Chapter 35: Chapter 34: Matt and Ace

Zein’s Point of View

The competition ended in total chaos, I mean, I couldn’t even keep track of everything that happened. Supremo had messed up everything I had organized.

Before I knew it, he was my partner, and Matt was paired with Fritzy.

"Why are you here?! Where’s Matt?!" I asked in confusion, staring at Supremo as he adjusted his necktie in his black tuxedo.

He glanced at me in the mirror, brow furrowed, and I couldn’t help but feel embarrassed, especially since the scandal he caused earlier was still fresh in my mind.

"I switched our partners; you and Matt don’t match," he said innocently, before returning his attention to fixing his hair.

Damn! Rule manipulator!

"Why?" he asked next. "You want him?" he added.

I didn’t know what he meant, so I couldn’t answer.

"You want to see his body?!"

Damn it!

Just thinking about you already keeps me from sleeping. UGH!

"Pervert!" he snapped at me, and my jaw nearly dropped.

Me, a pervert? He’s the one who suddenly tore off his shirt, went right up in front of me, and said all sorts of things, and now I’m the pervert?!

"I’d rather have him as my partner than you."

"I admit it, you’re good with him." I froze at what he said and didn’t even realize he had already stepped close to me.

I am in a long black gown. He held my waist and pulled me closer to him. I swallowed hard as I stared at his furrowed brows and slightly parted lips. Damn! He looks so innocent!

"But you’re best with me," he whispered.

I could only shake my head as I remembered what happened earlier, laughing at the same time. I remembered again how Supremo introduced himself.

"You know my name, what’s the purpose of this?" he complained innocently to the organizer when he was already at the front, holding the microphone.

The organizer had said that we should introduce ourselves, which everyone had already done, except for the last contestant, who was still arguing.

"J-Just your name, Supremo," the organizer stammered, clearly intimidated by the way Supremo was looking at him.

Supremo then faced the crowd, who were practically craving whatever he was about to say. Some of them were left gaping, as if they couldn’t believe that the nerdy Supremo had transformed into a burning hot guy who could melt you just by staring. UGH!

"Ms. Shion!"

My mouth fell open when Supremo called my name, so despite my hesitation, I still went to the front.

What is it now, Supremo?!

"You are my secretary. Introduce my name."

I swallowed hard as he handed me the microphone.

"Ace Craige, 18 years old. The Supreme Student Government President."

I couldn’t help blushing again as I remembered the embarrassing stunt Supremo pulled. It was a contest, yet he still managed to assert his authority as Supremo.

"Ms. Face of the Year goes to... Fritzy Saldivar."

I could only close my eyes when Supremo complained yet again.

"What?! That’s a fucking mistake! Ms. Shion should be the one to win! She is so fucking damn gorgeous compared to anyone, damn it!"

Waah! Supremo, fuck you! A hundred times!

"Don’t worry, Supremo, you are Mr. Face of the Yea-"

"Nah. I’m not interested."

He walked out and kicked the trophy, causing it to shatter.

I watched the bonfire they had set up in the wide open space. The flames were so high, and all of us students were gathered around it.

The weather was cold, yet we were wrapped in the warmth of the fire.

Today was also declared Free Bloody Night, a day when killing was illegal. I was actually shocked when Supremo said that my suggestion had been approved. I mean, I really expected him not to approve of it, but, well... here we are now.

"Follow me, Ms. Shion."

Fear washed over me when I realized Supremo was already behind me. Trembling, I clung to my friends.

Damn, death is already waiting.

"We’ll come with you!" Vanessa protested, so I could only shake my head.

No. Stay here.

I was walking behind Supremo as he led the way. Every step I took felt unbearably heavy, and the longer it went on, the harder it became for me to move.

I smiled when I realized where Supremo and I were. Behind the clinic, where he said we would meet.

He turned to face me, still serious. "I’ve thought about this for a long time... Do you want to be saved?" he asked.

I couldn’t bring myself to answer because of my nerves.

"You’re willing to save others, you almost knelt before me just to save them... do it, if you want to be saved."

"No. Don’t save me. You’ll only risk your position." It felt as if something clogged my throat after I said that.

"I would risk anything, crap it. The only way for you to be saved, I’ll get you out of this hell," he said.

I kept my gaze serious as I looked at him. Why is it like this? I should be glad that I could get out of this hell, but there’s something in me that wants to stay.

"I’ll get you out of Hell University."

"No. I don’t want to," I replied bitterly, making his brows and forehead crease.

If I die, I’d rather die inside this hell. As annoying as it is to admit, I’ve grown attached to this place. This place has witnessed everything I’ve been through. I admit that I’m no longer the Zein Shion they once knew, this place changed me. I love hell, to be with demons. And I still have a mission to do: to get my friends out before I face death.

"It’s getting close, Zein. I don’t want you to get involved."

"Whatever it is you’re talking about, I’ve been involved for a long time now. I won’t run away..."

I couldn’t really understand what Supremo was saying. All I knew was that I would die in this hell, die along with not just my friends, but everyone who had become part of my life in this place. I would die fighting.

I heard his soft laugh. There was unmistakable joy in his eyes, sparkling brightly. Supremo was laughing for real.

