Heavenly Opposers-Chapter 354 - 353-The Gentle Flower’s Thorns
The Lin Clan estate sat halfway up Scarlet Peak’s lower slope, its walls of dark red stone warmed constantly by the mountain’s latent heat. Within those walls, carefully arranged courtyards, modest pavilions, and carefully tended gardens spoke of a family that once had greater ambitions but had long since settled into the habit of survival.
In the inner courtyard, under the shade of an old fire-pine tree, Lin Mei sat quietly, a book open on her lap.
She was dressed in a simple yet elegant white dress with faint red embroidery at the edges, her long black hair tied into a soft bun with a single crimson hairpin. Her skin was pale, almost translucent, with a faint natural warmth that made her seem like a gentle flame wrapped in silk.
Her eyes, large and seemingly innocent, were a deep, dark brown that reflected the world with a soft clarity. When she smiled, small dimples appeared at the corners of her mouth, making her look every bit the sweet, shy young lady her family believed her to be.
She turned a page, her slender fingers tracing the characters.
To anyone looking from the outside, Lin Mei was the perfect picture of a noble daughter: quiet, obedient, studious, refined.
Inside, her mind moved like a blade.
’Third Elder didn’t show up to morning court today,’ she thought calmly as her eyes scanned the text before her without really reading it. ’His son was the one who spoke up more yesterday about increasing tribute to the Burning Sky family. His wife has been making more frequent visits to the city lord’s mansion. They’re getting nervous.’
A faint breeze rustled the leaves above her. Somewhere further in the estate, the sound of clashing wooden swords drifted in from the training yard.
Her lips curved into a soft, almost absent-minded smile, the kind of expression that would make the older servants coo about how adorable she was.
’Father’s cough has worsened again,’ she continued her silent analysis. ’The physician’s prescription two days ago was altered. The dosage of fire-aspected herbs was slightly higher than necessary. Not enough to cause suspicion, but enough to strain his heart over time.’
She turned another page, eyes lowering as if engrossed in the book.
’I’ll need to replace the physician by next month. Two of the elders will object. I can use that as leverage to push them into revealing the ties they’ve been quietly building with the Hou family.’
"Mei’er."
A soft voice broke through her thoughts.
Lin Mei looked up, her expression brightening immediately with a genuine-looking smile.
"Mother."
A woman in her late thirties approached, her features bearing a clear resemblance to Lin Mei’s: the same gentle eyes, the same soft lines around the mouth. Lin Rou wore a faded but well-maintained dress, her hair pinned up in an elegant, if slightly old-fashioned, style.
She sat down beside Lin Mei, her gaze falling on the book.
"Still reading?" she asked with a hint of worry. "You should rest your eyes more. You’ve been studying so much these days."
Lin Mei shook her head lightly, brushing a loose strand of hair behind her ear in a motion that seemed almost unconsciously cute.
"I’m fine, Mother," she replied in a soft voice. "Studying calms me. And... if I am to be married into the Burning Sky family, I should not embarrass the clan, right?"
Lin Rou’s expression flickered, a complex mix of pride, worry, and guilt passing through her eyes.
"You... you won’t embarrass anyone, Mei’er," she said quietly, reaching out to straighten the collar of Lin Mei’s dress. "You’re the pride of our Lin Clan. Any man would be fortunate to have you."
Lin Mei’s eyes lowered, lashes casting a faint shadow on her cheeks. Her fingers tightened almost imperceptibly around the edge of the book.
"Is that so?" she murmured, voice barely above a whisper. "Even if that man already has other fiancées? Even if he doesn’t love me?"
Lin Rou winced slightly.
"Love..." She sighed. "Love is a luxury, Mei’er. In our world, survival comes first. The Burning Sky family is... powerful. With this marriage, our Lin Clan’s position will stabilise. Your brothers will have better prospects. Your father... will be able to rest easier."
She tried to smile, but it came out strained.
"And who knows?" she added, forcing some brightness into her tone. "Young Master Hou Jin is said to be talented and handsome. You may come to like him."
