Chapter 656 – Too Obvious

The music drifted like silk across crystal, low jazz with enough bass to feel expensive. The chandeliers overhead shifted hue depending on mood and magic proximity, and tonight they glowed a seductive gold, warm, welcoming, laced with danger. The floor beneath his feet glimmered faintly, enchanted stone carved from one of the upper realm’s rare quarries, veined with flecks of silver stardust that made every step look like a slow walk through stars.

Vincent adjusted his jacket sleeve. Velvet, dark, tailored to perfection. A hint of black-gold embroidery trailed his cuffs. He felt hot. Not just because the room was full of people, but because the adrenaline had started kicking in.

This was it.

Standing party. Waiters moved like ghosts through the crowd, carrying towers of chocolate-dusted strawberries, shots of elven tequila, and champagne that practically glowed from within.

He looked around, scanning the crowd like a hunter tracing scent. Not too fast. Not eager. Calm. Luxurious. He even paused to pick up a flute of champagne from a passing tray, his fingers curling around the glass like it was made just for him.

And then...

There.

Across the room.

Just behind the shimmering ice sculpture of a hydra wrapped in roses.

Her.

Mira Xianlong.

Dragon heiress. Daughter of the East’s financial dynasty. And still so effortlessly cool she didn’t even need to wear red to look dangerous.

She wore pale blue tonight. Soft satin that clung and flowed, wrapped high at the neck and slitted low at the thigh. She looked like winter royalty. Calm. Cold. Controlled. Even her earrings sparkled like ice forged in fire. Her hair was tied in a loose knot behind her head, strands falling along the curve of her cheek like snowflakes that got lost on the way down.

She wasn’t alone.

Two bodyguards stood nearby, one with a subtle in-ear comm, the other watching every movement.

Vincent felt his pulse thrum once.

Rage.

’Curse her.’

All these years, and he still remembered that moment. That humiliation. That smile she gave him like he wasn’t even a threat. Like he was a child playing at adult games.

Tonight, she was going to pay for that.

He exhaled. One calming breath. Then another. Shifted his shoulders, straightened his collar, and stepped sideways. Not toward her directly. No. That would be too obvious.

Instead, he drifted.

Moved to her side of the room in a casual arc, like he was simply glancing around. Let the champagne glass dangle lazily from his hand. Stopped once to admire a painting on the far wall. Turned his body just enough that she’d notice him.

He could feel it.

That moment her eyes found him.

He didn’t even need to look. It was a prickle in the air. The heat of recognition. A tension like a fishing line pulled taut.

He turned, slow and deliberate, and caught her gaze.

She frowned.

He smiled and raised his glass, just a flick of his wrist, like he was deciding that she was the most interesting thing in the entire room.

Mira didn’t move.

But inside her head, her thoughts were already shifting.

She knew it the moment her eyes landed on him. Oh, the resemblance was decent. The swagger was even passable. But that wasn’t Lux Vaelthorn.

He walked like someone who practiced confidence, not someone who was confidence. And worse? His aura was flat.

Lux wasn’t human. Not that the world knew.

But Mira? She knew. She’d felt it. Slept beside it. Let it wrap around her like heat and danger.

This man was missing it. Entirely.

And yet... he looked familiar.

She tilted her head slightly. Searched her memory. Had she met him before? The face tickled something in her brain, but not enough to anchor a name.

Which meant, by Mira’s standards, he wasn’t important.

Still.

He dressed like Lux. Walked like Lux.

That made him a problem.

She turned to her nearest bodyguard and whispered, "Invite him over."

The man blinked. "Are you sure?"

She didn’t repeat herself.

Vincent saw the guard moving before he reached him. Good. It saved him the trouble.

"Miss Xianlong would like to speak with you."

Vincent turned with a smile. "I was hoping she would."

He followed, steps smooth, heartbeat steady. Inside, a storm churned, but he was too good to let it show.

When he reached her, he bowed slightly, lips tilted just enough. "Miss Mira."

She smiled politely. "Lux Vaelthorn." 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂

That smile was a blade.

He didn’t flinch. "Pleasure to be seen by you."

Mira gestured to the side, where a quieter alcove waited, away from the crowd. No walls. Still public. Still safe.

But distant enough to play.

They stepped into it together, and her guards fell back.

Mira folded her arms, her gaze cool and amused. "You look... dressed up tonight."

He laughed softly. "You noticed."

"I’d have to be blind not to."

Vincent’s eyes dragged down her frame, slow and deliberate. "You look exquisite."

Mira didn’t blink. "Do I?"

"Too much?"

"Too obvious," she replied smoothly.

He smiled wider. "Would you believe me if I said I’ve always admired you?"

"I’d believe you if you said it for the first time."

He chuckled, voice warm, honey-laced. "Fair enough. Then let me say it properly now." He stepped half a pace closer. "You are stunning tonight. Every man in this room is trying to look at you without looking like they’re trying. But me?" He leaned slightly, lowering his voice. "I’ve always been honest."

Mira tilted her head. "About what?"

"You made me regret not being bolder before."

"Did I?"

Vincent smiled, gentle and coaxing. "I’ve seen power before. But you... you wear it like silk."

Mira almost rolled her eyes. Almost. But instead, she let her gaze fall half-lidded. Let him think it was working.

"You say that to every woman?"

"Only the ones who scare me."

She held his gaze. "Do I scare you?"

He smiled, eyes soft. "You ruin me."

She laughed.

Out loud.

Not a dainty chuckle. A full, breathy, disbelieving laugh that made several heads turn.

Vincent looked startled.
