His Toxic Addiction-Chapter 322: It’s Too Late.
Chapter 322: It’s Too Late.
Back inside the ward, Laura studied the couples before her. She smiled at them and unlike in the past where it would be fake, this time it was real and pure.
She was happy to be before them. It surprises her they haven’t done anything out of their character to her. Did the news about Alfred and images of Adele not get to them and haven’t Arissa told them all she knows yet? She asked in her thoughts.
Beatrice flashed her normal loving smile towards Laura and when she did, the urge to hug her so tight just like back then when they were friends in college covered Laura but the courage to bring it to reality wasn’t there. Especially not after all she made them go through.
"Thank you for coming," Beatrice appreciated, and a single tear left her eyes. She missed the old Laura so much but that doesn’t mean she didn’t still love the woman standing before her. She can’t tell what made them drift apart back in college but before she knew what was happening, her memories with her once best friend began to fade away and slowly, they returned to strangers.
When she was dying, after Stephen and her daughter, one more person hit her heart so bad. And that person was Laura, her struggles for survival kicked in a hundred times when she realized she would go, leaving Laura behind.
Whatever happened between them never changed her love for Laura. She still loved her best friend to a faulty end and always want to see her happy.
However, she wasn’t dying anymore, at least not so soon, and her friend stood before her. Hence, she rejoiced inwardly.
Laura chuckled and took the available seat before Beatrice. She took Beatrice’s hand in hers after taking the seat.
Placing soft get-well-soon kisses on the back of Beatrice’s hand without her friend not her husband complaining, she looked up at them with watery eyes.
"I’m so sorry I wasn’t here and you had to go through all you went through alone. I’m just glad I was never too late," she said.
Stephen glued his eyes on Laura for some seconds. He cleared his throat after a while and said, "If you should ask me, you’re too late. All the moment she needed you and the period you would have been close to her and stood behind her as a friend, you were never her, and also, she does not need you anymore. Her health is back to normal and if you don’t have any more thing to do than mock us in a pretentious way, I think you should take your leave," his voice wasn’t warm nor welcoming as usual. This time, his voice held cold seriousness in it and a tiny piece of irritation lingering around his words as he spoke.
Laura turned dumbfounded and in great astonishment, she stared at him, her lips slightly parted.
Beatrice gasped and turned to her husband, "Honey, don’t talk to her that way," she cautioned him softly. She turned to Laura and back to her husband, "Just like how we had our plates filled, she might have been going through something herself,"
Stephen fixed a stern gaze on Laura , his jaw clenched and he replied, "I’d only talk to her how she deserves. She was never a friend to you and she was never a friend to anyone." he faced his wife, "I tried reaching out to her when your illness began. Her husband is Alfred Lincoln and there should be no way she won’t have a way or an idea of how we should contact Dr. Collins. She got married to the world’s most powerful man with different connections and her daughter got married to the man who took over. So tell me, was I wrong to assume she could help us?" he directed this to no one but his wife.
Beatrice only took in a soft gulp of her saliva to moisturize her throat while Laura stared down at the bed lining. Her mind wasn’t at rest as she listened to Stephen speak to her the way he did for the first time in his life. In all the years she had known him, there wasn’t a day he used a voice like this on her. Does he already know about Adele?
"But here she is now," Beatrice put in words for Laura.
Stunned by Beatrice’s words, Laura raised her face and stared at her former friend in surprise. The guilt in her chest became more heavy.
She wondered how she was able to hurt an angel like Beatrice all these years. She wondered how she forgot all the promises they made to themselves. She remembered how they agreed at a young age to become each other kids Godmothers and how they promised to be each other’s bridesmaids.
Laura remembered all of it but what did she do? First, she ignored Beatrice’s wedding and lied about the reason why she wasn’t able to attend her wedding and not only that, when it was time for her and Alfred’s wedding, she made it ticket entry and asked the ticket sellers to not sell tickets to either Beatrice or Stephen. That was her way of keeping them away.
Seems Arissa wasn’t lying when she called her a beast and a monster. Arisa might not remember it now but her daughter was only six when she gave her a strong damaging title like this and since then, she haven forgotten it.
Stephan calmed down when Beatrice spoke up for the second time. His wife was still recovering and he won’t let Laura endanger her life.
He pushed closer to Beatrice and placed his hand on her chest. She gestured for him to give her water and patiently, he sat her up and presented the water before her. Helping her to drink to her satisfaction, he rubbed her back for a few seconds before helping her to lie down again on her back.
Laura watched all of this with her lips curled up into a small smile with tears at the corner of her eyes. It drew her close to tears when she imagined how that should have been her receiving such love and care from Stephen.
However, she pushed that thought to the back of her mind and forcused on how to ask to be allowed to spend even if it’s an hour with Beatrice. freewebnσvel.cѳm
She would have brought Adele up to lessen her guilt but seeing that Beatrice’s condition wasn’t so strong to receive such news, she understood why her daughter kept it away and decided to do the same.
