Heavenly Blessed Baby: Fleeing Famine, Busy to Prosper!-Chapter 210: Stealing Corn
Qin Minglang didn’t want to trouble the Qi Family, so he said, "No problem, if it’s too cold in your room during winter, brother, you can move to my place. It’s just as warm."
"Who wants to live with you in the same room?"
Yin Cheng immediately widened his eyes, "I have so many young disciples, can’t I live with any of them instead of with an old fellow like you?"
"Brother..."
Qin Minglang was helpless.
Qi Quanjin saw the stance and knew Mr. Yin was about to start his daily routine of disliking his junior brother again, so he quickly said, "Mr. Yin is right. Let those lads look up to you in winter, and you’ll be comfortable, which is good for everyone."
"Humph!"
Yin Cheng snorted, "You’re good at talking, kid."
Qi Quanjin and Qin Minglang exchanged glances, both feeling somewhat amused yet helpless.
With the agreement of the two gentlemen, Qi Quanjin promptly went back to the main house to deliver the news.
From the next day, the family started getting busy.
Qi Dafu and a few others didn’t dig the soil; instead, they took axes to the distant forest to chop down trees for making wooden troughs.
The new place is even larger than the two-entry courtyard, so they could do more.
Selling greens in winter brings such profit that it’s really hard to give up.
That night, Yi Meng had just coaxed the children to sleep and quietly said to Qi Quanjin, "Brother Jin, could you go to the warehouse to get some watermelon seeds and an ear of corn?"
"Huh?"
Qi Quanjin had just taken off his socks and was about to put them in the water basin when he was stunned by her words, "Wife, what’s up?"
"I want to try planting some inside."
Yi Meng didn’t mention the space, but Qi Quanjin already understood.
He immediately put his shoes back on, "Alright, I’ll go now."
"Be careful, don’t startle the others at home."
Yi Meng reminded him.
Qi Quanjin acknowledged and had already left the room.
There was a moon tonight, and lanterns were lit in the yard, so it wasn’t that dark.
Qi Quanjin went straight to the warehouse, passing Qi Ercai, the old man’s, Qi Dafu’s, Qi Sangui’s, and Qi Quanyin’s rooms along the way.
Afraid of being noticed by people inside, he deliberately walked behind the front row of rooms.
The warehouse wasn’t locked, but the door was latched.
While opening the latch, he was heard by Qi Quanyin, who lived at the far east end.
"Who?"
Qi Quanyin was about to sleep when he heard a noise and jumped off the bed, rushing out without even putting on shoes.
Qi Quanjin was startled and was about to respond when he heard a sound from Qi Sangui’s room as well.
Sure enough, he had disturbed the family after all.
Qi Quanjin no longer tried to hide it and said loudly, "It’s me. I’m getting some corn to figure out with Meng Niang how to shell the kernels."
Qi Quanyin already rushed out of the house, standing barefoot at the door, looking toward the warehouse, "Fourth Brother, who are you trying to scare in the middle of the night! I thought there was a thief."
Qi Sangui also came out, "Fourth Brother, figure it out during the day tomorrow! Fourth Sister-in-law and your sister-in-law have been busy all day, they’re tired."
At this moment, Qi Dafu also opened the door.
His room is far from the warehouse, he didn’t hear clearly, but he was uneasy, so he came out.
Qi Quanjin, seeing they were all out, felt a bit guilty but still calmly said, "My wife and I couldn’t sleep. We thought we’d figure it out sooner; otherwise, it’s always a concern."
"Hey, Fourth Brother, why don’t you and Fourth Sister-in-law figure out how to make a daughter instead of thinking about farming in the middle of the night? Isn’t that tiring?"
After Qi Quanyin spoke, he yawned and went back to his house.
Just after entering, his wife urged him to wash his feet.
Qi Sangui didn’t expect the fifth brother to say that and was a bit embarrassed for a moment. He said goodnight and went back to his house.
Qi Dafu also had nothing more to say and just went back to sleep.
Qi Quanjin’s face blushed deeply, but he didn’t forget his wife’s instruction. He quickly went into the warehouse, used a fire starter for light, grabbed a handful of watermelon seeds and three ears of corn, wrapped them in his clothes, and hurried back to his own room.
Yi Meng didn’t hear the noise from the east; she was tidying the bedding inside the room.
Seeing Qi Quanjin return, she quickly asked, "You didn’t startle the family, did you?"
"Eldest Brother, Third Brother, and the Fifth Brother all came out, but it’s fine. I said we were figuring out how to shell the kernels."
Qi Quanjin didn’t dare to mention the Fifth Brother’s remarks, afraid of making his wife shy.
But having a daughter or something, Qi Quanjin actually kind of wanted it.
Although there’s already a daughter in the family, having another one wouldn’t hurt.
For the Qi Family, daughters are never too many.
Though they both wished for it, they simply didn’t have the time.
After blowing out the candles, the shadows of the couple disappeared into the room.
In the space, Qi Quanjin’s rough hands moved a bit, and corn kernels began to fall off.
The couple worked together, one digging holes, the other planting and covering with soil, finally sprinkling some spring water on top, then washing hands and feet before leaving the space.
After working most of the night, the couple slept late, and the next day they got up a bit later.
Seeing the family already awake and Fourth Brother just coming out of the room, still yawning as if not well-rested, Qi Quanyin sneered gleefully.
Qi Quanjin felt the gaze, glared at him unhappily, and called, "Fifth Brother, bring out the corn basket, I’ll show you how to shell the seeds."
"Haha, alright!"
Qi Quanyin chuckled and went into the warehouse.
Qi Quanjin had shelled three ears of corn the previous night, so he had some experience; he started first, and everyone learned after watching him.
The corn ears were thoroughly dried, so there was no chance of damaging the kernels’ skin while shelling.
The task didn’t require much skill, and everyone shelled a few ears quickly.
Qi Quanyin scratched his face and asked Qi Quanjin, "Fourth Brother, how many ears did you shell last night?"
"Three..."
Qi Quanjin almost said three ears, but the words took a turn, "Not quite three ears, I ended up breaking several."
Just as he said this, Yi Meng came out of the room, holding a small sieve containing some shelled corn kernels and two cracked corn cobs.
This was half of the kernels from three ears; the other half was naturally planted in the space.
"This is what Brother Jin and I figured out last night. I see they’re all dried, so let’s grind some into powder first!"
Yi Meng suggested.
No one objected.
However, after shelling a basket of corn, not much was left; after some discussion, they decided to grind less than two pounds into powder, leaving the rest for seeds.
Yi Meng felt a bit anxious.
She wasn’t sure about the germination rate of these seeds.
But recalling the little green sprouts in the space corn, she felt relieved.
The corn in the space grows fast, so if the outside seeds weren’t enough, they could use the corn from the space as seed.
At most, they’d have to think carefully about how to dry the corn produced in the space.
