His Forsaken Luna-Chapter 89: Ancient Beings (2)
Silence befalls the chamber and with a chill that makes me noticeably shiver. Eryx’s hand reaches my thigh under the table and I shift only a little in my seat at his touch, and shoot a glare in his direction. Subtly, the hands in my lap smack at his.
Eryx does not yield but he starts to stroke my knee, create small circles, reminding me of a dream. Internally I shake my head. This is not the time. What is he doing?!
Its only when flames begin to lick up my thigh, warming my belly and coast along my spine I realise he is subtly warming me. A smug smile curls at his lips when our eyes meet but it drops instantly as everyone’s attention is on us, on him.
"Returning..." Cohnal scoffs, breaking the silence. "They never left. That is why we were told the stories."
"Can you please explain!" Sigurd burst out. "You’ve told us these names and very little about them. Who are these High Fae? All I’ve ever known is fairies are little sparkly bug type things that might cause some mischief in stories... Now you’re telling us those attacking our people are actually blood sucking little fucks?!"
That’s one way to call them. I huffed a short laugh then cleared my throat, masking my features. My eyes still twinkled as I looked at Sigurd.
Eryx squeezed my thigh, and I looked to him with a scowl. He raised an eyebrow. I tried to pry his fingers from my leg again but his grip was strong.
"Ugh." I turned my head away. Fine keep it there! "As Sigurd put it so... delicately... We do need to know more before we can take our next steps," I said, again not directly to Eryx but my words were for him.
"Well, they aren’t little sparkly bugs," Cohnal said dryly, looking at Sigurd.
"I know that now!" Sigurd threw his hands up.
"Stop acting like a drama queen," Ivar muttered.
While the guys were having their mini discussion of who was a drama queen, Eryx lazily looped his fingers along my thigh. When I peeked at him from the corner of my eyes, I realised he was doing it reflexively. He wasn’t even looking at me.
"Creatures of Lore aren’t only the Fae but I think we should focus on them and possibly witches-"
"Witches?!" Rykan gasped.
"Are you all going to panic anytime I mention something new? We all shift into wolves and have higher senses..." Eryx trailed off, his gaze roaming over the table.
When nobody answered, he continued. "There are fae that drink people’s blood and either a High Fae or a witch attacked the palace last night."
"It can’t be a witch. Witches use spells to create magick," Cohnal added and the Alpha Prince nodded. "Their speed was almost unmatched as well." 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺
"High Fae." They both said.
We stared at them expectantly, though I was beginning to understand more especially since I’d read that book about the Creatures of Lore. "The High Fae once ruled over the lands. They can cast magick like the one that attacked the palace last night."
"Is the magick only temporary? Used in short bouts?" I ask, looking between Eryx and Cohnal.
"No. In the stories they were always feared for their magick and cruelty. They never burned out," Cohnal answered. "But you... You shouted to us last night that it was growing weaker..."
"You came face to face with it," Hakon added.
"What?" Alaric looks to me then glares incredulously at his Beta, pissed that he didn’t tell him in the report.
Hakon doesn’t apologise. "How could you tell it’s power was draining?" He asked instead. "Did it say anything to you? Did you get a good look at it?"
I shook my head. "Their features were blurred. We didn’t really say anything. It just... took an interest because I said it was weak."
Eryx’s eyebrows shot up at that. "You told a High Fae they were weak?"
Cohnal too held the same expression. "Surprised you didn’t die on the spot."
I shrugged. "Well maybe it’s powers did weaken and that’s why I am still standing."
"But how did you know?" Eryx whispered, staring at me intently. They all were.
"I... I watched you guys. It had used its powers up a lot and then it had to focus on multiple opponents." I don’t know why but although I was surrounded by people I could trust, I didn’t want to announce there was something else odd about me. How was I the only one to sense that being was weakening? I could literally taste the magick. I’m sure that’s what it was anyway.
Until I know myself and could sort my own thoughts about it, I would keep that little secret to myself. For some reason, I sensed Eryx didn’t quite believe me. Its like his gaze was trying to peer into my soul, urge me to tell him.
"That makes sense," Hakon answers, nodding. "It did happen quickly. But you say you do not know what they looked like?" The Beta then looked to Eryx and Cohnal. "These High Fae... They all look human?"
"From what we know of in the stories, yes. They can also sprout wings," Cohnal answered when Eryx didn’t and was still staring at me intently. It was getting a little awkward and I was sure one of the men would call him up on it soon.
I blinked back at what Cohnal stated though. "Wings?" Though I said no more when I remembered a certain crow shifter. "Wait..."
Crow shifter... Weres. "Aren’t we Beast Fae?"
Everyone stiffened. "How do you know that?" Eryx asked quietly. "It is no secret."
"A book..." I swallow. "I read it in a book."
A book I definitely need to read again and give it more credit. What I said was swept under the rug. Everyone was more accepting about the term Beast Fae, indicating more than just Were shifters.
The rest of the discussion continued down the route of what happened in both attacks and what was left. By the end of it I was exhausted from reiterating details but I didn’t want to go back to my chamber just yet.
Although Eryx annoyed me, I was happy to see everyone working together to go against a threat that would certainly cause issues in both kingdoms.
