Chapter 356: Returning to Norvonna

<.Norvonna, the international airport.>

The glass doors of the arrival hall slid open with a soft hiss as a crowd walked through them, Ruediger was one of them. At over one in the afternoon, the sunlight cast long shadows from the glass dome of the terminal.

The buzz of travelers surrounded Ruediger. He saw families and friends reuniting, travel agents and chauffeurs holding placards and airport staff briskly maneuvering luggage carts.

The last time Ruediger was here was around the previous Christmas. He often celebrated the day with the Walters, Felicia’s maiden family.

Even on the years he skipped Christmas because he traveled elsewhere, he would still come during New Year.

"Mr. Ruediger, welcome back."

Two bodyguards in dark coats and suits came forward, slightly bowing at Ruediger. One of them took the suitcase from the young man.

Ruediger smiled faintly, recognizing them as bodyguards who worked under his aunt. Throughout the years he lived in Norvonna, he had been acquainted himself with them.

"Caleb and Gael, how have you been?"

Ruediger extended a hand, to which the man named Gael accepted it first. Then, he shook hands with Caleb, the one who took the suitcase.

"We’re fine. Same old, same old," Gael answered casually, his rugged features softened as he smiled, "Getting older and hopefully wiser."

"We heard from Mrs. Walters that you’ve gotten married," Caleb raised his brows, also dropping the formal stance, "I thought I could finally meet your wife, Mr. Rudy."

Ruediger chuckled when Caleb brought up Lariette. He knew the older man might hear it from his aunt.

"She’s busy with work. I plan to bring her here during winter break later. I’ll introduce her to you soon."

Caleb and Gael nodded in unison, already pleased with the notion. Then, the latter gestured in a direction while saying the car was already waiting for them.

Ruediger stepped forward with Caleb and Gael by his side. While adjusting the strap of the chest bag, he reached out for his phone. Smiling, he tapped her name without hesitation. frёewebηovel.cѳm

The line barely rang once when it was connected.

"Hello, Eddy."

Lariette’s voice came through, quiet but warm, laced with faint excitement. Ruediger could almost see her brows lifted and her eyes twinkled slightly as she answered.

"Lettie, dear, you’re not busy?" Ruediger asked, his voice gentler.

"No. I can spare a minute or two."

He chuckled, "Hehe, that’s generous enough for me."

Ruediger noticed Gael and Caleb glancing at him as he spoke to Lariette on the phone. Without paying the two men any attention, he continued talking to his beloved.

"I just got out of the arrival hall. I’ll head straight to Aunt Felle."

"How was the flight?" her voice echoed softly, "All was well?"

"Yeah. Two hours were quite long, but no hiccups," he grinned as he walked, one hand placed deep inside his denim pocket, "Feels strange without you, my dear."

Lariette’s voice returned, gentle but teasing, "Your trip has just started, you know? I think Aunt Felle will stuff you with food soon. Don’t forget your lunch."

"Have you eaten? It’s noon already there."

Ruediger slowed his pace when he reached the main entrance of the terminal. Gael and Caleb walked forward to the waiting luxury sedan.

"I gonna finish grading the essays first. Nora and Phoebe said they’d get me some food from the cafeteria."

Ruediger stood still by the curb now, watching Gael open the door without a word. Without climbing in yet, he exhaled a sigh.

"I’m sorry, Lettie. My ride’s here. I’ll call you again," he said, reluctance tugging at his heartstrings, "Don’t work too hard, alright?"

"I won’t, you should do that too," she paused, then came her next words, "Be careful, Eddy."

"I will," he replied, voice low and sincere, "Later."

"Bye bye."

Ruediger ended the call, but he lingered for a second as he stared at the phone screen. The home wallpaper was a photo of them during the previous harvest festival in Moonville.

She smiled so brightly, seeing it hurt him with the pain of missing her.

Caleb had sat himself on the front passenger seat next to the chauffeur, but Gael remained standing beside the car. The older man smiled at Ruediger, understanding this quiet moment mattered.

"Let’s go to my aunt."

The quicker he solved this issue, the sooner he could return home.

Ruediger slipped the phone back into the chest bag. Then he stepped into the vehicle, Gael closed the door with a soft click before rounding the car, and sitting next to the former.

After a forty-minute ride through the expressway, the car finally arrived at Felicia’s company. Staff came and went from the main entrance as the chauffeur dropped Ruediger there.

The building stood tall at fifteen floors. Despite being considerably below Alvord Corporation’s net worth, it was still a large-scale company that handled massive operations.

The departments of legal, finance, HR, logistics, marketing, international sales and others occupied the building, including two office cafeterias and leisure rooms.

"No need to follow me," Ruediger spoke before emerging from the vehicle, "You can send my suitcase to the house. I’ll return with my aunt."

"Yes, Mr. Rudy."

Without wasting time, Ruediger headed inside the company, his identity easily cleared at the front desk. Even though he rarely made his appearance here, some staff knew he was Felicia’s nephew.

"Mr. Rudy."

The gentle voice of a middle-aged woman echoed from one side as Ruediger turned from the receptionist. It was Joey, Felicia’s long-time personal assistant.

"Joey," Ruediger smiled at her, another familiar face he hadn’t met in months, "How have you been?"

"Still alive, so good, I guess," Joey joked, and then she shrugged, "Come, I’ll bring you to Ms. Felicia. She’s already waiting for you."

"Alright."

Led by Joey, Ruediger headed to the elevator. He smiled politely at the staff who recognized him. Soon, the doors slid open, revealing the hallway of the fourteenth floor.

Joey’s high heels and Ruediger’s boots rose and fell on the polished floor, echoing alongside the footsteps and chatters of the staff working there. They paused right before the door of the CEO’s office.

Knock! Knock!

"Ms. Felicia, Mr. Rudy’s here."

Joey opened the door after announcing Ruediger’s arrival. A smile curled on his lips once he saw the older lady sitting behind a huge work desk, the woman who sincerely took up the parental role when he was abandoned by his father two decades ago.

"Aunt," Ruediger called, his voice soft.

"Rudy, come in."

Felicia quickly stood up, rushing to Ruediger who walked past the door while Joey quietly left. She quickly hugged the young man as he returned the gesture.

"I’m back, Aunt."

He was back to his second home.

"You did. Welcome back."

Felicia smiled as she pulled back, staring at Ruediger. The vulnerable little boy she had taken under her wings before had turned into a reliable man with an unyielding unseen force.
