Chapter 87: Unknown Beings (2)

Hakon is the first to speak, his interest piqued. "How so?"

"These are beings we know nothing about. Both the ones that attacked the village and what attacked us last night at the palace. We need to make peace with Sun and Fury because these attacks are progressively going across the kingdom... What if they are working together?"

Sigurd whistles. "That’s a big leap."

"Is it?" Ivar asks darkly, cocking his head to the side before gesturing for me to continue with my train of thought.

"One group distracts the Alpha King and his best warriors, taking him away from the palace... Then they attack the palace..."

"But why?" Sigurd asks.

"That’s the big question..." Ivar hits him and then speaks again. "It could be as simple as wanting to take over the kingdom."

"That thing was powerful last night," I say with a sigh, wondering how much destruction it could cause and why it hasn’t done so far. My eyes narrow at the table, a murmur slipping past my lips. "What if it’s not powerful for long, or it’s been biding its time..."

Everyone watched me now as I spoke my thoughts aloud. I didn’t pay them any mind. It was a process they were used to.

"We would need evidence to prove it before we lead down a route connecting the two," Rykan stated. I’d completely disregarded Alaric’s aide; he was always so quiet and mostly exasperated at my brother, seemingly overworked and with little sleep. Poor man.

"I think..." I begin, dragging in a breath, ready for the resistance my words would provoke. "We should tell Eryx about this."

The chamber goes silent, tension thick, falling over us. I’m not sure if that is better or not. Before their brains could finally figure out what I said was real, I spoke again. "From the interactions I have had with one of his men and including their Alpha Prince, it is clear they know stuff about creatures we are unaware of or... believe are just fairytales."

Alaric pinches the top of his nose, eyes closed as though he is trying to prevent a headache or provide himself with the strength to deal with me. "What... are you trying to say? I’m too tired to figure it out."

"I don’t know... These creatures... magick... stuff we have never dealt with as Weres... in our time. What if..." Goddess, I was struggling to explain myself now. I could feel the weight of their stares. Hanok, the grumpy duck, had already caught onto my thoughts, and I could tell he already disagreed or was highly against it.

The Beta was always like that. I didn’t mind, though. It never had anything to do with my inability to shift into a wolf, and more so because he likes to act as a counterargument. It worked in our favour. It made us think more clearly and more in-depth, and yes, at times, he was correct, and I was wrong.

But there was no resentment or hatred between us. He was a hard, grumpy duck, but he was never disrespectful to me. These were all the reasons why I had put up with him.

Clearing my throat, I got to the point I wanted to make. "You said the Creatures of Lore..." My gaze flicks to my brother’s. "They are normally of fairytales, we tell children. I don’t think they are just stories and these beings, these powerful beings, are returning, and they want revenge. But we know nothing about them. The Southern Weres seem to know something. They acted quickly last night."

"Revenge?" Ivar asked, crossing his ankle over his knee as he glanced at his brother. "Why would they want revenge?"

"That’s what Eryx could tell us." I ignore Hakon’s stare and look at my brother. "What do you think?"

"It means we would be telling them a weakness and why we have more reasoning to ensure the peace treaty remains in place," Rykan is the one who answers sternly and then bows his head apologetically at the Alpha King.

"He’s already got me," I say quietly, ignoring the stirring in my chest at the words. I’m still annoyed at the oaf, but he could help with this. I was sure of it.

Alaric sighs, his fingers tapping against the table. "Bring him in."

"What?!" Hakon is the first to jump up. Everyone else remains seated, however. Alaric is the Alpha King; his command is final. But his Beta can question him to a certain degree before my brother would lose his cool.

"It’s one thing to make peace with them, which I do not go against, but to allow them into here and into this discussion-"

"Hakon," Alaric clips; his voice is quiet, not the usual roaring, angry Alpha male he is. Hakon slowly sits, his gaze lowered as the walls seem to close in around us. Alaric’s spitfire temper was normal. But nobody dared say or do anything when he was quietly fuming. It was deadly.

"We can either move the meeting," I suggest, interrupting the silence and dispersing the growing tension—the only one able to under my brother’s Alpha command. "Or we cover everything in this room."

"I don’t fancy moving," Sigurd pouted with a huff after a while, and everyone’s shoulders relaxed, the tension completely emptying as everything returned to normal between the men.

Eryx and Cohnal entered the strategy room after I stepped outside to speak with his Beta. The Alpha Prince finds mine first, but I’m still annoyed with him, so I look to my brother, the man he should be looking to first.

The maps had been covered or removed from sight. I was sure the Southern Weres had already spied on this chamber last night when they also went through my brother’s study to discover any deception. Still, Eryx and his Beta looked around like they hadn’t been there before.

I give their acting skills credit.

"I didn’t anticipate such a small chamber for everyone," he muses, then faces Alaric. "What is it you wish to ask of me?"

"Tell us what you know about the Creatures of Lore."
