Freya was a year and a half from entering middle school. Her grandmother had started giving her some lessons on easy medical terms.
Her cousin had never been part of their lessons, so why was she seeing some of those medical terms in his book?
’’Freya?’’ Freya got startled, and almost closed the book. She looked at her grandmother heading her way with a cane from the side. ’’What are you reading, my dear?’’
Freya was somewhat relieved that the person was her grandmother and not her cousin. She wasn’t done reading the book just yet.
Her grandmother came up to her before she could reply and saw the book in her hand.
’’Good heavens! Freya, have you been reading secretly?’’ Her grandmother suddenly exclaimed in surprise. ’’You should have told me that my lessons were too simple for you.’’
Her grandmother took the book from her and placed the cane against the arm of the couch. ’’Biochemistry is too complex for your age. How did you learn these terms on your own?’’ Her grandmother’s surprise deepened by each page as she flipped the pages of the book.
’’You’re a genius, Freya!’’ Her grandmother laughed excitedly. ’’Why didn’t I realize this sooner? You have always been in the top five of your class.’’
Freya was unsure how to comprehend her grandmother’s excessive reactions. The book contained knowledge that her grandmother had not expected her to grasp for her age. However, she wasn’t the owner of such book.
It was her cousin that her grandmother had always ignored.
Should she tell her grandmother? Freya was conflicted in her heart.
’’What are you so happy about, mother?’’
’’Come son! Our Freya is a one-in-a-lifetime genius! Have you been giving lessons behind my back? You must have wanted to be careful of my feelings.’’
’’Lessons? what are you talking about mother?’’ Her father looked confused until her grandmother showed him the book. Just like her grandmother, he praised her more than the times she had showed her academic results.
Soon enough, the entire family became aware and Freya saw her cousin standing silently with his family.
The person who should be praised as a genius was not her, but him. The quiet cousin whose grades could not compare to hers. The academic results that she prided on herself were definitely worthless compared to that book.
It was the right thing to let her grandmother and parents know that the owner of the book was her cousin.
But Freya hesitated to let them know.
No...she couldn’t allow them to know of her genius cousin. If that happen, she wouldn’t be praised as the pride of the Easmond family anymore, but her cousin.
Her grandmother and her parents would definitely be disappointed in her.
Young Freya came to that decision and from there on, she started keeping a close watch on her cousin and his medical books.
She continued stealing them from his room and places he forgot them in the mansion. Even when he confronted her about the stolen books, she acted like he was the wrong person, blaming her without evidence.
