Chapter 18: Alliance

On April 30, the body of a student was found inside a classroom. Witnesses reported that the body resembled a human husk—an empty shell that retained the general shape and form of a human body but lacked any signs of vitality. The skin was pale gray and slightly translucent. Based on the uniform, they could tell it was a female student, but the question remained: who was she?

The body was discovered around midday, during lunch. As soon as the discovery was made, everyone was sent back to their classrooms, where they were supervised by their homeroom teachers. Shortly after, the tragic news was delivered, and we were instructed to return to our dorms under strict orders not to leave.

As I lay in my room, I received a text from an unknown number.

We need to talk right now!!!

Who are you?

It's Ava. Come to my room now?!

How did you get my number? We aren't supposed to leave our rooms.

Don't care. Come to my room now!! It's room 401.

Damn. What the hell could she want? I knew I should have dealt with her when I had the chance. Reluctantly, I changed out of my school uniform and sneaked out to her room, careful not to get caught. The fourth floor housed the girl's dorm rooms, and sneaking around there could lead to all sorts of rumors, so I decided to take the stairs as a precaution.

When I reached the fourth floor, I quickly located room 401. After ensuring the coast was clear, I approached the door and knocked. I anxiously waited for her to answer. The door swung open and I was yanked inside by my collar, almost tripping over my own feet.

"What the hell is wrong with you?!" I shouted, hastily trying to regain my balance to avoid face-planting onto the floor. Then I was greeted by the view of her room.

Ava's room was masterfully decorated, filled with plushies of all kinds. Teddy bears adorned every corner, and posters of what looked like some boy band covered the walls. In stark contrast to my own room, hers was extremely tidy and had plenty of cushy seating arrangements. It was the epitome of a girl's space. For the average teenage boy, being invited to a girl's room should have been a significant and joyous occasion, but for me, it felt anything but welcoming. If I had been invited under different circumstances, I might have appreciated it more.

Ava was still dressed in her school uniform, her expression mirroring the scorn she had when she witnessed what I did to Leto. Frankly, I was a bit shocked; I had never been treated this way in my life, not even by Lucifer.

"Was it you?"

She asked, her tone more of a statement than a question, her piercing eyes locked onto mine. Given the context of everything that had happened at school today, I knew exactly what she was referring to, but I wasn't about to make it easy for her.

"What do you mean?"

"The murder! Was it you who killed another student from our school?"

"Another student? I've never killed anyone at this school because Leto Manasseh is not dead, as the entire school can see."

"You tried to kill him, though! And you even tried to kill me when I found out."

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"Liar. Stop pretending. Just tell me the truth. I already made a binding vow with you about not telling anyone about the murder, or else I'll die."

"Binding vow? What is that? I think your love sickness for Liam is messing with your head."

Ava's face flushed red as she stared at me even more intently, seemingly on the verge of exploding with anger.

"Asshole!"

"What? You didn't want that to be in the recording?"

"W-Wha, you knew?"

"You made it too obvious that your goal was to make me confess to something I clearly didn't do," I said loudly, ensuring Ava understood that her scheme had failed. "Where's the recording device?"

Ava reached into her bra and pulled out the device she had been using to record. I took it from her and broke it in half. She didn't seem surprised by my action, just a little disappointed.

"To answer your first question, no, I wasn't the one who committed the murder."

"How can I trust you?"

"You have no choice. The school didn't even say the person was murdered; they just said a body was found."

"Well, when I think of someone dying, I think of you. I still believe it was you, and when I get proof, I'll make sure you pay."

"Stop with the act. You don't care about who died any more than I do. The only reason you're so hostile is that you think it might happen to someone you care about."

"Stop acting like you know me. You don't know how I feel."

"Well, if you do care, how about helping me find the real killer, if there even is one?"

"What?"

"It's a win-win situation: I get to clear my name from your suspicion, and you get to keep an eye on me while finding the real killer."

This arrangement would work perfectly for me because I could keep an eye on her while using her as bait to lure out the horseman without endangering myself.

"Okay, then fine, we have a deal."

"Should we shake on it? Or maybe we can do it vampire style and drink on it?"

"Just get out before I change my mind."

Per her request, I sneaked out of her dorm room, careful not to be seen.
