Chapter 101: Chosen (1)

Eryx didn’t explain anything to me, demanding that I eat, bathe, and dress first. I’d slept throughout the remaining day and night, and now it was early morning. Alaric had come to check on me, and once he saw I was snuggled in bed with the Alpha Prince, he left claw marks in his wake. I was asleep the entire time, so I knew they didn’t fight.

When I asked if there was any problems with my brother, Eryx shrugged it off. By this point Kharis was off duty and returned to the Guest Pavillion. One of Alaric’s servants helped dress me and put my hair in a pretty braided bun but as soon as she left, I started freeing my hair, sighing in relief when the pins were taken out.

"If you didn’t want your hair done why did you waste such precious time you could have been interrogating me?" Eryx asked whilst sipping on khave and gesturing the cup opposite his on the table between the sofas.

"I wasn’t paying attention until I felt like she was stabbing my head." I shrugged and sat down opposite him. "She meant well."

Eryx poured me some khave, earning an arched eyebrow from me and a quiet thanks. "Do men of the North not serve their women?"

I almost spat back out the sip I’d taken. He was already speaking like we were a couple. I shifted in my seat a little and sipped again on my khave to buy myself some time. "I cannot say. I have only been surrounded by those pompous asses in court. If they do, I have not seen it."

"Hmm, it really does seem like the North has gone backwards," he ponders aloud and sips from his own cup.

I glare at him. "Get to the point, Eryx." 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂

This time, it was Eryx who arched an eyebrow. "Do people of the North not delight in conversations?"

My eyes narrowed on him. "You know what I mean."

Eryx smirked and poured himself some more khave. "How do you feel?"

"Better. Thanks to a certain someone who made me pass out. How did you do that by the way?" I still couldn’t fathom what he did. There was no headache or pain when I woke up.

"Pressure point." Eryx shrugged.

My responding comment was on the tip of my tongue, but further embarrassment halted me from saying anything more about the matter. Why did you choose to do that instead of taking advantage of my heat? It shouldn’t matter to me anyway. We were at odds with each other, and yes, there was an undeniable attraction to the man, but his personality sucked.

Okay, if I was being honest with myself, he didn’t entirely suck. But I was still allowed to be annoyed with him.

"What do you need to tell me? Whatever it is, big or small. I have a right to know," I began, pausing to take a sip, putting my etiquette lessons to good use. "You came to me, and I told you what you wanted to know. I deserve the same courtesy."

"You do," Eryx agreed, watching me warily. "I think you heard most of my discussion with Kharis already."

I nodded once, acknowledging it. "You said you could taste the magick of that high fae..." He ensnared my stare. "Either your senses are heightening like that of a wolf-"

"If I had a wolf," I interrupted quietly before he could continue. "Then you or Kharis could have also realised their powers were growing weaker."

"That is true. But you didn’t let me finish." I pursed my lips. Alright, I didn’t. I also didn’t want to hear him spout nonsense about me having a wolf. I’d already accepted my fate without one.

Eryx continued, "You either have the heightened senses of a ’Chosen’, or you might be part fae."

"Both sound ridiculous," I stated immediately. "A Chosen? Seriously? The Chosen among us are rare. I haven’t met one-"

"Alaric is one," Eryx interrupted, watching me carefully. My mouth slackened, and my eyes widened at his words. "But you already knew that."

I swallowed thickly. "If my brother was a Chosen, I would know."

"You do not need to protect him. We both know that. Do you not wonder how I know?" Eryx questioned quietly, far too nonchalant about a dangerous topic.

"How?" I played along, raising the cup to my lips again.

"Because I am also a Chosen." I froze and stared at him.

"What..." It made sense if he was. He was big even by Southerner standards. "Why would you tell me this?"

Eryx tilted his head. "You are to be my mate, my wife, my Queen."

I blinked slowly at his words. His Queen. I didn’t even think that far ahead. "You trust me that much?"

Eryx smiled softly. A rare one. "Have you not kept your brother’s secret all this time?" I didn’t respond. "Your brother who took your seat on the throne. You could have claimed it back by announcing what he was, but you didn’t. In the South... In Sun and Fury, the Chosen are accepted."

"They are accepted here..." I didn’t bother answering his treasonous words about taking the throne back from my brother.

"Are they?" He tilted his head. "What of your mother?"

My hand curled into a fist in my lap. "She was killed from the political games played here. Nothing more," I said through clenched teeth.

"I read the reports." My features hardened at his response. "A witch or a siren? Seriously? She was beheaded for ’enchanting’ the previous Alpha King, your father."

I lowered the cup, my body tense. Nobody ever spoke of my mother. I never expected to hear anything about those events, especially from the Alpha Prince of Sun and Fury. "We were talking about the Chosen," I clipped, my eyes like shards of ice as I stared back at him.

Eryx leaned forward, unflinching under my gaze. "I looked more into it. Faidon has been busy when he hasn’t been your guard." I said nothing, observing and wondering if this was another game. "I suspect your mother, Queen Ysilda, was either a Chosen or someone the court didn’t like. We concluded from our investigation that she was beheaded for pushing Alpha King Rhydderch into agreeing on terms of peace with Sun and Fury. That doesn’t sound like a Siren to me."
