Chapter 21: Group

"Let's all take a seat so we can begin our discussion."

Following Ava's instruction, I plopped down on the pink cushion that lay on the floor. It gave off a pleasant flowery scent, and its texture was incredibly soft. Leto, on the other hand, didn't budge an inch and continued to eye me with suspicion. I was beginning to question my decision to come here. Here I was, face to face with the two people who hated me the most. I might have looked calm on the outside, but the reality was that I was on edge. I hated feeling cornered.

The sensation of being hated was new to me. Was this how Lucifer felt? No, it must have been a million times worse for him because everyone hated him. I might have been the only one who truly cared for him, but still...

It didn't matter now; I had Nina. A mother is all you need in this world; everyone else is just useless. As long as I had her, their hatred of me didn't matter. No one else mattered. Sooner or later, that angel would have to die. I bore no grudge against anyone; funnily enough, I didn't hate him, but he had to die, and I would be the one to kill him. His existence was like a speck of dirt on a perfectly clean fabric—an eyesore.

"Okay then, down to the meat of the matter. I think the three of us should form a group for the upcoming special exercise the school has planned." Ava started of by saying.

"I don't see the point in partnering with you two," Leto commented. "You know the history between us. I don't get why you'd even suggest this after everything you've seen. Why would you want to partner up with Sin of all people?"

"It's easier this way. I know you must be suspicious that he's the one who killed that girl," Ava explained. "This way, we can keep an eye on him and make sure he doesn't target anyone else."

Leto then looked at me as if I were no better than a piece of garbage then cracked a smile as if he had just thought of something. After a moment, he finally spoke.

"Fine, I'll join."

"Great! Then we have a group."

"Wait, I never said I would agree to this arrangement," I decided to speak up.

"What? You told me you were willing to work with me."

"This isn't a democracy. You don't get a vote," Leto interjected, his voice growing more agitated.

"Personally, I wouldn't want to spend any more time with either of you than necessary," I said, ignoring Leto's irritation.

"You forget you're the reason for all of this. If it weren't for you, she wouldn't have to go through all this trouble to form this group."

"You promised me you'd work with me, remember?" Ava pleaded.

"I said I'd work with you, not him. This is different from our previous arrangement," I replied. "So, since we're all finished, I'll take my leave." I stood up from my comfortable seat and headed for the door.

Leto moved to block my path. I tried to slip pass him, but he grabbed my arm before I could get pass. It was then that I noticed the veins in his neck. In one bite, I could end this, but he'd probably rewind time or something. Or maybe this wasn't the real Leto standing in front of me. I couldn't shake the feeling that I hadn't met the real Leto yet.

"You're not going anywhere. I told you, you don't get a vote."

"If that's what you want, then who am I to deny you?"

Leto looked shocked at my words before quickly reverting to his indifferent demeanor. I could tell I had surprised him. One thing about him is that he's always ready for a fight. From the moment he entered the room, he kept his guard up, giving me no openings to attack. He wouldn't be acting this way if he didn't see me as a threat.

"What's with you? Why the sudden change of heart?"

It might be in my best interest to keep a close eye on him. Although he seemed too weak to be a threat, I couldn't afford to be complacent. I was 100% sure that Leto didn't know what I was; he most likely thought I was some kind of demon or an intruder from another world.

The world has forgotten that Hellhounds even existed. There is little to no text about us, and before the Cosmic End, Archangel Michael made sure to destroy any information regarding our kind. We were never meant to exist—the flaw of the world—they called us. I am the last of my kind.

"I just realized I'm no match for you." I replied

"Tch. As if I buy that. One look at you, and I can tell you don't think much of me. You'll soon learn how mistaken you are."

Is that so? I'm eager to learn any lesson I can; that's the reason I'm at this school in the first place.

I pried myself free from Leto's grip and returned to my comfy seat.

"Fine," I replied once I was settled again. "I'll be happy to team up with you."

"Good," Ava said, relief washing over her that another incident hadn't occurred. "Now that that's taken care of, you two can go now."

"What? I just sat back down!"

"Leave! And stop ogling my cushion; it's disgusting."

Leto and I left Ava's dorm room, separately, of course. Right after I left a voice called out to me. I turned to see it was Liam rushing towards me.

"Can we talk for a minute?" he asked after he finally caught up.

"Sure, is it about my discussion with Ava?"

"Yes. All she told me is that she is planning on forming a group with you and Leto from class C. She refused to tell me why and that's strange. I was wondering if you would fill me in on what's going on."

"Are you and Ava close?"

"You know, I've noticed that you always follow up with a question whenever I try to ask you something," Liam said, eyeing me with suspicion. "Ava is a childhood friend. We've known each other since we were kids." He smiled warmly, looking straight into my eyes. At that moment, I felt the same strange shift in him that I had sensed before. "I care for her deeply, and I won't hesitate to get rid of anyone who would cause her harm—her father won't either."
