The gunshot was loud. Since it was fired so close to the Sanctuary, the sound even echoed.

Yang Yi waited a while, then raised the binoculars to check the deck of the native vessel.

No movement. No one rushed out. The ship looked empty.

He also used the Three Eyes to watch the Sanctuary itself, in case the gunshot caused any change or stirred something inside.

If he could see the signs ahead of time, he would have more confidence in what came next.

About five minutes passed. The stillness returned, nothing unusual happened, except for the dozen or so dark shapes that now crowded Nightmare Star’s deck.

They seemed drawn by the gunshot. It was within expectations, so Yang Yi gave them little attention.

Their only real threat was how they quickened the spread of the surrounding darkness. The more there were, the faster it grew.

But Yang Yi had ways to handle the darkness, so he felt no urgency.

He directed the old captain to bring the ship closer, guiding it into the Sanctuary’s port, aiming to berth beside the native vessel.

Compared to the Sanctuary, that vessel was so small it was almost negligible. It would be easier to explore, so he planned to start with it first.

There might even be information about the Sanctuary inside.

Ten minutes later, Nightmare Star came to a smooth stop beside the native ship.

There were about ten metres between them, with a height difference of roughly one and a half.

Inside the port were several piers of different sizes, enough to hold various vessels. The longest pier, the one deep inside, could even dock a ship over a hundred meters long.

And since everything was afloat, grounding wasn’t a concern at all.

With docking complete, Yang Yi and Suna prepared to board and take a look.

“Come on up.”

Yang Yi strapped on the greaves and boots of the Penitent Armour, shifted into werewolf form, and crouched so Suna could climb onto his back.

Next to him, she looked almost tiny. His powerful frame stood over three metres tall, and carrying someone on his neck felt like nothing.

Suna frowned, reluctant, but she complied. 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢

It was simply safer this way. She wouldn’t have to worry about the darkness below, and they could get onto the native deck much faster.

“Quit pulling my ears,” Yang Yi snapped.

She had grabbed his wolf ears to steady herself.

“Oh.”

Yang Yi readied himself. He drew the Ironbreaker greatsword in his right hand, and with his left he took out three vials of holy water, splashing both himself and Suna.

One more layer of insurance. If either of them brushed against the darkness, it might prevent injury.

But the moment it touched the armour, the holy water reacted like cold on red-hot metal. It sizzled, steamed, and vanished.

Yang Yi even felt a faint burn.

“It does that?”

He checked his fur in surprise. No smoke. He let out a breath.

Someone like him, who could shift between man and wolf while keeping his mind, apparently wasn’t recognised as evil.

That wasn’t too strange. It was likely the Radiant Church had others like him.

He thought of the strange figure carved into the holy coffer’s totem. Those people were far from normal.

After the holy water, he uncorked a vial of Pale Worm oil and coated his legs and boots.

If needed, he could ignite the oil on the armor to stop the darkness from creeping onto his flesh.

Once preparations were complete, he glanced up at Suna.

“Hold tight.”

Then he gripped the mast and began to descend at speed.

The darkness had already spread about five meters up the mast, and it was still climbing.

Once Yang Yi reached the right height, he let go, pushed off the mast, and arced cleanly through the air.

He landed without stumbling, just outside the ring of shadows.

The shadows surged towards him, but they were cut down in moments by the Ironbreaker blade.

A sword over two meters long turned the cluster into drifting remnants with fewer than five swings.

Unfortunately, none of them dropped a Dark Core.

Yang Yi didn’t bother checking on Nightmare Star.

Even if the darkness climbed the mast and reached the lookout, threatening the tasty potted plants up there, it would take at least ten days.

He sprinted a short distance to the ship’s rail, gathered power, and leapt toward the native vessel’s deck.

He even held Suna steady with his left hand so she wouldn’t slip.

Except—

A thunderous crash.

Splinters and dust burst outward.

The native ship’s deck gave way. Yang Yi fell straight through into the hold.

“What kind of trash ship is this?!”

His voice came out of the smoke. He hadn’t expected the deck to be so weak. He broke through with a single landing. Nothing like a player-built hull.

At least his balance saved him from collapsing in the hold.

But what happened next was beyond anything he imagined.

Logic said the shattered planks and swirling black mist should have brushed against both him and Suna. It was nearly unavoidable.

Instead, the opposite occurred.

A strong warm light flared from the hold, sweeping away the darkness completely.

“Where is that coming from?”

Yang Yi frowned.

He was tall enough in wolf form that his head still rose above the broken deck.

“It came from under you. Put me down,” Suna said.

She had already seen the source. Something under his feet had been crushed.

Seeing no immediate danger, Yang Yi dispelled the werewolf form and set her down. Then he crouched to look.

He had indeed stepped on something.

Among the rotted planks and debris were fragments that glowed white. The light was much stronger than holy water.

Yang Yi picked up a piece, and information surfaced.

【Name: Light Sprite】

【Description: A humanoid creature that naturally emits light. Small in size, usually around ten centimeters tall. Possesses four pairs of wings. Tough and difficult to kill, though completely lacking in combat ability. The light they give off can repel darkness, so people of the Lightless Sea often use them as living lanterns, forming an entire industry around the practice. 】

“Light sprites?”

Yang Yi studied the glowing piece. The more he looked, the more it resembled a tiny finger. As if broken from a figurine.

Suna picked up a foot, just as small. Its severed edge looked like porcelain or glass, webbed with faint cracks.

She then found a black oval container on the floor. Three remained intact. The rest had been crushed under Yang Yi’s landing.

When twisted, the container split open, revealing fragments inside that glowed like a searchlight.

It had an information tag of its own:

【Name: Sealed Light Container (Small) 】

【Type: Consumable】【Quality: Fine】

【Description: A black container dyed with Dark Core pigment, holding fragments of a shattered Light Sprite. Different container sizes produce different light levels. The light lasts until the sprite’s remains fully decay. Its glow can drive back the darkness. 】
