"What did I do?" Ruan Chanchan asked with a startled look on her face. She just reached out to hold his hand and nothing else, didn’t she? Why was he acting as if she had bitten him to death? She frowned and peered up at Yuan Ni before saying to him, "Are you okay? Why are you reacting like this?"

Yuan Ni breathed out heavily. With his hand placed on his chest, he eyed Ruan Chanchan with a hint of a troubled look on his face. He could see that Ruan Chanchan was speaking the truth; she seemed genuinely confused, as if she couldn’t understand what he was even talking about. A hint of complex emotions flashed in his eyes as he couldn’t understand what just happened; however, he suppressed the confusion in his heart and said to Ruan Chanchan, "It’s nothing. Maybe I misunderstood something."

He then spun on his feet and walked away without looking at Ruan Chanchan.

Though he was acting nonchalant on the surface, inwardly, he was filled with confusion as he couldn’t understand what just happened. Ruan Chanchan said that she did not do anything; if she did not do anything, then why did he feel so freaking weird just now?

Yuan Ni was confused, and Ruan Chanchan was just as confused.

She turned to look at Xiao Xi and asked in a low voice, "Are you sure that this mer is one hundred per cent alright? What if he ended up having some sort of severe damage or side effect due to the antidote that he took? I don’t want to be responsible for his craziness."

Xiao Xi’s chest puffed out when he heard Ruan Chanchan’s question. He turned to look at Ruan Chanchan and said indignantly, "There is no side effect of the antidote that I gave you. This antidote is one hundred per cent legit and safe. There is no way there will be any side effects. So you better not show any distrust of the antidote provided by the main system, or else he will get angry..."

"Alright—alright—"

Ruan Chanchan raised her hands in the air before saying to him, "I am not doubting the main system. I was just asking why this mer was acting so weird out of nowhere." Yuan Ni’s actions were so weirdly confusing that they made her question whether his treatment was properly done or not.

"You should be questioning the main system when he starts behaving." Xiao Xi rolled his eyes at Yuan Ni, whom he hadn’t forgiven as easily as Ruan Chanchan. He glared at the mer who was walking in the front and then said to Ruan Chanchan, "If he suddenly started acting properly, then you should have said that we made a mistake."

She opened her mouth, but as soon as the words ’Are you kidding me?’ came up, she pursed her lips and swallowed them down. Because somewhere in her mind, she realised that what the system was saying was indeed correct. Yuan Ni was a weirdo through and through. Rather than doubting Xiao Xi when Yuan Ni started acting up, she should be questioning him when the mer suddenly started acting accordingly.

"Shall I call him now?" Yuan Ni asked as they arrived at the field where the people from the tribe collected the wild herbs and edible ferns.

"No. Let me first observe this friend of yours to see if he is suitable for the job or not." Ruan Chanchan stopped the mer.

After becoming her partner, he would definitely come into many of her secrets. Even the items that were taken out of the supermarket might appear in front of this mer. For her, even the smallest things needed to be kept a secret, so this candidate needed to be selected very carefully.

Yuan Ni parted his lips and went to say something, but after thinking it through, he realised that Ruan Chanchan’s demand was not unreasonable. So he hesitated for a moment and then agreed with a nod. "Alright."

Ruan Chanchan then sneakily walked over to the field and observed the many men, mers and children, along with women who were collecting the herbs. After carefully looking around, she discovered a mer who was nimbly collecting the herbs in the field. She watched him change his form from a human to a fox and then back to a human.

Ruan Chanchan at once knew that it was this mer because she had seen him with Yuan Ni many times before, and he was the only one who was angry with Yuan Ni when he stupidly ate those mushrooms under the goading of Shao Xia.

While she was paying attention to the mer, Ruan Chanchan naturally heard some gossip taking place around her.

"Su Mo, why don’t you try getting close to Ruan Chanchan? I heard that you are getting squeezed out in that small cave of yours. The chief is treating Ruan Chanchan really well, and she is even involved with Xie Daiyu. Maybe if you get close to her, then you might be able to live a good life with her?" one of the mers spoke up.

"No. I have to take care of my uncles. They are pregnant, and it’s not good for me to leave them alone when they need me." The young mer replied softly. He finished collecting another round of mushrooms and placed them neatly in the wicker basket.

"Are you for real, Su Mo? Do you even know that you are being foolish? Ruan Chanchan is a hot commodity now. Many of the mers are eyeing her now because she is being held in great reverence by the chief. Yet you don’t even want to get close to her? Are you in the right state of mind or not?" One of the older mers asked with an exasperated expression.

"That’s right. Nothing is better than getting involved with someone who has all the right connections. Chief Xie, a strong brother like Ruan Zeqiu and a mate like Xie Daiyu. What else do you even want? Look at me. I tried to stay alone and ended up losing everything. Now I don’t even have someone to rely on." Another mer sighed heavily. "Just look at what happened to master Yuan. He lost his daughter, and now he is having a hard time eating meat. It’s better to rely on others than yourself."