"I like it... I like how brave you are for a girl... I like how you look me in the eyes without being intimidated... I like how you bend everything I’ve worked on my whole life... I like how you don’t react even when everything is literally a matter of life and death... I like it."

"I hate it... I hate how you manipulate everything... I hate how you stand in front of me like you’re the most tremendous person out there... I hate how you give orders in an instant... I hate it."

We laughed softly at the things we said. It felt like, out of all the time Supremo and I had been together, this was the first time we truly understood each other, because we were always on opposite sides.

"Everything is worth it when it comes to you." He held my face, sending an intense surge of energy through my entire system. With just one touch from Supremo, it felt like I was about to explode.

"If you would just send me outside of hell, I’d rather die."

"You know I can’t do that... I’ll give you another choice. Be with me... be mine... be my everything... I’ll give you my world."

Tears slid down my face, the ones I had been holding back for a while now. It was scary... unsettling... I had never felt anything like this before. I know what this feeling means.

Damn. I really hate how everything is falling... falling for this guy.

"What will happen if I choose to be with you?" I suddenly asked.

I had no idea what the price would be if I chose Supremo. I had no idea how everything would end. I was ignorant about all of this.

"What will happen doesn’t matter... I told you... you are my everything. I won’t lose anything because everything I have is already with you. Trust me."

When we returned, everyone was already in chaos. I panicked too and rushed toward where everyone was gathered.

I collapsed to the ground, my hand covering my mouth, when I saw who was sitting on the chair, lifeless, tongue hanging out, with the Black Blood Gang mark clearly visible.

"Zein, why are you only here now?!" Mia suddenly appeared at my side.

I couldn’t answer. My eyes stayed fixed on Celine’s lifeless body. The anger was burning and raging inside me, and the blazing anger had finally consumed my whole system.

"Zein, are you okay?"

Matt was startled when I locked eyes with him, glaring at him so intensely he could see the fire dancing through my pupils. I saw confusion flicker in his eyes.

"Zein, why are you looking at Matt like that?!" Dave shouted from behind me.

I grabbed Matt’s arm tightly. His mouth fell slightly open at what I did.

I dragged him away from there and took him to a deserted place. His lips remained sealed, while I felt like I was about to explode with rage.

"What do you have to do with Celine’s death?" I asked directly.

I didn’t see any reaction from Matt, not even a hint of surprise could be seen in his face.

"I didn’t do anyt-"

"Liar," I cut him off calmly. "I trusted you. Out of everyone, you were the one I valued most, but you deceived me," I added.

I saw the bitter smile on Matt’s face and the pain in his eyes, already reddening. "I never deceived you. I never abandoned you."

"Then why?! Why did you have to join the Black Blood Gang?!"

I saw shock in his eyes. Damn it!

"Everything has a reason."

"Reason? You joined the gang so you’d have allies who could save you? So you wouldn’t die, like that?"

His mouth fell slightly open, clearly shocked by what I said, and I felt like cursing myself. I was losing control again.

I couldn’t stop myself. I wanted to take back everything I’d said, but it felt like all my strength drained away when I saw tears sliding down Matt’s eyes.

Damn it. It hurts so much to see Matt crying, and it’s because of me. I had never seen him cry before, and now I was the reason.

What kind of friend am I?!

"M-Matt-"

"You are right. I did join the gang to survive, but not for myself. I joined the darkness to protect the most important person in my life."

I sank to the ground after hearing everything.

"I do not regret anything I have done, nor can I blame you if that is how you see my reason for joining. Remember this: I will never be able to reject or abandon my friends... even if it means facing death, I never will."

"Zein!"

Matt suddenly embraced me, and I couldn’t help but look up at him. He was smiling at me, but there was something unusual about it.

"I-Is something wrong, Matt?" I asked.

He shook his head before smiling again. "Close your eyes, please." I did not know why, but I closed my eyes anyway as he released me from his embrace.

I sensed that many people were around us. I could hear every movement they made, and one by one, others falling to the ground.

What is happening?

"Ahh!" I heard Matt cry out, as if he were already in pain.

"Matt! What’s happening to you?!"

"N-Nothing! Just keep your eyes closed!"

For several minutes, I was blind to what was happening, but I knew Matt was still fighting. I felt tears fall from my eyes once more.

Matt, I’m sorry.

A while later, the surroundings fell silent, so I opened my eyes. Matt appeared before me, walking slowly toward me, clutching his bleeding arm.

I couldn’t help but feel my heart sink at his condition. I jumped up when I saw Matt collapse to the ground.

"Matt!"

Someone’s Point of View

I lit the cigarette I was holding, took a drag, and exhaled into the air.

The end was drawing near.

"Leader, we’ve done what you ordered."

I merely nodded at one of my subordinates before he left the room.

I observed outside, where chaos had erupted everywhere.

"What you worked so hard for will be mine. You cannot stop me, even you, Supremo. You are no match for me. I hold your secret; I know what you are hiding. You cannot deceive me. Raze, huh?"

I crushed the cigarette beneath my foot when I saw who the unconscious men were carrying now, followed closely by a woman who looked utterly dazed.

"Zein Shion, thank you, for you have made everything much easier. You are the cause of it all... you are the weakness of the demons."

I turned my back and closed the window.

"The end is very near..."
