Chapter 99: Sleep with me (1)

Alaric didn’t say anything else on the matter. I’d returned to the guest room in a daze, my mind spinning. I wasn’t sure if it was from the poison or because everything seemed so messy. My brother had some memory loss?

Yet Liva, his mistress, is the one to help him. Was that suspicious, or was I leaning in the wrong direction? She’d been nothing but pleasant to be around and had been enduring Deyanira’s wrath.

Of course, my instincts were directed at Deyanira, but she was his mother. Alaric always told me to trust my instincts. That was before we knew I was without a wolf, though, so I’m not sure if they still count.

How could my brother’s memory have blanks in it? Was it poison? Or some sort of magick? Were the High Fae at work here?

The little fairytale book I read didn’t specify powers that could be the cause, but I didn’t entirely trust it either. It stated the basic magicks that High Fae had.

"Did he give you heaven for that?" Kharis whistled from the archway he leaned against between the bed and the living room, where I barely noticed the bundle of muscles seated.

I flopped down on the sofa beside Eryx and took the glass from his hand, tossing back the burning liquid, immediately coughing and holding the glass to my lips.

"It’s hell," Eryx said, watching me. "The word you mean."

"Did I mix the two up again?" Kharis asked, but his attention was also focused on me as I sighed, dumped the glass in Eryx’s hand, and rested my head against the cushion. 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂

"Indeed."

"He didn’t," I finally answer, keeping my eyes closed.

"Downing his drink says otherwise. Spill it," Kharis said, still unmoving from his position.

"There is a lot to absorb at the moment, and I don’t think my foggy mind can handle it right now," I replied honestly. "Alaric did not scold me for eavesdropping on his conversation. In fact... He said we all need some time away from Deyanira."

"Oh? That is surprising." Eryx shifted on the sofa beside me. I didn’t need to open my eyes to know he had moved closer. I felt his warmth and scent.

"What?" I asked as I felt his gaze searing into my face.

"You need rest."

"And you need to do whatever it is you’re meant to do as an envoy, Prince. But you don’t see me commenting on it."

Eryx chuckled at my snappy retort. "You owe me."

I groan but don’t deny it. "I didn’t expect you to collect so soon. What do you want?" My eyes remained closed, but I welcomed this distraction. I couldn’t do anything for my brother right now, nor anything else for that matter, and I didn’t particularly want to deal with Soren either.

Deyanira was leaving the palace, and Soren would be free of her. But that left me to deal with the bloody remains of whatever was left of our friendship that he could barely hold onto now with two silly words I never anticipated would be used.

"Well?" I opened one of my eyes to see Eryx’s annoyingly handsome face looking down at me, resting his head on his hand and elbow on the cushion, facing me.

"Sleep with me," he said softly.

My eyes snapped open, and Kharis decided then that Cohnal was ’mind-linking him’ and needed to see what the Beta wanted.

"Hold on," I snapped, reaching out and holding Kharis’s wrist as he tried to rush past us. I ignored the anger and lust clawing in me by Eryx’s words and focused on the warrior, remembering something Deyanira discussed.

"Your Highness, I don’t think Eryx would be pleased if I joined you in bed-"

Eryx shot to his feet and strode towards him. Kharis’ eyes swam with mischief and amusement, backing away. How did he know what to say to rile him up so much?

"You drugged Deyanira, didn’t you?" I voiced as Eryx caught Kharis by his leathers, one hand fisted. The pair froze, their eyes snapping to me. I sighed at their reaction—I was right.

"No," Kharis answered, seizing the moment to shake free from Eryx’s grip.

My eyebrow arched, and I shot them a knowing look.

Kharis sighed dramatically. "We wanted to test something."

"How easily you cave to a woman’s look," Eryx murmured, folding his bulging arms against his chest. I tried not to notice and remembered to be angry with him and not how my body was growing hot from his earlier words.

"Hey, you would too if you grew up with my sister." Kharis shot back, brushing off his leathers with an exaggerated huff. "You learn quickly that a single look can mean anything from ’I’m disappointed in you’ to ’I’m about to throw a boot at your head.’ Survival instincts, Eryx."

Eryx snorted, a smirk tugging at his lips. "I think she and Lia would get along."

I narrowed my eyes at the pair. Noting my stare, Kharis held his hands up in surrender. "Did you... Find what you were looking for?" I asked, pondering what exactly they were trying to test. I’d give it to them; they were all possibly just as sneaky as Faidon. How did they manage to drug Deyanira?

"Nothing happened," Eryx answered with a frown.

"Hmmm, well, she noticed it. Whatever it did, she wasn’t pleased," I note, leaning my arms on the back of the sofa as I rested my front on it, peering at them.

"Who would be if they were drugged?" Kharis mused.

"You heard her..." I trailed off, remembering Deyanira’s response. "I’m starting to wonder a lot about that woman... But now isn’t the time."

"No, it’s not." Eryx scooped me up from the sofa. "Let’s go to bed."

My eyes widened, and I started pounding my fists against Eryx’s chest. It did nothing to damage or hurt him, but it made me feel better. "Kharis! You’re meant to protect me!"

"Erm... Yeah, no. I’m not staying for this." Kharis began whistling and walking away as Eryx took me towards the bed.

"I didn’t agree to this!" I shouted even as my heart thumped wildly to the feel of Eryx against me.

"Actually, you did," Eryx whispered darkly into my ear, freezing my fists as a shiver rippled down my body.

I stared at him, my nipples growing achy as heat pooled to my core. Dammit, why was I so responsive to him? And like that, he tossed me onto the bed, slid in beside me and tugged me against him, wrapping the quilt around us. "Sleep, Idalia," he whispered.

"I thought you wanted to sleep with me?" I squeaked, feeling my cheeks heat.

Eryx chuckled. "And we are."
