Chapter 140: Unwanted People

Riven felt like there were eyes on him, a prickling sensation running down his spine as he walked beside Troy. He glanced over his shoulder, but no one was there. Still, he shook off the feeling and followed Troy back into the mansion.

Troy was looking around too, but for different reasons. He hoped to find out the spies planted there. His idea was to bait Riven, but Ronan would never agree with that of course. He could only try to entrap them in other ways.

Eli lingered in the garden longer than he probably should have. His mind was swirling with thoughts, mostly about Riven and the danger he could face.

He was so distracted that he didn’t notice someone approaching from behind until a hand yanked him roughly to the side.

He stumbled, yelping, but before he could call out, a hand clamped over his mouth.

Wide-eyed, Eli struggled, his instincts kicking in, but the hold was strong. He bit down hard, sinking his teeth into flesh. The grip loosened with a sharp hiss.

"Damn it!" the man growled, pulling his hand back. Eli spun around, his ears popping out from under his cap in alarm.

"Who the hell are you?!" he demanded, backing up a few steps.

The man was disheveled, his clothes wrinkled and dusty as if he’d been traveling nonstop. His eyes were bloodshot, tired, yet filled with a wild urgency. Despite his appearance, something about him hinted at nobility—maybe the way he held himself or the faint accent in his words.

The man clutched his bitten hand to his chest and stared at Eli. "How is he?"

Eli blinked, confused. "Who?"

"Riven," the man said through gritted teeth. "I saw him with you. How is he?"

That stopped Eli cold. He frowned and glanced toward the mansion as if he could still see Riven inside.

"He’s fine," Eli said cautiously. "Who are you, though?" How did this crazy man make his way inside? The Alpha’s assistant was right, the security seemed very lax.

The man flinched at the question. For a moment, he looked like he wanted to lie, but then something in his expression cracked.

"I am... Nobody."

Eli stared at him, ears twitching as he studied the man’s face. There was pain there, deep and raw, something that could break a man.

Julius—though he didn’t introduce himself yet—felt his throat tighten. After days of searching, sleepless nights, and ignoring every warning, he finally saw Riven. Safe. Alive.

It felt like someone had unclenched a vice around his heart. But instead of relief, there was a hollow ache. He hadn’t known what he would do if he found Riven again. He only knew that when he heard about Riven’s disappearance, he couldn’t stay still.

He left his house, defied his father’s orders, and took to the roads himself. His father threatened to disown him. Julius didn’t care. Titles, legacies—none of it mattered.

He wanted to confront Ronan and vent his anger for losing him. He knew... He knew how weak Riven was, he knew that he was simply a half-wolf. He could not be safe out there all alone.

Eli lowered his guard slightly, watching the pain flicker across the man’s face. "You know him well, don’t you?" He could sense that this strange man truly didn’t mean any harm.

Julius let out a breath, not quite a laugh. "I used to. Before I ruined everything."

Eli tilted his head, cautiously sympathetic. "Why don’t you just tell me your name?"

Julius looked away. "If he didn’t tell you about me, it means he doesn’t think I’m important. I won’t force it."

Eli said quietly, "He’s not in danger. You don’t need to worry."

Julius smiled, but it didn’t reach his eyes. "He’s with the Alpha now, right?"

Eli’s brows furrowed. "Yes."

Julius nodded. That confirmed everything. Riven had been taken in, protected. Cared for.

Loved?

Ronan did not treat Riven like any other wolf. Julius knew that for some reason, Riven was special to the Alpha.

Eli stiffened. "You’ve been watching us, but for how long?" Eli made many conclusions upon seeing this man, and he did not seem to be wrong. He was a creep.

"I had to know. That he was alive. That he was... Alright."

Eli’s gaze sharpened. "Who are you to him?" He asked again.

The man didn’t answer. He just looked stricken, like that question had cut deeper than Eli intended.

"I’m someone who messed up," he said finally, voice low. "Someone who left things broken."

"Then maybe you should’ve stayed gone," Eli said coolly. "He’s been through enough."

"I know that!" the man snapped, the mask cracking.

"You should go," Eli said, his voice flat now. "Whatever guilt you’re carrying, don’t dump it on him. He’s finally safe."

He rubbed at the bite mark absently, grounding himself.

"I should go," he said quietly.

Eli didn’t stop him. But he did say, "If you really care about him, you should want him to be happy."

"I wish he were happy too... But with me instead." Julius muttered before leaving.

As soon as Riven stepped into the master bedroom, Troy closed the door behind them and turned to face him.

"To find the enemies and spies planted in this mansion," Troy began, his gaze steady, "we need to draw them out. Because Ronan’s been too patient, too kind... They think he’s weak. They think they can get away with it. For that reason, I need your help, Riven. Will you be the bait?" fɾeewebnoveℓ.co๓

Riven blinked, startled. "What?"

"I know Ronan told me not to involve you. He wants to keep you safe," Troy admitted, his jaw tightening. "But I can’t just sit and wait while these snakes slither around inside our walls. I had to ask. You can lure them out. I will protect you with my life. Do you agree?"

Riven’s surprise slowly morphed into something else—excitement. For days, he had been caged in this mansion, but now, it was time for some ACTION!

"I agree!"
