Chapter 31: He’s The One Stealing Your Girl

The next seven days were, in a word, laborious for the nine other heroes.

Just like the knight commander had promised; the duration for training became progressively longer and more demanding.

And as expected, the heroes during this time, advanced further in both their combat skills and mana manipulation where it would have taken a regular denizen months.

Ava’s chosen weapons were of course twin daggers, to go with her shadow affinity and divine skill of stealth. Her proficiency in both regards had soared, and she was beginning to blend more with her environment.

Ariana’s chosen weapon was a short sword, and her skills at manipulating Mana into fire had also advanced further than one would expect one to achieve in just seven days.

Julia, whose chosen weapon was of course a shield, has become quite proficient in its use, and can even project one conjured with purely her mana for a short duration.

Lily’s chosen weapon, even if ill advised, was the staff. She was getting quite good with the stuff, and can also now perform basic healing magic on her injured friends.

Erica’s chosen weapon was of course the bow. And she’s now a very effective combatant in both close range, using the bow as a heavy weapon, and long range, taking out target from the distance, and her rate of growth and precision with this weapon was second only to one person.

Roberto’s mastery of the spear was just as rapid. With a wind affinity that’s particularly powerful, he could thrust multiple punctures into a dummy in mere seconds. He is for sure among the top when it came to mastery.

Broddy’s chosen weapons were his skin and muscles which have become incredibly strong and durable since he awakened. His natural healing factor has also skyrocketed. His fighting style is almost martial in nature, and can deal just as much damage as the rest with just his fists.

Jacob, for long range can manipulate and shoot out concentrated lightning at his targets, and for short range, he uses a single blade.

A katana had to be custom made for Andrew since every other sword type weapon he uses would just progressively break apart from extreme pressure. His pure speed of draw is faster than Roberto who prides himself on his extreme speed. Andrew does not even have a wind affinity so the others concluded he just had ridiculous base stats.

The nature of a heroes divine skill can be gleaned from the nature of their affinity and what base abilities they display. Andrew on the other hand seems capable of cutting anything and everything with a single strike.

Not only that, his fighting technique with the katana was monstrous. In this short period of seven days, while the others have registered a single basic skill each, Andrew had registered three katana technique series, and they were all now above the adept level.

Zorat was not present for their grueling training sessions, but he was always up to date, thanks to his ’bestie’ Erica, who would after every training walk over to Zorat’s hut and give him the run down of things while they discussed lighter matters.

It also helps that Zorat’s location was also quite close to the training grounds, basically a stone throw away. But only Erica would often come and the rest of the heroes would go about doing their own thing.

Today, just like the last seven days, after their training, Erica who would usually say some words to Broddy before leaving; this time, did not say anything to him. It seems Roberto’s advice on how to fix his mess with Erica had only backfired, now she just looks at Broddy with annoyance while he sighs in defeat.

Roberto’s masterful advise was that Broddy should be more gentlemanly, kind and romantic; basically doing the opposite of all the things Erica had found attractive in him in the first place. And as one would expect, she didn’t like that; but she knew Broddy was just trying to fix things so she was just annoyed, she had no intention of actually ending things with him.

But Brodddy was very worried, and since the advice Roberto had given him earlier had failed spectacularly, he turned to his actual best friend... Jacob.

Sitting at the corner of the training center, shirtless and with light bruises all over that seem to be slowly healing to the naked eyes, Broddy turned to Jacob who was seated beside him but looking in a different direction at someone else.

"I need your help Jacob.... I think Erica is about to dump me" he said with deep sadness.

Jacob adjusted his glasses, turning to him unsurprised as he said." Why do you think that ?"

"She’s acting very different from before... and doesn’t seem to like me anymore." He responded.

Jacob was quiet for a moment as if thinking deeply about something, then he said in a serious tone." Think, Broddy.... Is there anything ’new’ that has been going on with Erica since arriving in this world ?"

"Well... we arrived in a different world, that’s new."

"Not that, something else... something ’different’ . "

"Hmm... she began hanging out with that Caleb dude.."

"There you have it. I think that’s your biggest problem right now." Jacob said in the most concerning tone.

"Caleb ?!. But he’s chill."

"No, Broddy. He’s very not chill. Can’t you see he’s the one stealing your girl.. making her change before your eyes ?"

It was like a light bulb had turned on in Broddy’s head. He suddenly began to piece together the two’s first real interaction at the banquet and how Erica was blushing, and how she always says she’s going to check up on Caleb. It all made sense now.

Broddy turned to Jacob with equal parts rage and sadness." What do I do Jacob?. It’s true. I think Caleb is trying to steal my girl." This time there was much sadness in his voice, it’s obvious he loves Erica deeply.

"Well. He doesn’t attend training, so there isn’t much we can do to him. And it’s not like we can storm his hut and warn him, that will only push Erica further.."

"But... he is already the weakest of us all; and he also has no skills or combat training...."

"...if Caleb were to say.... Happen upon an accident and couldn’t make it back during our first dungeon raid next week...." Jacob said slowly and quietly into Broddy’s ears.

"...Won’t Erica jump back into your arms then ?... Think about it, Broddy. It’s the perfect plan."

"Accident ?. What.... What type of accident ?" Broddy inquired, in both confusion and concern.

"One that he won’t be coming back from of course. Don’t you want your girl back ?" he said with deep concern.

Broddy was quiet for some time as he was starting to catch what Jacob was putting down.

His face twisted in first fear, then worry, then steeled into resolve. He’s never done a thing like this before. He’s called a bad boy, but he thinks himself the good kind of bad boy. However, he was ready to do anything if it means not losing Erica. He also wasn’t even that familiar with the guy called Caleb..."Yes. Yes, I want Erica back!" he finally responded.

"Good. We will come up with a plan, and in one week time.... Caleb will be history."
