’Oh yeah, Set. Where the fuck is that football?’ Adam wondered as he finished looking over his new stats. In all, they were very good.
He already knew they would be, but seeing the math laid out in front of him only accentuated the fact. Since starting here, he had grown almost 10x stronger—an astounding rate of growth.
’But still not enough...’ Adam realized. Even the lowest Exalted in his previous life would be more than twice as powerful.
If he wanted to stop the apocalypse, he would have to get even stronger.
Looking around, he realized that was getting ahead of himself. Even after killing the thing and obtaining its sin of wrath, the surrounding black emptiness still hadn’t dispersed.
He was still trapped in here until he found a way out. Therefore, Adam walked back to the goo and placed his hand where it had stopped. It would be the best place to start, as it defined some kind of edge for the goo.
Adam’s eyes widened as his arm sank into the wall, like placing your hand on a bed. However, it stopped at his elbow, unable to be pushed any further.
Still, it was a good start. This showed that the wall was malleable, and thus it could be broken through.
Backing away from the wall for a second, Adam turned his arm into a hammer and started again. He had never been a contractor, but he watched enough movies to know how to tear down a wall. Just hit it with a hammer.
Sure enough, after a few seconds his idea worked. The previously purely black wall now had a small hole, which red light spilled out of. With a smile, Adam stuck his arm into it and began tearing at the wall.
After a few seconds, the entire section of the wall had crumbled. Adam could now fit through the opening and explore more—though he now didn’t want to.
’Hey, puny human! You think it’s safe to break down the Mother’s walls?’ Set called, clearly agitated.
A moment later the football zoomed into the room, almost knocking Adam over in the process.
Turning around with a glare, Adam said, "Watch where you’re going, idiot. And besides, who cares about that pile of goo?"
"Pile of goo?" Sure he had heard the puny human incorrectly, Set turned around and studied Adam. After looking at the Mantle for a few seconds, Set’s gaze fell right to the goo.
"You killed her? And... you survived acquiring wrath?" Set whispered, more out of fear than wonder.
The sudden note of fear surprised Adam, forcing him to reconsider this new avenue of power. It was quite a big boost in rewards, but if even the football feared it...
’Ugh. I’ll have to research this later.’ Adam concluded, knowing there were more pressing matters at hand.
Namely, getting the other survivors and escaping.
Looking at the football, Adam asked, "Anyway, how did you even get here?"
Tilting its head for a second, Set’s eyes widened as an air of arrogance flowed over him. Then he flew around in the air, saying, "When she took you 3, I hid so that I could find you later!"
’More like you hid so you’d be safe.’
"Hey, I came back for you!" Set said, clearly feeling he should be rewarded or something for doing the bare minimum.
Unmoved, Adam said, "So, again, how did you come here? Are the others nearby?"
Set nodded and then exclaimed, "Yes, but they’re dying! They’re not as strong as my subject, so they haven’t fought off their Mother yet. Even as we speak, their rage is consuming them!"
Adam nodded.
It was near impossible to fight off the Mother’s illusions, to the point that even with his indomitable resolve and ability to focus his anger, he had nearly fallen to her multiple times.
The others? He wasn’t entirely confident they could.
However, thinking on it more he decided that they needed to. If they couldn’t, he knew he wouldn’t be able to trust them.
That’s because this wasn’t a test you could prepare for. It wasn’t something you beat with strength. This was a simple, sudden test that strained your character.
If someone was unable to control their rage, they would be dangerous as an ally. Therefore, he wondered if he should step in.

Turning to Set, Adam asked, "Why the fuck did you just call me your subject?"
Casting a wild grin, Set flew out of Adam’s prison and into the Gentle Dark, saying, "Follow me, subject!"
Shaking his head as he followed him, Adam promised that he would crush the stupid Football later.
