Grand Voyage : Surviving on a Ghost Ship-Chapter 257 - Entering the Sanctuary Ship - part 1
Yang Yi didn’t rush to explore the ship.
After checking the deck, he returned with Suna to the cabin of the indigenous ship.
Leaning on the light emitted by the containers, they read through the captain’s notes, or rather, the captain’s log.
The two of them read and discussed as they went.
The ship’s captain was named Direk. In his notes, he recorded numerous trivial details as well as plans and schedules. The three of them were saving money, preparing for a long voyage, and planning to head to the Miracle Sea.
It was said that the light there was free, no purchases required, and the darkness didn’t invade. Some even claimed divine protection.
Direk had repeatedly expressed admiration for the Miracle Sea’s beauty, though he had never seen it himself and could only imagine.
He had bought the world map for 1,000 Shell Coins from the Golden Merchant Guild.
Yang Yi skimmed through, focusing only on the important points and skipping over irrelevant details.
Among all the notes, the most valuable information was the hand-drawn sea chart, which would guide his upcoming navigation.
The Sanctuary Ship, or the Great Cross Ruins, was carefully mapped out.
Based on the marked docking points, Yang Yi could roughly determine the positions of Cook Island and the Golden Merchant Guild.
An hour passed quickly, and Yang Yi received a system notification: the ship could now be disassembled.
Disassembling would yield the following materials:
The quantities weren’t large, as the ship was heavily decayed.
After reading the notes, Yang Yi gained a better understanding of magical ships in this world.
This ship was essentially like a system ship, capable of continuous navigation, operated in the same way.
Some organisations mastered the techniques for constructing magical ships, while other magical ships were discovered by the indigenous people in dangerous areas such as graveyards or ruins at sea.
These had originally been system ships controlled by players.
After the player’s death, these ships didn’t disappear. The indigenous people would drag them back, modify them, and turn them into indigenous magical ships.
Ships of this type made up a large proportion, Yang Yi’s current ship was one of them.
After indigenous modifications, these ships were no longer recognised by the system, and their names didn’t appear on the crystal ball map.
The indigenous controlled magical ships by manually steering the helm.
Unlike system ships, there were no permission restrictions, so at least for low-level magical ships, anyone could operate them.
They typically removed the helm wheel, carrying it like a car key, or left someone onboard to watch the ship.
Yang Yi closed the notes, ready to disassemble this ship and move on to explore the Sanctuary Ship.
“Let’s go.”
He told Suna and stood up.
The two returned to the deck, each with a container of stored light hanging from their waist, the slit barely open.
The light illuminated about a meter around them, enough to dispel the darkness. For ordinary activities, this brightness was sufficient to avoid contact with the darkness.
But for exploration, this level of illumination would be too weak.
Yang Yi twisted the containers to widen the slit, making the light somewhat dazzling, enough to disperse the surrounding black fog over ten metres.
Satisfied, he nodded.
According to the scale on the container, a brand-new container could sustain this brightness for about three hours.
He studied the notes to understand the meaning of the markings on the containers.
At the edge of the ship, he held the container down to light the pier, driving away the darkness and revealing the bluish-gray metal surface below.
Though corroded by the darkness, the metal showed no extensive rust, only some scuffed marks and stains, and some areas where it seemed like flaking wall plaster, with pieces of metal fallen off.
He hung the container back on his waist and jumped down, landing on the metal pier, which felt solid and firm underfoot.
“Come down.”
Yang Yi called to Suna, signalling that he would catch her.
However, he had clearly underestimated her skills.
From less than two metres up, she simply placed her hands on the ship’s edge and leapt effortlessly, landing safely on the pier. It seemed her basic attributes had improved, though by how much was unclear.
Yang Yi operated the system through the activity log, pressed confirm, and disassembled the ship.
The magical ship was broken down into various fragments, transformed into materials, and sent flying into the Nightmare Star’s cargo hold.
With the ship disassembled, Yang Yi took the lead, walking ahead.
The container at his waist shone brighter, illuminating the darkness and revealing the surrounding environment.
According to the notes, there was an open door at this port, an entrance previously opened by other explorers.
“Found it!”
Yang Yi arrived at a breach. It had originally been a door but had been removed, leaving only a passageway. With light, it was easy to spot.
“Looks like it was opened by high heat or a corrosive liquid.”
Suna touched the edges, noting signs of corrosion and melting on the metal, with localised rust damage.
Yang Yi looked up at the doorway. Two exposed metal frames were visible, probably mounts for weapons such as machine guns, but they had been removed, whereabouts unknown.
“They didn’t even leave the weapons on the walls…”
Yang Yi’s expectations for the Sanctuary Ship’s interior dropped considerably; the good stuff had likely been taken.
They entered the Sanctuary Ship. Inside was a narrow corridor, completely shrouded in darkness. Without light or another means to counter the darkness, exploration would be impossible.
The ceiling was less than three metres high and about the same width. Yang Yi probably couldn’t stand straight even in human form.
He held a flintlock in one hand and the Flame Serpent’s Fang in the other, moving ahead.
Soon, he reached an area resembling a reception desk. After checking, he found all the drawers and cabinets stripped clean.
If the desk wasn’t attached to the floor, it probably would have been taken as well.
After checking several other locations, Yang Yi had a preliminary understanding of the Sanctuary Ship’s interior.
The ship had been thoroughly looted by the indigenous people; high-value items had likely been taken. Near the entrance, for example, there was almost nothing of worth.
They quickened their pace, searching through the Sanctuary Ship.
Without a specific target, they examined anything in sight. They quickly reached the third floor, which contained many small rooms, likely living quarters, all completely emptied.
Yang Yi checked two rooms before deciding it wasn’t worth further inspection.
Notably, there was even a washroom, suggesting the living conditions here had been fairly decent.
About fifteen minutes had passed since entering the Sanctuary Ship, and Yang Yi had not received any occupation notifications.
“Seems like there’s something else on this ship besides us.”
This was expected, on a ship this large, it would be odd for it to be entirely empty.
They came to an elevator and stopped.
It had long been out of service; the doors had been violently ripped off, leaving just a dark shaft. The ladder was probably not on this floor, leaving it as a pitch-black well.
Yang Yi didn’t pause because of the elevator itself, but because of a map next to it, showing their current position and the internal layout of the Sanctuary Ship.
The text… was in simplified Chinese, looking just like the maps seen in shopping malls.
The indigenous people had probably seen it too, but they couldn’t read Chinese and didn’t understand the circled numbers.
Yang Yi poured a bottle of brandy over the map and wiped it with the sailor uniform he had recently obtained, using it as a rag.