Lin Mei’s smile, on the surface, was shy and demure.
"Of course, Mother," she said softly. "I will do my best to be a good wife."
Inside, her thoughts were cold.
’Handsome? Talented? He’s a brutal, insecure boy drunk on small authority. I watched him beat a servant to death in the Burning Sky family’s outer courtyard when I visited last year. He smiled while he did it.’
Her fingers stroked the page of the book, as if soothing herself.
’He doesn’t want a wife. He wants a trophy with a bloodline that was once good and a beauty, but he doesn’t understand. His other fiancée, the daughter of Vice Master Luo, won’t tolerate anyone else by his side. They will come for me sooner or later.’
Lin Rou, oblivious to the storm beneath her daughter’s calm surface, squeezed her hand.
"Your father will speak with you tonight," she said gently. "He’s been busy dealing with the recent tensions. The Hou family has been... pressing harder lately. But don’t worry. He’ll protect you."
Lin Mei looked up again, eyes shining with a hint of moisture, perfectly timed.
"I know," she said, squeezing back. "I trust Father."
Her mother smiled, relieved, and rose.
"Rest a bit," Lin Rou said. "I’ll have Auntie Qiao bring you some of your favourite tea."
"Thank you, Mother."
Lin Mei watched her mother walk away, the soft swish of her dress fading into the sounds of the estate. When she was alone again, the slight glimmer in her eyes disappeared.
She closed the book gently, setting it aside.
Her gaze shifted, focusing on the surface of the nearby pond. The water was calm, reflecting the fire-pine branches above.
’A bloodline of fire,’ she thought, eyes tracing her own reflection. ’That’s what they think I have. That’s why the Burning Sky family wants me. That’s why Father agreed to this marriage. That’s why Mother tells herself this is for my sake.’
She smiled faintly at herself in the water—an indulgent, slightly mocking smile.
’They’re not entirely wrong. There is something in me. Something old. Something hot. It wakes up sometimes when I train, when I meditate, when my emotions swell too high. My meridians burn but don’t break. My heart races but doesn’t falter. My Qi... refuses to follow the normal patterns the clan manuals describe.’
She raised her hand, letting a small thread of Qi coil around her fingertip. To any ordinary observer, it would look like a faint red flame, nothing special in a city like Scarlet Peak.
But if someone like Azrail were to see it, he would notice the subtle duality inside it: a flame that burned not only outward but inward, eating and remaking, like a tiny star trying to be born.
’It’s not just a bloodline,’ Lin Mei thought calmly. ’It’s a physique too. Something no one here can name. Something that, if seen by the wrong eyes, would reduce this entire estate to ashes within a day.’
She flicked her finger; the flame vanished.
’So I hide. I play the gentle daughter. The shy bride-to-be. I let them pity me. I let them think I’m helpless. Let them think I need protection.’
She turned her head slightly, eyes half-lidded.
Across the courtyard, half-hidden behind a decorative rock formation, a servant boy stiffened and ducked back, thinking himself unseen.
Lin Mei’s smile deepened, the dimples appearing again.
’That boy is Third Elder’s spy,’ she noted idly. ’He’s been reporting my every expression for the past month. Tomorrow, I’ll ask Auntie Qiao to move him to the outer kitchens. The day after, I’ll arrange for the kitchen manager to be transferred to the city lord’s mansion. Within a week, he’ll be too busy scrubbing pots to listen at my windows.’
Her eyes shifted upward, to the direction of the Burning Sky family compound higher on the mountain.
’Hou Jin’s people are sloppier,’ she thought with a hint of disdain. ’They think sending arrogant outer disciples near the estate gates, whispering about my dowry loud enough for the guards to hear, is subtle pressure. It’s not even amusing.’
She reached for the book again, opening it, but she wasn’t reading. Her mind was tracing possibilities, branches of outcomes.
