Chapter 119 – A Devil Among Angels

Her voice.

Warm. Sharp. Familiar.

Lux blinked. Took a step back.

There she was.

Selena.

Still in her battle form. Her wings extended, golden-feathered and glowing. Armor cracked and lined with residual light. Her blade still shimmered with celestial fire. Her entire body radiated divine pressure, the kind that made lesser beings faint just by standing nearby.

Several nearby angels started whispering louder.

Lux gave her a once-over.

"Hey," he said, voice dry. "You’re back."

She frowned. "Are you okay?"

He paused.

Then nodded. "Yeah. Still in one piece. Got yelled at by a dog, but other than that, great."

Selena blinked. "What?"

He tilted his chin toward the retriever still growling quietly in the distance.

"Didn’t appreciate my devil musk, apparently."

Her gaze followed his. "That’s the retriever from before?"

"The majestic one. Yeah. Turns out I’m not his type."

She stepped closer, her eyes scanning his body—checking for injuries, lingering magic, leftover blood.

Lux smirked. "You’re not being subtle."

"You look like you clawed your way out of a furnace."

"I did."

A pause.

She tilted her head. "Sorry, you have to fight him alone."

Lux’s smirk faded slightly. "You got flash-evicted. Don’t worry about it."

"Still." Her voice softened. "You sure you’re okay?"

He looked at her. Really looked.

And... she meant it.

Not curiosity. Not concern for optics or protocol. Just real, raw, battle-worn care. Her eyes held it. The slight tension in her brows. The subtle draw in her shoulders.

He sighed.

"I’m fine," he said again, quieter. "Really. Just tired of being the apocalypse that shows up on casual Tuesdays."

She exhaled, brushing back a lock of her glowing hair.

The silence between them stretched. Long. Uncomfortable. Familiar.

Then Lux looked around again.

The staring. The awkward tension in the air. The whispers.

Yeah.

Not about to get better with two overloaded battle auras standing around the family-friendly zone.

He cleared his throat, leaned in a little toward her, and said under his breath:

"How about... turn yourself to your normal form first?"

She blinked. "What?"

He gestured subtly to the crowd.

"I think they think you’re here to catch me," he said dryly. "Or smite me. Or kick me out with a sermon. Honestly, could go either way."

Selena glanced around. Noticed the way people were backing up. Noticed the retriever still staring at her now too.

Her expression shifted.

"...Oh."

Lux grinned again, softer this time. "Yeah. You’re kinda glowing like a divine SWAT team."

Selena groaned and rolled her eyes. "Fine."

She closed her eyes.

Light shimmered. Her wings folded and disappeared. Her armor melted into a sleek dress with silver runes faintly glowing at the hem. Her blade vanished into a pendant around her neck.

When she opened her eyes, they were still sharp. But not blinding.

Lux raised his brows. "Much better."

People around them finally started... breathing. Moving again. A harp resumed. The dog sat back down.

Lux stretched his arms behind his head, glancing at her. "You know," he said, smirking again, "for someone from the realm of love and light, you really need to work on your first impressions."

Selena smiled faintly. "Says the devil who impaled a seraph in Limbo and walked back into a park like it was a coffee break."

"Fair."

And for a second, just a second— the air felt lighter.

Then Lux’s voice came.

Softer now. Lower.

"I guess..." He paused. Looked down at his hands for a second. "I guess I should go back now."

Selena turned her head, brows pinching slightly. "What?"

"I mean," Lux said, rubbing the back of his neck, "I know I’m the only devil who can walk around this place without spontaneously combusting. I’ve got the permits and the legal shield and the divine hall pass or whatever."

He half-smiled. That lazy, cocky, arrogant thing he always did—except this time it didn’t have the same weight.

"But I also know not everyone here wants me to be here." He glanced around slowly. "Even if no one says it, I see it. Feel it."

Selena followed his eyes.

Yeah.

Some angels still stared. Not in fear anymore. Not exactly.

But with... unease. Like Lux’s existence rubbed their soul the wrong way.

Like he was the echo of a bad memory. A reminder that devils could walk among them now. freēwēbηovel.c૦m

A new norm they never agreed to.

Lux’s voice remained steady, but the edge was dulled.

"I mean... I’m a devil. I’m from the underworld. Born from Greed and Lust and all the wrong things. So..." He gave a small shrug. "Guess I’m just a tolerated threat until someone up there changes their mind."

Selena’s heart ached.

She hated that he said it like it was just a fact.

Not with bitterness.

Not with anger.

Just... truth.

And the worst part?

She couldn’t say he was wrong.

Because he wasn’t.

She looked around again and saw it. Clearly now. The stiff shoulders. The averted gazes. A few people subtly stepping farther away—not out of fear, but out of discomfort. Like his presence distorted the air just by being there.

Lux didn’t make it up.

He never had.

Selena exhaled quietly.

Not in disappointment. Not in pity.

Just resignation.

Because she couldn’t blame him.

And she couldn’t blame them either.

This realm was built on order. On purity. On clean lines and radiant intentions.

Lux was none of those things.

He was chaos wrapped in silk. A sin-flavored espresso shot in a room full of holy water and tea.

And yet—she reached out.

Gently.

Took his hand.

"Come with me," she said. Voice soft. Firm.

Lux looked at her hand. Then at her. Then back at their fingers.

"...Is this a trap?" he asked.

She rolled her eyes. "Before you go, I want to check you up. And maybe talk."

He raised an eyebrow, starting to walk beside her. "Talk? Like... business talk? Deep talk? Something dangerously close to a heart-to-heart? Because I left my emotional disclosure form in Hell."

She smiled faintly. "About the attack."

He blinked. "Ah. That."
