached by white dye. If it used the spell again, it would likely transform completely into a mindless Fruit of Abundance.
Still, the attack had worked brilliantly. It had pierced the armour, impaled the wretched human, and hung him on a tree.
The forest sprite looked toward Yang Yi.
He hung motionless, lifeless even. Vines slithered around his body, binding his limbs tightly in a cruciform shape against the trunk.
In that state, he couldn’t possibly move, much less fight. And with the spear through his abdomen, he had to be finished.
The forest sprite was confident in the power of its strike.
It approached cautiously. Still, Yang Yi didn’t move.
“Dead…?”
The creature wasn’t surprised.
Every extraordinary power carried a prize. And Yang Yi’s body, corrupted and complex as it was, had already surpassed the limits of what a human could bear.
Combined with that devastating blow, his death was all but certain.
…Wait.
The forest sprite froze. A strange noise reached its ears, a grinding, gnawing sound.
It was coming from right in front of it.
Its hollow eyes widened. Its mouth fell open.
From within the torn gap in Yang Yi’s chest armor, it saw teeth. Yes. A huge, monstrous mouth was hidden beneath the armour, now chewing, gnawing on the wooden spear like a teething stick.
“What is… this…?”
Terror welled up from the depths of the forest sprite’s being.
Then, a long, slick, saliva-coated tongue slithered through the gap, wrapping around the wooden spear, and in the next heartbeat, coiled tightly around the forest sprite itself.
“Finally caught you.”
Yang Yi spoke for the first time since donning his helmet.