’They’ll try something soon,’ she reasoned. ’Either a public humiliation to lower my perceived value and force better terms, or a private "accident" to remove me while keeping the engagement as a political hostage. Vice Master Luo’s daughter, Luo Ying, is too proud to share her future husband. She’ll strike from the shadows.’
Lin Mei’s fingers tightened almost imperceptibly.
Her eyes, for a brief moment, lost their softness. A razor-thin line of cold determination flashed through them.
’Let them come,’ she thought. ’If they try to humiliate me, I’ll let them... once. I’ll remember every face that laughs. And when I rise, I’ll peel their pride off piece by piece.’
The faintest ripple disturbed the pond’s surface as a stray gust of mountain wind passed.
’If they try to kill me...’
Her lips curved into a smile that, if anyone else had seen, would have made their skin crawl.
’Then I’ll kill them first.’
"Mei’er!"
A cheerful voice called from the walkway.
Lin Mei blinked, the sharpness in her gaze vanishing so smoothly it was like it had never been there. She looked up with a genuinely bright expression.
A girl about her age ran toward her, dressed in a simpler version of a noble girl’s clothes. She had a round face, bright eyes, and a slightly clumsy manner of movement that made her seem harmless and endearing.
"Xiao Yuan," Lin Mei greeted warmly. "You’re back."
Xiao Yuan, the daughter of one of the Lin Clan’s minor branches and Lin Mei’s nominal companion since childhood, plopped down beside her with very little grace.
"You won’t believe what I heard in the city!" she burst out. "They say someone from the Ai family arrived just now! And not just anyone! Some say it’s that genius boy, you know, the one who made a mess in the capital! They say he turned a Heaven Core expert into a porcupine with his own shadow!"
She waved her hands dramatically.
Lin Mei’s eyebrows lifted, her expression the perfect mixture of curiosity and innocent awe.
"Is that so?" she asked softly. "The Ai family... from Ailin City?"
"Yes! Yes!" Xiao Yuan nodded vigorously. "There are all sorts of rumours! Some say he’s a demon in human skin. Others say he’s a fallen god. Some of the Burning Sky family disciples were talking about him at the market. They looked scared, Mei’er. Really scared."
She leaned closer, lowering her voice conspiratorially.
"They even said the Emperor himself had to swallow his temper in front of him!"
Lin Mei’s fingers stilled on the page.
Azrail.
The name tickled something at the edge of her awareness, a faint echo of stories whispered among the servants, of rumour scrolls that passed from hand to hand among bored noble ladies. A young man whose rise had been too fast, too sharp, too... wrong.
Her eyes turned thoughtful for a fraction of a second before she masked it with a shy smile.
"That sounds exaggerated," she said gently. "Rumours grow with every telling."
"Maybe," Xiao Yuan huffed. "But it’s more exciting than listening to the elders argue about tribute again! Oh, oh! And apparently he’s very handsome too! A girl at the market said just looking at him made her knees weak. But then another one said she had nightmares about his eyes for three nights!"
Xiao Yuan shuddered dramatically.
Lin Mei laughed softly, the sound clear and pleasant.
"Maybe he’s both," she teased. "Beautiful and terrifying. That would certainly match the rumours."
Inside, her mind filed the information away calmly.
’The fallen Yun family’s Azrail... in Scarlet Peak City... now. Timing, coincidence, or something else?’
She closed the book.
"Come," she said, standing gracefully. "Let’s go to the front courtyard. Father will be meeting some guests from the city lord’s mansion soon. We might overhear something interesting."
Xiao Yuan brightened. "Really? You’re the best, Mei’er!"
Lin Mei smiled, taking her friend’s arm.
As they walked out of the courtyard, she glanced once more toward the crimson mountain and the city below, her eyes briefly catching a flicker of something dark moving through the streets far away. 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎
She couldn’t see him. She couldn’t know.
But for a brief, inexplicable moment, Lin Mei felt as though someone had just turned the first page of a new Chapter in her life.
And somewhere in the city, Azrail smiled faintly without knowing why.
