Chapter 40: Mirror Chase Madness

The mutated thugs lunged, berserk roars echoing through the narrow alley.

Scavratt didn't flinch.

He bared his fangs and crouched low.

His claws lengthened. His limbs cracked and thickened. His eyes glowed red.

"You were mine but no more. Time to die."

One berserker swung a rusted metal bat at him with a scream.

Scavratt didn't even blink.

Rust Touch.

The bat crumbled mid-swing, eaten by corrosion in seconds.

Scavratt grabbed the thug by the throat.

He then ripped through his chest with his claws, tearing his ribcage apart.

Another berserker charged from the side with a lead pipe.

He slammed it down toward Scavratt's back.

Scavratt's tail lashed out.

CRACK!

He broke the thug's legs from beneath him.

The weapon rusted instantly on contact, crumbling into ash.

Scavratt turned and sank his claws into the second berserker's face.

CRUNCH!

Tossing the corpse into the wall like trash.

The third tried to run.

Scavratt appeared in front of him instantly, claws glowing.

SLASH.

The berserker's head flew clean off.

The alley was painted in blood.

Above, Zain stepped from another rooftop mirror, casually watching the carnage.

He whistled.

"Not bad. You're more useful than I thought."

He smirked and gave his system a silent command.

---

[Hack Initiation: Automatic Absorption]

[Target: All People Killed by Scavratt]

[Effect: Converts corpses into Hack Points upon death]

[Maintenance Cost: 100 Hack Points per Hour]

[Status: Executing...]

---

A faint shimmer flowed over the mutated corpses.

One by one, their bodies dissolved into black mist, vanishing into the air.

The system had converted them silently into hack points.

Zain watched with satisfaction, arms folded.

"Congratulations, Scavratt."

His voice was low, mocking.

"Not only are you my cook..."

He leaned forward, eyes glowing crimson.

"...you're now my server."

---

Scavratt stood in the middle of the alley, blood dripping from his claws, chest rising with every breath.

The berserkers were down—ripped apart.

But just as he turned, a voice echoed from above.

"Good job!" Zain shouted.

Scavratt looked up sharply.

Zain stood on a broken metal beam overhead.

Both his arms rested on the rail like he was watching a play.

"But still," Zain smirked.

"I think that's not enough for you."

With a flick of his wrist, he tossed something.

A small black box spiraled down, bouncing off debris and landing near Scavratt's feet.

Scavratt's eyes narrowed.

"What the hell is—"

Suddenly, more thugs rushed into the alley from behind.

"Boss! We heard the noise! We're here to—"

Scavratt's eyes widened.

"No—Get back!!" He roared.

"Don't come near—!"

"Why are you all so damn stupid?!"

Zain's smirk deepened.

"Too late."

He raised his sniper and pulled the trigger.

CRACK!

The box exploded in a violent blast of red energy.

It was a Blast Breath-infused detonation box laced with hundreds of blood-forged shards.

The explosion sent a shockwave through the alley.

Shards shot outward like a storm of needles.

They pierced the incoming thugs, shredding through muscle and armor.

Planting Zain's blood deep inside their bodies.

Within seconds, the infected started convulsing.

"Gah—my skin's burning!!"

"What is—AGHHHH!!"

They dropped to the ground, twitching and foaming as the mutation began.

More berserkers were born—right at Scavratt's feet.

Zain's voice came down again, mockingly warm.

"Good, right, Scavratt? I added extra seasoning this time."

Scavratt's eyes blazed. He didn't speak.

He charged.

With a growl that cracked the air.

His claws dug into the wall, and he sprinted up the side of the building like a beast on a rampage.

Zain watched calmly.

"You're fast," he said, smiling as Scavratt climbed.

"But I'm faster."

He stepped backward right into the mirror.

SHRRK!

Zain vanished in a shimmer of glass.

Scavratt roared from halfway up the building, slamming his claws into the bricks.

"DAMN YOU, DEMON!!!"

---

Zain emerged from a full-length mirror hanging broken on a wall inside an abandoned building two blocks away.

The cracked glass behind him shimmered before fading.

His grin was gone.

"Damn it..."

He moved to the window and glanced back toward the chaos-filled alley he'd just left.

"What do I do now?"

He grit his teeth, pacing.

"He's too strong. I can't overpower him—not yet."

Zain quickly pulled open his system display, eyes scanning the numbers.

---

[Hack Points: 8,780]

---

"Not enough," he muttered.

"Still short. I need ten thousand for another mid-tier ability..."

He clenched his fist.

"I've been cooking, mutating, grinding nonstop, and it's still not enough..."

But just as he took a step back—

BOOM!

The wall beside him exploded inward, sending shards of concrete and steel flying.

Zain spun, shielding his eyes as smoke and dust erupted into the room.

From the debris, Scavratt emerged—shoulders hunched, claws twitching, fangs bared.

Bits of ash and blood still clung to his fur, his tail lashing behind him like a whip.

"DEEEEMOOOOON!!" he roared.

Zain's eyes widened. "Shit—!"

Scavratt slammed a paw into the wall, cracking it even further.

"No more running! You're mine!"

Zain's mind raced.

No time. He's too fast now—mirror step or not, if I mistime it, I'm dead.

He turned on his heel and bolted down the hallway.

His voice echoed as he ran.

"You really want to chase me? Fine—let's see if your fat rat claws can keep up."

Scavratt snarled and charged after him, claws carving gouges into the floor.

"RUN, DEMON!" he roared.

"IT WON'T SAVE YOU!"

Zain glanced around, eyes locking onto a broken security mirror on the far wall.

He lunged for it.

"Let's see you try."

SHRRK!

Zain disappeared into the mirror just as Scavratt dove claws-first into where he stood.

The rat beast slammed into the wall, cracking the stone.

"DAMN YOU!"

Scavratt roared, tail whipping in frustration.

But Zain had already reappeared.

He stepped out of a shattered rearview mirror lodged into a fence post on the next block.

He exhaled, gripping his ribs.

"Alright... time to think."

But before he could relax to think—

CRACK!

A shadow shifted beside him.

Zain's eyes widened—but too late.

BOOM!

Scavratt appeared from the side wall, leaping through with full force and slamming a clawed fist into Zain's ribs.

"GOT YOU NOW!!" he roared.

Zain's body flew back, smashing into the wall behind him with a crack, dust and debris raining down from the impact.

Scavratt smirked, claws dragging across the concrete as he stalked forward, eyes glowing with bloodlust.

"No more running," he growled.

"No more tricks."

"You're fast," he sneered.

"But I'm the one who hunts in the dark."
