"No one knows why they take the totems," Xie Daiyu replied after a long pause. "Some say that they are trying to revive the Dark Shaman, while some say that the soul of the Dark Shaman is still lingering and wandering in this world. Thus, these Death Hunters collected the totems because they wanted to create a beast warrior who was strong enough to withstand the strength and power of the soul of the Dark Shaman once their body is possessed."

Ruan Chanchan didn’t know whether it was due to the dark words that the mer was saying to her, or it was her own imagination, but for some reason, the cave suddenly felt really cold. It was as if something was staring at her from behind, and it was not a good feeling. Not at all.

She slowly turned her head and looked around the cave. Naturally, she didn’t see anything, but the unnerving feeling was still there, which made her a bit nervous. Swallowing hard, she turned to look at the mer in front of her and smiled when she noticed that he was looking at her with a confused look in his eyes.

"I–I see, thats some really scary— I mean, really exciting story. Really thrilling." Now Ruan Chanchan was regretting. Why did she even ask Xie Daiyu to tell her more about the Death Hunters and their stupid fetish with the totem collection?

"Are you scared?" Xie Daiyu didn’t realise what was going on, but then he took a good look at Ruan Chanchan’s face. Those dilated eyes and shivering lips. Wasn’t this how the children in his tribe reacted when he told them about the Death Hunters? He chuckled softly and said to her, "There is no need to be so scared. Even if the soul of the Dark Shaman is lingering, he will never be able to come inside the tribe?"

"How do you know that?" Ruan Chanchan asked despite her desire to tell Xie Daiyu that she wasn’t scared. She cleared her throat and said to him, "Not that I am scared; I am just asking because I am curious."

Xie Daiyu smiled but didn’t expose her lies. "Because of Priestess Yuan. She and her family were blessed by the Beast Goddess. Thus, wherever there is a priestess in a tribe, the soul of the Dark Shaman will never be able to enter that tribe."

Ruan Chanchan nodded while poking the mud-covered ball. She took a look at the clock inside the supermarket with her spiritual essence and nodded. "Okay, we can eat now."

"I will eat first." Xie Daiyu was still very much worried about the mud ball and was sure that it wouldn’t taste good. So he decided to take over the task of eating first. That way, Ruan Chanchan wouldn’t have to taste something unpalatable.

When Ruan Chanchan saw his expression that resembled a mer who was about to be hanged to death, her lips couldn’t help but twitch in amusement. She shook her head and pulled out the mud ball. With a stone, she cracked it open and pulled the steaming leaves apart. As soon as she pulled the leaves open, the scent of the cooked bluebird meat started to spread all over the cave. The scent was tantalising and the meat was juicy, with a layer of oil glistening over the meat.

When Ruan Chanchan saw the fatty layer, her eyes widened in surprise. This blue bird was a bit better than the chicken sold in her world. It was much fresher and fatter. 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺

Ruan Chanchan was quite happy, and she easily pulled off the leg of the blue bird meat and handed it to Xie Daiyu.

After smelling the delicious scent, Xie Daiyu’s mouth was already watering. He took a piece of the leg and took a big bite. A savoury and sweet taste exploded in his mouth, and he couldn’t help but moan in delight as soon as he finished chewing.

Ruan Chanchan saw that the mer was enjoying the blue bird meat and took a bite as well. It wasn’t as good as the Peking duck or the roasted chicken that she ate in her world, but as she had cooked it with a lack of seasonings, she thought it was quite good. At least there was no gamey taste in the meat like the rest of the beast meat.

"Do you like it?" Ruan Chanchan asked when she saw that Xie Daiyu was now impatiently tearing bits of meat off the blue bird.

"Yes, it’s quite delicious. I have never eaten anything more delicious than this." Xie Daiyu was not lying. The meat was cooked to perfection, and the thin layer of oil and salt only made it taste even better. Woohoo, now he was worried that he would never be able to eat the beast meat without acting fussy.

He chewed on the meat and muttered, "It would be better if we could deal with the gamey taste of the beast meat. Then we can eat lots and lots of meat." The bluebird meat tasted good, but it was too little and he was still behaving politely, as he couldn’t eat all the meat, as Ruan Chanchan also needed to eat it.

Ruan Chanchan pursed her lips. She said to the mer, "Well, it’s not really impossible for me to take care of the gamey taste, but it will take a little while." She could always make use of soy sauce, MSG and other condiments to deal with the gamey taste of the beast meat, but it would take some time.

"Really? Can you do it?" Xie Daiyu asked. His eyes were shining with glee as he looked at Ruan Chanchan, who was amused by his expression.

It seems like even if this mer was a bit cold and wore an icy expression all the time. With a hint of maturity, he actually has the temperament of a little mer who is too prideful.

She nodded with a smile. "I can, but not now."
